September 2008

Hi All,
This month's club meeting will be held at the Hood's home on Saturday, September 27. Contact Us for directions. Bring any homebrew you'd like to show off or have critiqued, or bring any seasonally appropriate commercial brews. No telling what season it will be on that day though. I'll try to bring some Heater Allen Bobtoberfest for everybody to taste, so maybe bring Oktoberfests, doppelbocks, or wheat beers, or lagers or anything that Mark likes. Hint, he likes all good beer so feel free to surprise us.

Mark is willing to have some folks come early to watch his system in action. You should probably check in with him first about that so it doesn't get too crowded.

Fresh hops!!!
Check our website for info on great local fresh Cascade hops. You can also try Don Wyatt or Kent Edmonds and other folks who might still have excess fresh hops.
The KCF homebrew awards ceremony was held at HCB lately and many of the awards, ribbons, and evaluation sheets handed out. If you didn't pick them up then or send a proxy try checking with HCB or OBS, whichever you used to dropoff your entries.

Results have been posted on our website as well as some critical feedback. Click for the comments in the "2008 Kitsap County Fair Homebrew Competition Results" section.

Local brewery news:
HCB has the doppelbock in the fermenters. SCB is up and brewing again and all is right with the world. There are even some possibilites for new picobreweries in the county. We'll keep you posted if anything comes of them.
Note from Ted Farmer about available(?) kegs and fermenters:
I have ten 5 gal corny kegs and four 20 gal plastic fermenters. I will sell them for $20 each or $250 for the whole bunch. Please pass this along to the West Sound Brewers.
Contact Us if you are interested and we'll hook you up with Ted.
Not about beer!
OK, this note isn't actually about beer but since CB's almost feels like a spinoff from Hood Canal Brewing I thought you'd want to know. Among other tie ins, Tami was one of Don's first employees at the new location, and Clark was and is a regular. Those great peanuts you get at HCB are from CB's Nuts. If you haven't been to their shop just east of the brewery and across the street, do so soon. They make the best peanuts and peanut butter anywhere, and their pistachios are great too. The peanut butter is freshly ground as you watch.

The Unification theory, all in one graph.

Who knew beer would be involved in the mysteries of the universe? Although Jack Handy said if you ever reached total enlightenment it would probably make beer shoot out of your nose.
Potential new brew club in Clallam/Jefferson Counties
Some folks are seriously thinking about starting a new homebrew club up north or us. If you're interested or know some folks who are check out our website for some basic info. We might have a couple representatives at this month's club meeting too.

This intriguing site about organic brewing, ingredients, and processes comes from Matt:
http://www.zeri.org/case_studies_beer.htm
Selection from Distinguished Brands International's "Street Talk" drinks newsletters:
WASHINGTON STATE – The Washington LCB has implemented a one-year trial program which will allow 30 grocery stores to test offering wine and beer tasting beginning Oct. 1.
CINCINNATI – Beer kegs are becoming a prime target for thieves, but it’s not the beer they’re after; it’s the stainless steel kegs. These can be traded in for cash; more than $35 apiece. In Cincinnati, distributors have resorted to installing GPS tracking devices because the problem has gotten so bad.
Matt found this hoppy stat:
http://www.realbeer.com/blog/?p=869
“Hop production in Oregon is estimated at 10.4 million pounds for 2008, up 9 percent from last year. Washington is estimating a 27 percent production increase and Idaho is estimating a 57 percent increase.”

6th Annual Fresh Hop Ale Festival (Saturday, October 4th)
Millenium Arts Plaza
7 S. 3rd St.
Yakima, WA
www.freshhopalefestival.com
Join in the excitement of 16 award-winning craft breweries, live music, homebrew demos, a cigar tent, plus local food and wine. Among Washington beer festivals, the festival's premise is specific and unusual. Here's the deal: to create a "fresh hop ale" brewers must get "wet" Yakima hops (which provide aroma and flavor to beer) from the vine to the vat within 24 hours to create the headlining ale. The Yakima Valley should be a priority stop for anyone interested in coming to beer's "source" -- the Valley produces almost 77% of America's hops used for brewing. Also, check out Friday night Brewers' Dinners at local restaurants, and the 2nd annual homebrew contest! Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the gate.

What can you do with 834 6-packs?
http://www.brookstonbeerbulletin.com/what-can-you-do-with-834-six-packs/
Here are the lyrics from a song found by Mike Myers. It's about homebrew, but like Chuck Berry's "Rock&Roll Music" it's referring to moonshine. Oh well, shine is just distilled unhopped beer anyways.

Northern Lights
"Homebrew Fever"
album-Take You To The sky

Homebrew fever's got a hold on me
I'm shakin' so bad I can barely see
Homebrew fever leave me alone
Done took my wife, took my hoooome!

Well I wish I'd listened to my daddy
when he told me not to mess with Satan's brew
Two best of friends I ever had
if you don't keep fleeing it'll get you too

Well ever since I lit up my still
my hair has been getting worse every day
It seems I can never get my fill
but sure wish I could hear what those poor boys play

Homebrew fever's got a hold on me
I'm shakin' so bad I can barely see
Homebrew fever leave me alone
Done took my wife, took my hoooome!

Well times gettin' harder can't find no job
see the money just ain't comin' in
too tired to run too proud to beg
sure wish I could start all over again

Last week I got a visit from the government man
he was lookin' for my old still
well I filled him full of buckshot from my shotgun
all I gotta do now is grab a jug and run

Homebrew fever's got a hold on me
I'm shakin' so bad I can barely see
Homebrew fever leave me alone
Done took my wife, took my hoooome!

And now for tons of (mostly country) songs that mention beer.

Artist: Adkins, Trace
Song: Rough & Ready
Album: Comin on Strong

(Wiseman / MacKichan / White)

Yeah
Alright boys follow me
Mostly in A
Stay with me now
Listen up this is philosophical

Mud grips - white-tip
Cigar stickin' out of my face
Earnhardt racing sticker on the window
Banged up fender
4x4 - straight pipe roar
Primer and rust all over the door
Scarred up knuckles, Mack belt buckle
White t-shirt - Ain't afraid to work
Got a "what-are-you-looking-at-pretty boy" smirk

Cold beer, hot wings
Wranglers, Skoal ring
Get just what you see
Gun rack, ball cap
Don't take no crap
Ain't a pretty boy-toy
I'll rock you steady
Rough and ready

Work boots - one blue suit
Size too small - won't wear at all
Unless somebody kicks - gets hitched
It don’t fit – and makes me itch
Up with sun - off on the run
Makin' money money - cause I wanna have fun
5 o'clock whistle - off like a missile
Got a hot date, girl named Kate
Think's I'm cool - 'cause I shoot straight
Ain't one thing about her fake
She's long and tall - and she goes great with

Cold beer, hot wings
Wranglers, Skoal ring
Get just what you see
Gun rack, ball cap
Don't take no crap
Ain't a pretty boy-toy
I'll rock you steady
Rough and ready
Rough and ready, Baby

Ahh, Here’s Johnny (Fiddle solo)
Just like that
Ah, here you go Grodo
I ain’t never heard nothin’ like that

Well you are who you are
That's all right with me
But I am who I am
That's all I can be
I like

Cold beer, hot wings
Wranglers, Skoal ring
Get just what you see
Gun rack, ball cap
Don't take no crap
Ain't a pretty boy-toy
I'll rock you steady
Rough and ready
Rough and ready
Rough and ready, Baby
ah...me and my buddies are all alike
We all say, “Hey, watch this.”
That didn’t turn out too good.
You okay?
(Laughs) What are you looking at?
Yeah that’s a real gun in that gun rack.
No I don’t have a permit for it.
Do you have a permit to ask stupid questions like that?
You can get hurt boy.
Get away from me.

Trace Adkins - Honky Tonk Badonkadonk

Turn it up some
Alright boys, this is her favorite song
You know that right
So, if we play it good and loud
She might get up and dance again
Ooh, she put her beer down
Here she comes
Here she comes
Left left left right left
Whoo

Husslers shootin' eightball
Throwin' darts at the wall
Feelin' damn near 10 ft. tall
Here she comes, Lord help us all
Ol' T.W.'s girlfriend done slapped him outta his chair
Poor ole boy, it ain't his fault
It's so hard not to stare
At that honky tonk badonkadonk
Keepin' perfect rhythm
Make ya wanna swing along
Got it goin' on
Like Donkey Kong
And whoo-wee
Shut my mouth, slap your grandma
There outta be a law
Get the Sheriff on the phone
Lord have mercy, how's she even get them britches on
That honky tonk badonkadonk
(Aww son)

Now Honey, you can't blame her
For what her mama gave her
You ain't gotta hate her
For workin' that money-maker
Band shuts down at two
But we're hangin' out till three
We hate to see her go
But love to watch her leave
With that honky tonk badonkadonk
Keepin' perfect rhythm
Make ya wanna swing along
Got it goin' on
Like Donkey Kong
And whoo-wee
Shut my mouth, slap your grandma
There outta be a law
Get the Sheriff on the phone
Lord have mercy, how's she even get them britches on
With that honky tonk badonkadonk
(Ooh, that's what I'm talkin' bout right there, honey)

We don't care bout the drinkin'
Barely listen to the band
Our hands, they start a shakin'
When she gets the urge to dance
Drivin' everybody crazy
You think you fell in love
Boys, you better keep your distance
You can look but you can't touch
That honkey tonk badonkadonk
Keepin' perfect rhythm
Make ya wanna swing along
Got it goin' on
Like Donkey Kong
And whoo-wee
Shut my mouth, slap your grandma
There outta be a law
Get the Sheriff on the phone
Lord have mercy, how's she even get them britches on
That honky tonk badonkadonk

That honky tonk badonkadonk
Yeah, that honky tonk badonkadonk

(That's it, right there boys, that's why we do what we do
It ain't for the money, it ain't for the glory, it ain't for the free whiskey
It's for the badonkadonk]

Trace Adkins - American Man

He keeps a spit cup wedged 'tween the dash and the windshield
Wore out spot where his hand lays in the wheel
Fourteen years of back and forth
Of Work and Church and honey do's

He's a hardhat hammer swiggin' won't hear him whine
Kick some butt, wrap it up, crack a beer high five
God-fearing son of pride and strength
That's excatcly what he's turned into

He'll fight tooth and nail for his family
Give the shirt off his back for a friend in need.

Chorus:
So let's all raise a glass to the guy who never asked
Any praise for a job well done
All the blood, sweat, and tears standing tall no fear
It's long overdue
Here's to the American Man

Flies the stars and stripes on a pole in the front yard
Picture of his wife and kids as a bookmark
To keep his place inside the Good Book
The words he believes and lives by

He's gonna make mistakes like anyone
But he's gonna make it right 'fore the day is done

(Repeat Chorus)

So let's all raise a glass to the guy who never asked
Any praise he just gave
All the blood sweat and tears
He stood tall no fear

(Repeat Chorus)

This songs for you
The American man
The American man

Trace Adkins
One Nightstand lyrics

Well it aint home
But itll have to do for a while
Got a fold down bed
Two windows on the parking lot
Three plates in the kitchenette
A table and chair where i can eat
A little black-and-white tv
A shower stall and a bathroom sink
And one two-drawer nightsand
Barely enough room to be a man

And on the nightstand
Sits a photograph
Of my wife and kids
Reminding me of how good it was
And right now, how bad it is
Beside it there's a coffe cup
Where i keep my wedding ring and stuff
And some nights it still keeps me up
How i got where i am
Funny how a man's life can be reduced
To one nightstand

On the fifth of last november
On a business trip in strangers
Alone for the night
She said 'hi im angie
And im from boston
Would you drink a beer with me
If i bought'em?
So i hit the hotel bar with her
Figured,what would it hurt?

Sittin' on the bed
Leanin' against the wall
With a bible and a gun
One of them was gonna save me
The only question was which one
So i got down on my shakin knees
Asked the lord forgive me please
Dropped the gun and grabbed my keys
That picture and my wedding band
Funny how a man's life can all come down
To one nightstand
One nightstand
One nightstand

Beck - Crystal Clear (Beer)

Plastic donut, can of spam
There's no kindness in this land
Better not let my good girl catch you here
She's getting all juiced up with a
bottle of plain wrap beer

Coffee clothing pasted on
Clean my gravestone when I'm gone
[ Find more Lyrics at www.mp3lyrics.org/tgW ]
And you better not let my good girl catch you here
She's got a whole pile of things you don't want to hear

Hitch my horse up to the town
Got my toenails painted brown
And you better not let my good girl catch you here
She'll cut you down and put the blame on me

Just a muscle in a bag
Throw my baby, don't let her sag
But you better not let my good girl catch you here

Beck - Beer Can

Alcohol on my hands, I got plans to ditch myself and get outside
Dancing women throwing plates, decapitating their laughing dates
Swirling chickens caught in flight, out of focus and much to bright
Coming down, shiny teeth, game show suckers trying to breathe
But I got a drug and I got the bug and I got something better than love
How you like me now? Pretty good
Going on, feeling strong

I quit my job blowing leaves, telephone bills up my sleeves
Choking like a one man dustball, freedom rock slimeball talking in code
We went down, lit up the shack, grabbed me a beer out of the sack
Everybody bent over twice, painting the walls, throwing some dice
Leaping up into the air getting juiced up beyond belief
And they were singin' like this!

Winos throwing frisbees at the sun, burnt my soul between the bun
Now I'm wounded, now I'm drunk, now I'm runnin' like a flaming pig
Oh yeah, scraping off the attitude, old man eating all my food
Don't be kind, don't be rude, just shake your boots and let it all get loose
Oh yeah, my goodness

Fluffy clouds, lovely rainbows
I'm sad, a soft and snuggly place
Fluffy clouds, I'm sad and unhappy...yppahnu dna das

Winos throwing frisbees at the sun, burnt my soul between the bun
Now I'm wounded, now I'm drunk, now I'm runnin' like a flaming pig
Oh yeah, scraping off the attitude, old man eating all my food
Don't be kind, don't be rude, just shake your boots and let it all get loose

Oh yeah, I like it like that
Oh that is cold
Somebody put a flamethrower on that
Uh-huh, oh my goodness!
Take me down to the depot
Somebody put me down on the bus
Oh yeah, I like it like that
Somebody burn me a plate of sassafrass
Oh yeah...

Beck - Let's Go Moon Some Cars

Yeeha!
let's Go Moon Some Cars
i Said Let's Go Moon Some Cars
let's Go Moon Some Cars, My Friend
let's Go Moon Some Cars

aw Man...
let's Go Steal Some Beer
i Said Let's Go Steal Some Beer
yeah, Gotta Steal Some Beer, My Friend
yeah, Let's Go Steal Some Beer

let's Go Set Something On Fire
i Said Let's Go Set Something On Fire
yeah, Let's Go Set Something On Fire, My Friend
yeah, Let's Go Set Something On Fire

let's Go Shoot Some Pigs
oh Yeah, Let's Go Shoot Some Pigs
yeah, Let's Go Shoot Some Pigs, My Friend
ah Let's Go Shoot Some Pigs.

Jewel - Jessica

He used to walk with Jessica
Down to the diner
They'd sit and talk for hours
About nothin' in particular
Just bullshit the time away
That's what she used to say
She'd wrinkle her nose
when she said it
That's how you know she meant it
Jessica
Jessica

She'd call him at nine a.m.
To see how sleep had
been treatin' him
And though they were never lovers
They were soulmates under cover
They'd drink beer and sit around
Or just sit still and
not make a sound
And he would shudder to think
Of what life would be like
Without his best
friend -slash- shrink
Jessica

Bridge:
She's an angel at his table
Forced to feel but not to see
Blinded by her absence
Haunted by her memory
If only you were able to
see the angel at your
table

He got a phone call
From her mother
He said, "Yeah, right stop kidding around."
He felt his heart fall to the ground
Since then everyday
Seems to feel like winter
Everything is colorless
As he can't see it with her
Jessica
Jessica

He could easily have been with her
Driving home in the car
It was her birthday
It's sick how things
work out that way
Now at night when he sleeps
A watch over him she keeps
She whispers in his ear
For his heart to hear
Jessica
Jessica

It's amazing how a soul can leave
Suddenly from a body
Rendering it useless
And stealing its desire to breathe
One moment here then gone
With no forwarding address
Love no longer has a house
Residence in flesh
Religion without a temple
No place to take your worship to
No God for the eyes to see
No fruit to lay at the feet
of Jessica
Jessica

If only you were able to see
The angel at your table
Then you'd understand why
You never got to say goodbye
To Jessica
There's no such word as goodbye
For Jessica
She's always standing by
Jessica

Jewel - Till We Run Out Of Road

It's leaving time again
I'm headed out
With all my friends
It's a roll of the dice
I've never thought twice
About the way
I've been spending my time
Trying my guts out
For every dime
Working in an
Office building tall
You don't know
Who's next to you at all
But being out here
The blood, the guts, the beer
Is a test
Only time will tell
It brings you close, man
Closer than hell

We're leaving
Leaving again
Can't recall
Where are we been
I guess we'll just go
Go till we're too old
Or we run out of road

The other day
I talked to Lou
He quit back in 92
Says he misses it bad
Those were the best time
He ever had
He said
"Give it hell to the end
'Cause once you quit
You can't get it back again"

We're leaving
Leaving again
Can't recall
Where are we been
I guess we'll just go
Go till we're too old
Or we run out of road

Expensive cabs
And sh*tty food
Washed down
With cancelled flights
This week endorsement holidays
You miss your boy and wife

Oh the late night drives
The calls
The dawn to strike you
Like a knife
Hey man
This is a beautiful life

We're leaving
Leaving again

We're leaving
Leaving again
Can't recall
Where are we been
I guess we'll just go
Go till we're too old
Or we run out of road

We're leaving
Leaving again
Can't recall
Where are we been
I guess we'll just go
Go till we're too old
Or we run out of road

Jewel - Little Sister

Hey little sister I heard you went to Mr. So and So, knocking on his door
again last night, said you needed it bad-
you know that ain't right
'Cause so many times you've come to me crying
trying to stop. you said it hurts so bad
But please don't let you
go back for more
My little sister is a Zombie in a body
with no soul in a role she has learned to play
in a world today where nothing else matters
but it matters, we gotta start feeding our souls
Not our addiction or afflictions of pain
to avoid the same questions we must
ask ourselves to get any answers
We gotta start feeding our souls
have been lost to the millions with lots
who feed on addiction selling pills and what's hot
I wish I could save her from all their delusions
all the confusion
of of a nation that starves for salvation
but clothing is the closest to approximation
to God and He only knows that drugs
are all we know of love
Every day we starve while we eat white bread
and beer instead of a hadshake or hug
We spill the pills and sweep them
under the rug
My little sister is a Zombie in a body
with no soul in a role she has learned to play
in a world today where nothing else matters
but it matters, we gotta start feeding our souls
Hey little sister I heard you went to Mr. So and So's
Knockin' on his door again last night
Said you needed more

Jewel - Silver Lining

My muffins are in the toaster
I got my raspberry jam
My grandfather was a sailor
That came onto this land
And he was looking for gold,
A pretty hand to hold,
Or some cards to fold.
At least, that's what I was told.

Silver lining
Silver lining, where'd you go?

Turn on my tv
They got talking heads in space
Used to be so easy
To have a little faith
I used to rely on luck
I didn't feel so stuck
Could earn an honest buck
Without lookin round, like jon kruk.

Silver lining
Silver lining, where'd you go?

I used to have hope
Now we got soap on a rope
I used to have dreams
Now we got overplayed baseball teams
We got grocery baggers, grafitti taggers,
Golf-ball shaggers, go team go.

Silver lining
Silver lining, where'd you go?

My landlord knocks upon my door
He's got that payday face
I swear to God he should be payin me
To live inside this place
It's filled with sharks and fins
Whose double chins say
Thicken your skin, child
If you want to win

Silver lining
Silver lining, where’d you go?

I fix myself some herbal tea
Cause it's healthier they say
Well, healthier ain't half as fun
I take a cold beer anyday
I used to have dysfunctional fun
In the cancerous sun
With my co-dependent hon
Eatin greasy greasy hotdogs on a buttered up bun

Silver lining
Silver lining, where'd you go?
Silver lining
Silver lining, where'd you go?

[scat solo]

Jewel - Rosey & Mick

Mick came home late last night
He drank enough beer to take the edge off a knife
And she opened the door, looking older than before

He said, "Rosey, you're too good a girl"
She let him in, he lifted up her dress
Like an apology began to kiss her breast
And he felt much relieved as the ceiling fan tapped out a broken melody

And she said, "Do you remember when we were younger and angry words were said,
Making up was always your favorite part
Well, I ain't young no more
And I'm sorry will not mend a broken heart."

He came home threw his things on the floor
She worked up the courage to say what she never had before
But the words got lost inside
He got that look in his eye as the sun went shining on

And she said, "Do you remember when we were younger and angry words were said,
Making up was always your favorite part
Well, I ain't young no more
And I'm sorry will not mend a broken heart."

Well the judge knew well Mick was a violent man
She got a few headlines, she got a slap on the hand
And there ain't no villains and there ain't no heroes
People on both sides of the tracks trying to add up a whole bunch of zeros
And time marches on until it's all gone

And she said, "Do you remember when we were younger and angry words were said,
Making up was always your favorite part
Well, I ain't young no more
And I'm sorry will not mend a broken, a broken heart."

Housewife's Revenge

A Housewife's Revenge
by Jewel (Kilcher)

Seems like that man took my heart
[Feels]
Laid it neatly out before him on the floor
Then he put on the biggest
heaviest winter boots he had
And stomped on it for three hours,
Maybe four
And I hope his Sorrells are ruined forever
Cause you know he knows how to push my every button

Get down to my last nerve

Like the other day he forgot to put his beer can
In the recycling bin
And he meant to do it on purpose I'm sure
So I might just have to tell him
Why his dog, Ralph, that ran away three years ago
Won't be coming home again
Cause you know he walks around the house
In his underwear
Whenever my girlfriends come around
And perhaps if he were good looking
I might feel a bit jealous, overzealous
But all I feel is embarrassed
Looking at him standing there
And I hope he never finds his left slipper
And my psychiatrist says I should tell him how I feel
He says, "Oh great, I gotta listen to her snivel again"
So I have these little unfulfilled fantasies
Of putting arsenic in his teacup
We'd see who'd be laughing then
If only he was the type to drink tea
Now I hear him come up the driveway
In his El Camino
With its black with a red-flame firebird on front
He keeps the keys to himself
He won't take me out to the movies
Cause of football
So I'll just hold out on something else
I'll never cook him another single Hungry Man TV dinner again
I say, "Listen man, you better treat me with some
r-e-s-p-e-c-t
Cause I gotta a whole lotta what you need
Then a whole lot besides, and then still a whole lot more"

He said, "Yeah, if you were talking about your weight
that might be true - but otherwise all you give me is
Headache and heartburn"
