Port wine tasting-
A few of us were talking at recent meetings about how porto wine is sort of in the wine world what barley wines are to the beer world. Rich, complex, and a screaming deal at dollars per flavor unit calculations. We're setting up a couple porto tastings in the near future. The first one takes place in Illahee on Saturday, Oct. 13, 6PM onwards. We've already sent out mailings to those folks who have previously indicated an interest. If you're interested and aren't on that mailing list contact Alan Moum to check for availability, time, location, etc.

Subject: WABL Anniversary Party venue change

As announced earlier WABL 2nd Anniversary Party will be held on Sunday, October 28th. Hope you have marked your calendar! However, there’s a minor change- it was originally scheduled to be held at the new Beveridge Place Pub but it turned out the construction is behind the schedule and unfortunately the new BBP won’t be ready by the anniversary party. But don’t worry, we already have a new location lined up for our special occasion- new Elliott Bay Brewhouse & Pub in Burien! It is the second pub by Elliott Bay Brewing Co. that opened earlier this year. It’s new, spacious, and has great food and, of course, beer!

WABL 2nd Anniversary Party
Sunday, October 28th
3-6pm

Elliott Bay Brewhouse & Pub
255 SW 152nd St.
Burien, WA 98166
(206) 246-4211
www.elliottbaybrewing.com

Here’s a tentative list of beers that will be on tap on 10/28:

Three Tree Imperial Porter
No Doubt Imperial Stout
Dark Star Porter (Nitro)
Demolition Ale
Hop Harvest
Trippel von Boorian
Red von Boorian
Scottish von Boorian
bar-top cask of something

Between 3-6pm is happy hour at Elliott Bay so beers are only $3.00 per pint. Plus every WABL member will get their first pint on us! And of course we’ll give away lots of prizes again! Non-WABL member guests are welcome but free pints and prize giveaways are for WABL members only. As always, please bring your WABL passport! We are working out some more details right now so look for more updates in the next newsletter which should come out later this week/early next week.

If you are planning to attend the party please send me a quick email at lisa@washingtonbeer.com and let me know how many people are in your group (non-WABL guests are welcome too). This is not an official RSVP but it will help us plan the party tremendously so your advance notice will be greatly appreciated!

We hope many of you can make it and help us celebrate WABL’s 2nd birthday!

With all the hop fests around here coming to an end, here's a link sent in by Matt about one of the most famous hop fests in the world.
http://www.poperinge.be/UK/data/hop_festival.htm

It takes place in Poperinge, Belgium, home to one of the few hop dominant beers in that country-Poperings Hommelbier. Hommel (short for humulus) means both hops and bumble bee in Flemish.

OK, I know it's too late to get to Denver now, but just wanted to remind you for future years.
Great American Beer Festival
Oct. 11-13, 2007
Denver, CO
Plan to attend this year's Great American Beer Festival. Last year there were over 40,000 people who attended this event!
The Great Pumpkin Beer Festivals
At least 13 different pumpkin beers on tap. Tapping of the great pumpkin takes place at 4PM at both dates and locations. Yes, tapping of the pumpkin, they pound a tap into a giant squash and start pouring. Elysian Tangletown will serve most of the beers in the week between these two events.
Elysian Capitol Hill, Oct. 20, 1221 Pike St.
Elysian Fields, Oct. 27, 542 First Ave. S.

Don't worry, these won't all feature cinnamon, nutmeg and other "pumpkin pie spices". They've usually had one or two of those, but others feature different flavors and texture from the pumpkin, which is commonly used in the mash for the Elysian pumpkin beers. They've had stout pumpkin brews, pumpkin weizens, and even pumpkin Belgian ales in the past. There should be a couple guest pumpkin beers as well.

A couple years back the only Washington beer pouring at the Toronado Barley Wine Festival was the Elysian Great Pumpkin. Yeah, how weird is that! But it was a real crowd pleaser.

Loads of events from our friends at the Beveridge Place Pub, which is nearing their move across the street to their brand new building.

Pub-maniacs,
HOPTOBERFEST CONTINUES!
All month long we’re featuring the best of Washington ’s IPAs, and YOU get to choose which one becomes our hop-head standard for 2008. Will Boundary Bay hang on to their title? Will last year’s runner ups, Pt. Defiance and Walking Man, make a run? What about local upstart Schooner Exact? YOU Decide!

THUR, OCT 18, 6:00PM – OAK-AGED RAT CITY IPA and CASK RED!
A couple of great brews from Pacific Rim Brewery that match up well with Hoptoberfest; Rat City IPA aged in a bourbon barrel and a dry-hopped cask of their Red Ale.

THUR, OCT 25, 7:00PM – SKAGIT BREWERS NIGHT!
The makers of Scullers IPA, Steelie Brown, and Trumpeter Stout will be on hand to talk beer and give away cool schwag – oh, and you can enjoy their great beers on tap, too!

THUR, NOV 1, 6:00PM – SECOND ANNUAL IPA CASK-O-RAMA!
We started out with the idea of celebrating the announcement of the Hoptoberfest winner by having a cask or two of IPA on hand, but couldn’t decide which ones. Not wanting to leave any Washington brewer out, we invited them all! We’ll have over 20 cask IPAs on tap starting at 6:00pm on Nov. 1st, and we’ll drink ‘em til their gone! There should be some left for a couple days afterwards.

WHAT’S NEW IN BOTTLES – WINE & BEER!
Wine Saturday! – Join us on Saturdays for great wine features at great discounts all day. Every Saturday, we’ll feature one white and one red from our wine list or from new selections we’re rotating in house. Glass pours are $1 off & bottles are $3 off regular price. During Happy Hour, enjoy double discounts on glass pours! Saturday, October 13, enjoy wines from France & Argentina : Abel Clement Côtes du Rhône Rosé & Alamos Malbec Selección 2006 (new & limited!).
On the Beer Front! – Those of you that missed the Lost Abbey tasting last week will be happy to know we’re carrying the full line of bottles, including Avant Garde, Red Barn Saison, Devotion Blonde, and Lost & Found Abbey, as well as Port Brewing’s Wipeout IPA and Old Viscosity. On the foreign front, we just received a delivery of Eisenbahn LUST from Brazil , a special occasion beer with secondary fermentation using champagne yeast.

Cheers, Gary, Terri, Jennifer, Rob , Lorraine , Dennis, Kate, and “I’ll call a sitter” Phil

Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day
November 3, 2007
Gather your beer loving friends for a brew session on the first Saturday of November.
What is Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day?

The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day is an international event to introduce people to the homebrewing hobby and establish relationships with local homebrew supply shops.

Each year on the first Saturday in November, homebrewers around the world are encouraged to invite non-brewing and brewing friends and family to celebrate Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day and brew a batch of beer together.

Before the event, participants that have Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day events register their site on this web page. These registered sites help the American Homebrewers Association track how many participants celebrated the event. TEACH A FRIEND TO HOMEBREW DAY FACTS:
2006: More than 1200 brewers taught 540 people how to brew at 51 sites, producing over 2,200 gallons of homebrew in the process. Sites were registered in 31 states, and in Canada, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Indonesia, and South Africa.
2005: 1839 homebrewers taught 583 new homebrewers how to brew at 184 sites in 36 states, 3 Canadian provinces, 3 Australian provinces, South Africa, and Guam.
2004: 1179 participants introduced 423 new homebrewers to the hobby at 137 different sites.

How to Celebrate

Before the event
• Register your Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day site
• View registered sites
• Invite friends who are not yet homebrewers to teach them to brew beer at home
• Take your new homebrew recruits to your local homebrew supply shop to buy ingredients
• Hold a special beer dinner for friends or family you’re going to teach to homebrew

During the event
• Tell friends and family about other American Homebrewers Association fun events – Big Brew, National Homebrewers Conference, Mead Day
• Hand out free copies of Zymurgy for Beginners to all your friends.
• Bring out homebrewing literature for your friends to read– Zymurgy, Zymurgy for Beginners, The Complete Joy of Homebrewing and other homebrewing books
• Drink homebrew, pair your homebrew with food and HAVE FUN

After the event
• Fill out the Remittance page on this site and tell us how many participated at your site
• Contact us if you didn't receive your free copies of Zymurgy for Beginners
• Click here for post-event numbers
• Teach your friends how to bottle the beer you brewed together
• Encourage new homebrewers to go to their local homebrew supply shop
• Buy an American Homebrewers Association membership as a gift for new homebrewers
• Have new homebrewers check out www.beertown.org/ for up-to-date brewing information

Last November there were 128 sites registered for Teach A Friend to Homebrew Day on the first Saturday of November. Roughly 1200 brewers gathered and brewed up over 2,200 gallons of beer while teaching another 540 people how to brew. Teach a Friend to Homebrew sites were registered in 31 states, Canada, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Indonesia, and two sites in South Africa.

Here's an interesting piece about Belgium and multiculturalism. Gotta love the last sentence, I'll paste it below. -A

http://townhall.com/Columnists/MichaelMedved/2007/10/10/no,_americas_nev...

"With relief and confidence, we can follow current events and the various separatist movements in Europe, where true multiculturalism continues to bear its invariably bitter fruit, as we watch the unfolding sorry fate of quarreling Flemings and Walloons in ill-arranged little Belgium, where the beer is stronger than any unifying nationalism and the chocolate’s sweeter than the future."

Beer Tune Lyrics

Reckless Kelly
"Seven Nights In Eire"

The first pub we could stagger to was twelve steps from the plane
A Virgin flight to Shannontown the day it didn't rain
The laughing eyes of Ireland sparkling blue and green
With hair as black as Guinness stout and barely seventeen

We're back out on the cobblestones
Whiskey drunk and high again
Liquored up and gearing up for seven nights in Ireland

The corner booth is waiting for the session to begin
It's quiet as a mother's prayer 'til we all stumble in
And it's fifty happy voices mixed with whistles made of tin
And a piper man is blowing like the North Atlantic wind

And an Aran island beauty is sawing on the violin
I wonder will she miss me after seven nights in Ireland

It's Ladies' Day in Galway and we watched the ponies run
Fifty pounds against the odds and came in six to one
McSwiggin heard the race report, he invited us on in
So we drank Catholic whiskey with all our newfound friends

They raised a glass to all of us and we all toasted them
Here's to Michael, Tom and Pat and seven nights in Ireland

Well we kissed all the girls goodbye and gathered in our gear
And when she walked me to the gate I swear I saw a tear
But then she looked into my eyes I knew she felt my pain
And only then I realized we were standing in the rain

So save our places at the pub and when the eyes are dry again
We'll come back another day for seven nights in Ireland

Artist: Young Chris
Song: Beer Or Gasoline
Album: Chris Young

Two dollars shy of a five dollar bill
Last mile I pushed my truck uphill
About hurt me
I left my truck by the pump right where I parked it
Walked through the doors of the Last Chance Market
Have mercy, I was thirsty
The guy behind the counter said what's it gonna be
I said I don't know man, you tell me

It's a gallon of gas, or a cold six pack
One goes in my tank, one comes in a sack
Makes life complicated when it costs the same
Hell it ain't no fun, to do without one
But I'll do a lot of walkin' if my motor don't run
It's a tough ol' choice to make if you know what I mean
It's either beer of gasoline

I could feel that video camera watch me
Checkin' out the sale on the ol' Milwaukee
(Mmm) Three bucks to my name
That cooler had every brand known to man
Tall boys, bottles, and aluminum cans
(Aww) What a shame
And it's gettin' pretty bad when you finally discover
It all comes down to either one or the other

It's a gallon of gas, or a cold six pack
One goes in my tank, one comes in a sack
Makes life complicated when it costs the same
Hell it ain't no fun, to do without one
But I'll do a lot of walkin' if my motor don't run
It's a tough ol' choice to make if you know what I mean
It's either beer of gasoline

I could see where this is headed
And I'm tired of talkin'
Cold beer unleaded
Hell I'm walkin'

It's a gallon of gas, or a cold six pack
One goes in my tank, one comes in a sack
Makes life complicated when it costs the same
Hell it ain't no fun, to do without one
But I'll do a lot of walkin' if my motor don't run
It's a tough ol' choice to make if you know what I mean
It's either beer of gasoline

Beer or gasoline

It's a gallon of gas, or a cold six pack
One goes in my tank, one comes in a sack

Now it ain't no fun to do without one
But I'll do a lot of walkin' if my motor don't run

Artist: Bentley Dierks
Song: Domestic, Light And Cold
Album: Modern Day Drifter

Hey bartender, can I make one special request?
My woman left me, so tonight I'll be drinkin' your best.
I'm not talkin' about Single Malt, Scotch, Jagermeister, or Cuervo Gold.
I'll take anything domestic, light, and cold.

Domestic, light, and cold, that's what I'm havin'.
Serve me up any old, iced-down American classic.
Pop a top, crack a can, just don't make me wait too long.
I'll take, anything domestic, light, and cold.

No, I wasn't cheatin'. She just said that I was hard to please.
And I'll admit it: I can be set in my country ways.
So go ahead and break out the good stuff, if I can be so bold.
I'll take anything domestic, light, and cold.

Domestic, light, and cold, that's what I'm havin'.
Serve me up any old, iced-down American classic.
Pop a top, crack a can, just don't make me wait too long.
I'll take, anything domestic, light, and cold.

You've got beer from all over the world on the wall.
I can even get a free t-shirt, if I try them all.
But tonight I'm in the mood for some of that home-grown brew!

Yeah, pop a top, crack a can, just don't make me wait too long.
I'll take, anything domestic, hey I know what the best is.
Anything domestic, light, and cold!

Artist: Gill Vince
Song: What The Cowgirls Do
Album: When Love Finds You

Have you ever been down to Texas
Down around San Antone
They love to go all night and treat you right
And party till the cows come home

I love it when they let their hair down
And dance real close to you
You know I'm a sucker baby for what the cowgirls do
What the cowgirls do

They ain't no different up in Oklahoma
They ain't afraid to stay up 'til dawn
They love to cut a rug and chug a lug
Longnecks til their money's all gone

I love it when the let their hair down
And dance real close to you
You know I'm a sucker baby for what the cowgirls do
What the cowgirls do

There's cowgirls all across the country
From Baton Rouge to Bangor Maine
It ain't hard to see they'll be the death of me
They're gonna drive my little heart insane

I love it when the let their hair down
And dance real close to you
You know I'm a sucker baby for what the cowgirls do
What the cowgirls do
