May 2008
Hi All,
This month's meeting is also the International Big Brew event, Saturday, May 3, 9AM+(?).
Steve and Frances Shaw are hosting the Big Brew just north of Silverdale between Silverdale Way and Clear Creek Way on Mountain View Road. Contact Us for directions.
Big Brew snuck up on me and I forgot to send out this newsletter a week ahead of time. I also haven't talked to Steve or Frances lately so the start time mentioned below is a guess. They'll let us know if anything changes and I'll get that out to you in our reminder mailing late this week.
Last year's note from Steve, with the date changed-
Big Brew on the 3rd is still a go
Regarding logistics for the 3rd, we will be brewing on the back deck and patio areas in back of the house.
What time shall we start, 9AM as before?
We have three 10x10 gazebo roofs so we can keep any rain off that might try to dampen our day.
Prost, Steve
Steve's directions from yesteryear:
Bring your equipment. Mash in starts at 9:00. There will be at least one brewer and several samples including Poor Richard's Ale and a strong dark belgian, both brewed 2/18/06. Join us for the nationwide coordinated toast at 10:00AM PST ( we will have a couple of make-up toasts for those who missed it).
Our water is from our own well and has 150 ppm total alkalinity, 90 ppm of calcium hardness, and also has some Fe (iron) at .13 ppm. There is plenty of it, if you care to use it in your brew, but if you are concerned about the Fe, suggest you bring your own brew water. I have made three recent batches with this water and use a little star san 5.2 in the mash and sparge water, I cannot detect the Fe, but they have all been darker brews with a little chocolate or black patent malt. Just want to let brewers know.
Bring your gear over and make a batch. No one will care if you struggle with your new set-up, maybe we could even help you.
I believe Steve will fire up the BBQs, so bring anything you want grilled.
Check out the official Big Brew website for details:
http://beertown.org/events/bigbrew/index.html
This year's official recipes are an ordinary bitter, in honor of Michael Jackson, and a blonde ale that can be made with whatever hops you can find or already have lying about.

There's talk of another Seattle pub/brewery in May, perhaps in conjunction with Brouwer's Cafe's sour beer fest, on Saturday, May 10. We'll keep you posted as to date, time, and itinerary.
Rum and Sherry tastings
The rum tasting mentioned in our last newsletter has been postponed tentatively until sometime in June. We'll keep you posted. Plus there's still talk of a sherry tasting.

The Match:
Schneider Aventinus Eisbock vs. Kulmbacher Eisbock

The Venue:
Über Tavern, Tuesday April 29th, starting at 4pm
The weigh-in:
8oz pours for each, ON TAP
Ringside seats: Free!
Now if you wanna drink, special prices this day only are:
$4 for the Kulmbacher Eisbock
$5 for the Aventinus Eisbock
Tale of the tape:
In the purple trunks hailing from Kelheim, Northern Bavaria since 1602,
sporting a gawdy 12% ABV, Aaaavennntiiiinusss.
In the silver diamond trunks, hailing from Kulmbach, Northern Franconia since 1846,
sporting a strapping 9.2% ABV, Kuuulmbaaaaacherrrrrr.
The Undercard:
Free gourmet cheese & sausage pairing, hosted by ringmaster Dan Frengs of Manneken-Brussel Imports (MBI).
THE FIX IS ON!
Dan and MBI are responsible for bringing us the amazing beers of such breweries as Schneider and Chimay, here in the Pacific Northwest. We are forutnate to have him help us with this event, even if his score card will be blindly lop-sided in favor of Aventinus.
EISBOCK...SOMEBODY'S BOUND TO GET KNOCKED OUT!

The new BPP is open just across Beveridge Place from their old location. You can practically spit from one to the other. Get into West Seattle soon and check it out.
Heads Up's own Katy Holcomb is now serving at Tizley's Europub in downtown Poulsbo until the new iteration of Heads Up opens its doors. Tizley's features a German influenced menu and plenty of German, Belgian, English, and American brews on tap. Their Eurodeli downstairs has a great selection of bottles, most are already available up in the pub, and all can be brought upstairs at your pleasure. If you haven't been to Tizley's yet, take the time to do so soon. And don't miss the Marina Market's bottled beer selection too. It's great to have two excellent bottled beer selections within just a few doors of each other. Both are good listeners and will order things for you, or start stocking some of your favorites.

June 7, Woodinville, WA
The Cascade Brewers Guild is inviting all WABL members to attend this year’s ExBeerience Beer Festival June 7th at the Redhook Brewery in Woodinville. The festival was started last year as the awards ceremony for the Cascade Brewers Cup, a local homebrew competition now in its 12th year. In addition to having about a dozen breweries pouring beer, there will be judging workshops for individuals wanting to learn more about properly judging beer, awards announcements and handouts throughout the day, information on Washington’s local amateur brewing organizations and Beer appreciation clubs, and a Joe’s vs. Pro’s style booth to see if you can spot the amateur’s beer vs. the pro brewers. The event will run from 1pm-6pm that Saturday and will be $10 (cash only please) at the door. The general public will get 5 tastes, and WABL and local homebrew club members will get 7. Additional tastes can be purchased inside. More information can be found at
www.cascadebrewersclub.org and groups.yahoo.com/group/cascadebrewers/, as well as info for those interested in entering the competition. Anyone looking to judge in the competition can email bradrcr@comcast.net for info.

Check out the beerocratic stupidity. Then again, if you're going to spend $10,000 on bottle caps you might want to consider this sort of thing. Now he may have to put labels/tabs over the top of the caps, if the dictators even allow that. I suppose they'd then have to test the tabs for illicit substances in their porous material. -A

Another Victory in the War on Drugs...
Posted by John Foyston, The Oregonian April 24, 2008 09:28AM
By JULIET WILLIAMS
Associated Press Writer
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Vaune Dillmann thought the wording on his bottle caps was just a clever play on the name of the Northern California town where he brews his beer - Weed.
Federal alcohol regulators thought differently. They have ordered Dillmann to stop selling beer bottles with caps that say "Try Legal Weed."
While reviewing the proposed label for Dillmann's latest beer, Lemurian Lager, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau said the message on the caps he has been using for his five current beers amounts to a drug reference.
In a letter explaining its decision, the agency, which regulates the brewing industry, said the wording could "mislead consumers about the characteristics of the alcoholic beverage."
Dillmann scoffs at the notion that his label has anything to do with smoking pot.
"I've never tried marijuana in my life," he told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "I don't advocate that. It's just our town's name."
The town of 3,000, sitting beneath Mount Shasta about 230 miles north of the state capital, takes its name from Abner Weed, a timber baron who opened a lumber mill there in 1901 and eventually was elected to the state Senate.
Dillmann, 61, started the Mount Shasta Brewing Co. in 2004. He said he has always used the town's name on his beers and named the company's first official brew Abner Weed's Pale Ale.
His bottle labels follow a long tradition of exploiting the town's name. Even city officials do it.
A sign posted on the way out of town reads, "Temporarily Out of Weed," while another says "100 Percent Pure Weed." Dillmann noted those examples in an appeal letter he sent to the alcohol bureau.
Once, Dillmann said, his wife, a former teacher, was delayed on a field trip to San Francisco as tourists clamored to pose next to the school bus, which said "Weed High."
But illegal drugs are no joke to the federal agency, which maintains meticulous rules about labeling. Drug references on alcoholic beverages were banned in 1994, agency spokesman Art Resnick said.
"We protect consumers of alcohol beverages against misleading advertising and labeling," he said.
Just for the record, guys, this is pot...
...and this is not...
He said the agency is reviewing Dillmann's appeal.
The Boulder, Colo.-based Brewers Association, which represents 1,100 craft brewers nationwide, said the Tax and Trade Bureau seems to have become more aggressive in recent years. It has gone after brewers for seemingly innocuous claims, such as descriptions that say one beer is stronger than another, said association director Paul Gatza.
"We're seeing the TTB starting to poke around at breweries' Web sites and issuing letters," he said. "Our trade association is feeling like TTB is overstretching a little bit."
Gatza said a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in the 1980s protected truthful speech on beer labels.
Meanwhile, Dillmann has placed a rush order on unmarked bottle caps so he can keep bottling while he awaits word from the federal agency on his appeal. He has enlisted the help of his congressman, Republican Rep. Wally Herger, who has asked the agency to explain why it rejected Dillmann's bottle cap labels.
The decision banning the "Try Legal Weed" caps came just after Dillmann had placed an order for 400,000 of them, at a cost of about $10,000. It took him four years to go through the first batch of bottle caps, but Dillmann said his sales have been increasing steadily.
Still, the native of Milwaukee said he wonders how some other brewers have gotten away with the names for their products, such as Hemp Ale or Dead Guy Ale. And he can't understand how his label has run afoul of federal alcohol regulators who must surely be aware of one of the most famous advertising slogans in American marketing: "This Bud's for you."
I rec'd a mailing addressed to the WSB about an interesting brew touring company.

Here's an interesting idea for beer tastings/smackdowns. Perhaps we should do something similar at a future meeting.

Subject: [Brewcrew] Beer Brawl at Concordia this weekend
The wise and beneficent Dr. Foyston asked me to elaborate on the Beer Brawl that's going on at Concordia Ale House this weekend. Here are a few more details I've gleaned, to supplement John's blog post from this AM:
As JF mentioned, it's a people's choice blind tasting, with everyone receiving a taster tray with 10 tasters. Shawn Loring of Lazy Boy Brewing chose the Washington beers, and I was asked to choose Oregon's finest. We were chosen because our IPAs won an in-house contest at Concordia, but we were not required to choose our IPAs for the Beer Brawl itself.
The five style categories in which we'll battle mano-a-mano are Pale, IPA, Stout, Belgian, and "Other", a wild-card. No brewery is represented more than once, and noone other than Scott Willis of Point Blank Distributing knows the identities of all the beers. The beers will be in a 1A/1B, 2A/2B format. You'll be asked to put a checkmark next to either A or B in each category, and the results will be tallied on a big scoreboard near the bar.
Once you're done, you'll be able to buy a pint of any of the beers as per usual, but you won't know what that beer is until Monday morning, when the participants are revealed and the winner is announced via press release. There will also be an award for "M.O.B." (Most Outstanding Beer), i.e. the beer that wins by the biggest head-to-head margin. I believe there is also a trophy involved.
Price is $10 per tray, or $20 with a cool commemorative t-shirt. The fun will begin today at 11:30am and continue throughout the weekend. It's gonna be a tight battle. Vote early and vote often!

Trent Tomlinson "Drunker Than Me"
Album: Country Is My Rock
Well, lately I been noticin' a gradual escalation,
In your inability to handle your libation.
Go zero to sixty,
When you get on the whiskey.
Well, used to be a glass of wine an' you'd be fine all evenin'.
Now I'm the one who says: "We're done," an' tells us when we're leavin'.
Well, I miss the way that it was,
Can't even catch the good bars.
'Cause I keep worryin' about who's drivin' home,
Who's got the keys, who's got the 'phone.
Who'll pay the bill, call a cab.
I don't mean to make you mad,
But I don't want that responsibility,
An' I can't be with a woman, baby, who gets drunker than me.
Well, I never thought it'd come to this when I said: "Have another."
'Cause, baby, you turned into me, an' I became my mother.
Well, here's what I'm thinkin':
You're interferin' with my drinkin'.
I think I have an answer to our present situation,
'Cause you an' me out on the town's got built in limitations.
So let me make this clear:
Hey I'm the one who's drinkin' here.
'Cause I ain't worryin' about who's drivin' home,
Who's got the keys, who's got the 'phone.
Who'll pay the bill, call a cab.
I don't mean to make you mad,
But I don't want that responsibility,
An' I can't be with a woman, baby, who gets drunker than me.
I ain't tryin' to ruin your good time.
But I damn sure ain't lettin' yours ruin mine.
You ain't gonna ruin my good time, baby.
I keep worryin' about who's drivin' home,
Who's got the keys, who's got the 'phone.
Who'll pay the bill, call a cab.
I don't mean to make you mad,
But I don't want that responsibility,
An' I can't be with a woman, baby, who gets drunker than me.
No, I can't be with a woman, baby, who gets drunker than me, yeah.
Another lyric with "drunker than me" in it:
Kickdown
by Long Beach Dub Allstars
kick me down is all i hear now adays
Break me off you can say it in a thousand ways
give me this, give me that as if you feed on greed
lyin' to kick it just to smoke up all my weed
drinkin my brew and gettin drunker than me
tell me what is it that you wantin from me
aint nothin free i had to work to get whats comin to me
open your eyes and realize that this is somethin' to see
kick down is what they talk 'bout today
your in my arena but you dont wanna play
its how you move and not what you say
when the cats away the mice will play
cause im remembering the days when i didnt have nothin
livin in the ghetto east side ill tell you something
from the life ive lived and what ive seen
nothing from nothing means nothing
so you better have somethin
if you wanna kick down from me
so lets move to the side and make this discrete
take a look at my numbers to see if they meet
up with your stylin to fill up your streets
i dont who you are but i guess you know me
stop thinking you can come up so easily
kick me down is all i hear now adays
Break me off you can say it in a thousand ways
give me this, give me that as if you feed on greed
lyin' to kick it just to smoke up all my weed
drinkin my brew and gettin drunker than me
tell me what is it that you wantin from me
aint nothin free i had to work to get whats comin to me
open your eyes and realize that this is somethin' to see
what is it that you beggin me for
ive got it all but now you cant have it
ive learned from what ive earned
and established my status as a job to manage
and to my advantage i will stand ground
shake your hand like the realest man around
and your town kickin you down for a minute
but everything your life have consequences
begining only to end it
as if it was intended
but you still have to take to the streets and represent it
for each one to step off a street and represent it
so you can sleep for each concequtive second
thats independent from each hour
i speak as if i was the only source of power
keeper of keeper thought with knowledge in my concious tower
i read the fate like characters in ficticious novels
and yet between the lines more follow
a most hollow way of life to model
for our street investin stress in a bottle
nah your better off wishin a lotto
kick me down is all i hear now adays
Break me off you can say it in a thousand ways
give me this, give me that as if you feed on greed
lyin' to kick it just to smoke up all my weed
drinkin my brew and gettin drunker than me
tell me what is it that you wantin from me
aint nothin free i had to work to get whats comin to me

Ha Ha, whats up Op aint seen you in a while chile.
