September 2007
Hi All,
The September WSB meeting will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at Marti and Ernie's place between Silverdale and Seabeck, starting at 2 pm. Contact Us for directions.
October's meeting will be at Galen's place in Manette (far north end of East Bremerton), date and time to be announced. November's meeting will be at Brad's in Poulsbo. If you want to host a meeting, or if I've forgotten that you were scheduled for one of these meetings, please let us know ASAP.
See the website for KCF homebrew competition results. Matt Riggs eked out a victory over several virtually deadlocked beers. He will work with the guys at Heads Up to replicate his Dickie saison and keep us posted on its progress.
Consider entering the contest next year if you didn't this year. For only $7 you get 5 one day exhibitor passes to the fair. Usual adult single daily admission is about that price.

These are really cool etched and screened stemmed logo glasses from the original pilsner brewery. They're tall modified stemmed flutes, very attractive and very high quality, with no rolled edge.

Metal thieves hit brewery
http://www.forestgrovenewstimes.com/news/story.php?story_id=118902100384...
Several publicans in the Seattle area have mentioned problems with keg theft lately, and now some of the distributors are starting to charge huge deposits for kegs. It could really hurt the bottom line of smaller multitap ale houses in the region. Be wary of any overly cheap kegs that might be offered to you, they may still be owned by a brewery, distributor, or pub and the police may be looking for them. Please report suspicious cases of cheap kegs.
From the Oregon Brew Crew mailing list:
For US hops 2007 is looking like an average crop, but not a bumper
crop. Slovenia (grower of Styrians) lost at least 1/3 and possibly as much
as 1/2 of their crop to a hailstorm. The Czech crop is down 25% this
year. Estimated alphas on Czech Saaz from the 2007 crop are 2.7 2.9. The
German crop is average at best with earlier aroma hops coming in below
normal (such as Hallertau Mittelfruh). New Zealand and Australia crops
this year (which arrived in the US in June and July) were normal.
England is almost out of the hop business. Their acreage of 2,400 in 2006
(down from 17,000 in 1976) represents 2 percent of the worldwide
acreage.

An intriguing recipe by Steve Adams from this year's KCF homebrew contest:
Here is my Peanut Butter Ale recipe, I think I will make a few changes.
Peanut Butter Ale
Grains
1 1/4 lb Crystal 40
3/4 lb Crystal 80
1 Lb Crystal 120
Malts and adjuncts
3 lbs Dry light Malt Extract
2 Lbs Dry Amber Malt Extract
3 Lbs Honey
1 Jar (32 oz.) Adams Peanut Butter
Hops
2.5 Oz, Fuggle Hops
1 Oz. Kent Goldings
Wyeast Belgian Witbier
Use fuggles in the 60 min boil, add peanut butter in last 10 minutes of boil (to melt peanut butter)
Add Kent goldings to last 2 minutes of boil. After secondary fermentation rack for a third time to
help clear and cut down on sediment. The longs this beer ages the more peanut butter aroma and flavor.
Head retention might be a little lacking but taking into account for the oils from the peanut butter it is still good
I was told it tastes like the peanut butter candies you get at Halloween. Makes 5 gallons. Enjoy.

Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day
November 3, 2007
Gather your beer loving friends for a brew session on the first Saturday of November.
What is Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day?
The American Homebrewers Association (AHA) Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day is an international event to introduce people to the homebrewing hobby and establish relationships with local homebrew supply shops.
Each year on the first Saturday in November, homebrewers around the world are encouraged to invite non-brewing and brewing friends and family to celebrate Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day and brew a batch of beer together.
Before the event, participants that have Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day events register their site on this web page. These registered sites help the American Homebrewers Association track how many participants celebrated the event. TEACH A FRIEND TO HOMEBREW DAY FACTS:
2006: More than 1200 brewers taught 540 people how to brew at 51 sites, producing over 2,200 gallons of homebrew in the process. Sites were registered in 31 states, and in Canada, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Indonesia, and South Africa.
2005: 1839 homebrewers taught 583 new homebrewers how to brew at 184 sites in 36 states, 3 Canadian provinces, 3 Australian provinces, South Africa, and Guam.
2004: 1179 participants introduced 423 new homebrewers to the hobby at 137 different sites.
How to Celebrate
Before the event
• Register your Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day site
• View registered sites
• Invite friends who are not yet homebrewers to teach them to brew beer at home
• Take your new homebrew recruits to your local homebrew supply shop to buy ingredients
• Hold a special beer dinner for friends or family you’re going to teach to homebrew
During the event
• Tell friends and family about other American Homebrewers Association fun events – Big Brew, National Homebrewers Conference, Mead Day
• Hand out free copies of Zymurgy for Beginners to all your friends.
• Bring out homebrewing literature for your friends to read– Zymurgy, Zymurgy for Beginners, The Complete Joy of Homebrewing and other homebrewing books
• Drink homebrew, pair your homebrew with food and HAVE FUN
After the event
• Fill out the Remittance page on this site and tell us how many participated at your site
• Contact us if you didn't receive your free copies of Zymurgy for Beginners
• Click here for post-event numbers
• Teach your friends how to bottle the beer you brewed together
• Encourage new homebrewers to go to their local homebrew supply shop
• Buy an American Homebrewers Association membership as a gift for new homebrewers
• Have new homebrewers check out www.beertown.org/ for up-to-date brewing information
Last November there were 128 sites registered for Teach A Friend to Homebrew Day on the first Saturday of November. Roughly 1200 brewers gathered and brewed up over 2,200 gallons of beer while teaching another 540 people how to brew. Teach a Friend to Homebrew sites were registered in 31 states, Canada, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Indonesia, and two sites in South Africa.

BEERY POETRY
Strong Beer
“What do you think
The bravest drink
Under the sky?”
“Strong beer,” said I.
“There’s a place for everything,
Everything, anything,
There’s a place for everything
Where it ought to be:
For a chicken, the hen’s wing;
For poison, the bee’s sting;
For almond-blossom, Spring;
A beerhouse for me.”
“There’s a prize for every one
Every one, any one,
There’s a prize for every one,
Whoever he may be:
Crags for the mountaineer,
Flags for the Fusilier,
For English poets, beer!
Strong beer for me!”
“Tell us, now, how and when
We may find the bravest men?”
“A sure test, an easy test:
Those that drink beer are the best,
Brown beer strongly brewed,
English drink and English food.”
Oh, never choose as Gideon chose
By the cold well, but rather those
Who look on beer when it is brown,
Smack their lips and gulp it down.
Leave the lads who tamely drink
With Gideon by the water brink,
But search the benches of the Plough,
The Tun, The Sun, The Spotted Cow,
For jolly rascal lads who pray,
Pewter in hand, at close of day,
“Teach me to live that I may fear
The grave as little as my beer.”
Robert Graves
Beer in the Bath
I get some hot water
And some bubble-bath
I mix it together
To make a hot bath
I take ice cold lager
And guzzle it down
I'll get myself drunk
And try not to drown
Beer in the bath
Beer in the bath
I like drinking beer in the bath
I listen to music
And sometimes sing along
But when I get drunk
I get the words wrong
I finish a can
Pour the dregs on my head
I don't use shampoo
I use beer instead
Beer in the bath
Beer in the bath
I like drinking beer in the bath
Drinking in the shower
The same it just ain't
After three cans
You start to feel faint
I've been here an hour
Since twenty to eight
I open another
Cold lager is great
Beer in the bath
Beer in the bath
I like drinking beer in the bath
I drink my last beer
Then call to my brother
'Please go to the fridge
and get me another'
I've drunk my last beer
It's time to get washed
Dried and then dressed
And go out and get sloshed
Beer in the bath
Beer in the bath
Yes, I like drinking beer in the bath
-Eric Jackson
BEERY SONG LYRICS
Van Zant
"Goes Down Easy"
1st Verse
I don't care if it comes in a bottle
I don't care if it comes in a can
I don't care if it's stirred or shaken
Man, could you give me one for both hands
Chorus
If it goes down easy
(Yeah) it makes you feel good
If it goes down easy
It makes you feel good
2nd Verse
Sign on the wall said no dancin' on the tables
She never lets the rules get in her way
No, she don't
She got da whole joint jumpin' and goin' crazy, ha ha ha
She grabbed my hand and danced me right outta the place
Out of the place
(Repeat Chorus)
Bridge
Might be one 'a those fine French wines
Might be some good ol' damn homebrew
Long as we get to have a good time
Most times anything will do
(Repeat Chorus)
Spoken
Oh, that sound is sweet to me, man
Listen here now
3rd Verse
There're things in life that just keep gettin' better
Ah, yeah
I said no, but I guess maybe I meant yes, ha ha ha
Hey, she insisted, so I just had to let her
When it's that smooth who really cares what anybody says
I don't
Tag Chorus
(So if it goes down easy)
(It makes you feel good)
It makes you feel good
(If it goes down easy)
(It makes you feel good)
(If it goes down easy)
Keep it comin' baby, fill up my glass
(It makes you feel good)
It's killin' me and I like it like that
(If it goes down easy)
Maybe we shouldn't, maybe we should
(It makes you feel good)
All I know is it makes you feel good
(If it goes down easy)
I makes you feel good
(It makes you feel good)

Song: These Are My People
Album: If You're Going Through Hell
Well We grew up Down by the railroad Tracks
shootin BB's at old beer cans
Choakin' on the smoke from a lucky strike
somebody lifted off his old man
We were Football Flunkies
Southern Rock Junkies
Crankin' up the stereo's
Singing Loud and Proud
to "Gimmie Three Steps" "Simple Man" and "Curtis Low"
We were big yuh know
Got some discount Knowledge at the Jr. Collage
Where we majored in beer and girls
It was all real funny 'til we ran out of money
and they threw us out into the world
Yeah the kids that thought they'd run this town
ain't a runnin' much of anything
just lovin' and laughin' and bustin' our asses
and we all call it all livin' the dream
These are my people
This is where I come from
Were givin' this life everything we got and then some
It ain't always pretty
But its real
It's the way we were made
Wouldn't have it any other way
These are my people
Well We take it all week on the chin with a grin
'til we make it to a friday night
And it's church league softball
holler about a bad call
preacher breaking up the fight
Then later on at the Green Light Tavern
Well everybody is gathered as friends
And the beers a pourin'
'til Monday mornin'
and we start it all over again
These are my people
This is where I come from
Were givin' this life everything we got and then some
It ain't always pretty
but it's real
It's the way we were made
Wouldn't have it any other way
These Are My People
We fall Down and We get up
We walk proud and We talk tough
We got heart and We got nerve
Even If we are a bit disturbed
Woo Come on
These are my people
This is where I come from
Were givin' this life everything we got and then some
It ain't always pretty
but it's real
Its the way we were made
Wouldn't have it any other way Ah naw
These Are My People Yeah woo
