Tech meeting competitions

At certain tech meetings, we evaluate our beer based on BJCP style guildelines. We'll also keep track of who accurate-to-style beer.

The tech meeting schedule is as follows:

At the end of the year, we will crown a West Sound Technical Brewer of the year. A brewer placing in one of the above competitions earns three points for first place, two points for second place, and one point for third place. Places are based on evaluation scores.

Social meeting competition schedule

We run a series of friendly competitions at several of the social meetings throughout the year. All homebrew (including non-beer such as cider or mead) is eligible for the competitions, with the exception of the reinheitsgebot competition where only beer is allowed.

The competition schedule is as follows:

  • Second: Dave Csernak—Carrot cake ale
  • Third: Brad Maupin—Imperial stout with pumpkin, pecan, and maple syrup
  • HM: Oggie Ogden—Dr. Og's pick-me-up; cures what ails ya'! (Dr. Pepper beer)
March Wood-aged
  • First: Ryan Davies—Russian imperial stout aged in rye barrel
  • Second: Brad Maupin—Breakfast stout with oak
  • Third: Alan Burdick—Rye porter with blackberries and & whiskey chips
  • HM: (Tied for third; fewer first-place votes) Oggie Ogden—Oaked English porter
June Session (4% ABV and below)
November Reinheitsgebot (only allowed ingredients are barley, hops, water, and yeast!)

The top three places plus honorable mention in each competition win prizes. We welcome any donation for prizes. If you have any beer paraphernalia, unopened brewing ingredients, etc., please consider bringing it to a competition to be given away as a prize.

JANUARY IMPERIAL MEETING

The annual WSB JANUARY IMPERIAL MEETING is Saturday January 18th from 1-6pm in the meeting space of Western Red Brewing in Poulsbo. The theme is homebrews and commercial brews that are 8% abv and above. A designated driver is strongly recommended. Please bring your brews and a potluck dish to share. Don't forget your taster glass and bottled water. We will be taking donations for the use of this space. More info is in the Newsletter emailed 12/18.

DECEMBER HOLIDAY MEETING

The WSB DECEMBER HOLIDAY MEETING is Sunday December 15th from 2-6pm in the meeting space of Western Red Brewing in Poulsbo. Bring a Holiday Brew - commercial or homebrew and a potluck dish to share. Don't forget your taster glass. We will have the annual "Bring a Bottle-Take a Bottle" exchange - bring a wrapped bottle whether commercial or homebrew and don't forget to take one home with you. New this year is Rumball Rumble - bring a tray or your favorite rumball (or whatever spirit) and place it on the dessert table. We will also have the selection of new club officers. JANUARY TECH MEETING will be a judging of American Porters 20A. This style was chosen at the November Meeting and any club member who is interested in brewing up this porter is welcomed to bring the finished brew to the January Tech Meeting and have it judged by fellow club members. Steve will lead the judging. Date and to be determined. Location will be at Alan B's place.

The JANUARY IMPERIAL MEETING is Saturday January 18th from 1-6pm in the meeting space of Western Red Brewing. Bring commercial or homebrews that are 8% abv or above. Don't forget your taster glass. It is also potluck. A designated driver is strongly recommended.

OCTOBER MEETING and TECHNICAL MEETING

The WSB October Meeting will be on Saturday October 12th from 3-9pm and is hosted by Curt and Diane at their place in East Bremerton. Oktoberfest/Fall brews are the theme. Please bring your homebrews, commercial brews and a potluck dish to share. Hopefully the weather will be nice and the meeting will take place on the back patio. The first Technical Meeting of the Fall is Thursday October 17th from 6:30-8:30pm. Dave, Paul and Lou will lead the discussion on "Everything You Wanted to Know About Entering Homebrew Competitions". Dave will host the tech meeting at his place in the Lofall area. More info is in the Newsletter emailed 9/22.

SEPTEMBER MEETING

The September Meeting is Saturday September 14th from 2-6pm and is hosted by Don and Sarah at their place in Eglon. Belgian brews are the theme. Don will have on tap his Oktoberfest and will also have bottles of his quad and stout. He will also be preparing paella. Please bring homebrews, commercial brews and a potluck dish to share. Don't forget your taster glass. Hopefully the Meeting will be in the backyard - so please bring a lawnchair. More info is in the Newsletter emailed out 9/9.

AUGUST MEETING-9th Annual Garden of Eatin'

The 9th Annual Garden of Eatin'/August Meeting is Saturday August 24th from 1-11pm and is hosted by Oggie and Wendy at ClanOg Gardens. Summer brews are the theme. There will be smoked brisket and porkloin, maybe some salmon. A variety of beverages will be on several taps. Bring a potluck dish and some summer homebrews and commercial brews. A BBQ will be available to grill your own veggies and meat. Street parking is tight, so please carpool. More info is in the Newsletter emailed 8/6.

The September Meeting is Saturday September 14th and is hosted by Don and Sarah at their place in Eglon.

Session Fest Winners

Thank You to all who attended our first Session Fest. We had 13 entries. First Place with 15 points went to Alan for his Kolsch Trip'n. Second Place with 14 points went to Paul for his Honey Otter IPA. Third Place with 13 points went to Brad for his Mini-Bock. Tied for Honorable Mention with 12 points went to Oggie for his Baby Dunkel Weiss and Dan for his Kolsch. Congratulations to All!
