Kitsap County Fair Homebrew Competition (beer, mead, cider, and hybrids)
You should have received a mailing about this. Submissions are accepted starting this weekend and through August 11. Dropoff spots are Heads Up and Hood Canal Brewery. You'll find flyers there with enough info to get you started, and with bottle labels printed on the back.
This is a great way to get honest detailed feedback on your creations. We'll try to recruit more outside judges this year and maybe do one round of judging across the pond in Seattle. Almost everybody takes home a ribbon, and we have very generous sponsors who offer an assortment of other prizes. Spread the word to other brewers or brew clubs in the area. Yes, submissions are accepted from our friends in Hawaii, New Zealand, etc.
This Sunday the cooperative bourbon barrel imperial stout will be removed from the barrel and replaced with English/JW Lees style barley wine. After that we'll work on some strong Belgian ale to replace the BW. One suggested recipe so far is a replica of Rochefort 8. There's a possibility that we'll need 2-3 more brewers to contribute strong Belgians to the effort. We'll keep you posted. I imagine somebody will bring some of the BBIS to next Saturday's meeting to share the fruits of our efforts.
Two upcoming tastings-
1. Tart beer tasting. Several folks in the club would like to gather and share lambics, oud bruins, Flemish Red, Berliner Weiss, etc. We'll save the dregs of some of the appropriate bottles and culture them up for our future tart beers. Eventually these will probably go into the bourbon barrel, after the imperial stout, barley wine, and strong Belgian, and maybe some other brews have sucked all the bourbon character out of the oak. Nothing scheduled yet, discuss this at the June meeting.
2. Port/Madeira/Sherry tasting. Several folks in the club would like to gather and share port, madeira, sherry, and similar wines. One member has offered to sell shares in a bottle of her 1975 vintage porto, an incredible treat. We'll likely invite a bunch of local wine snobs as well. Is wine snob an affectionate term, like beer geek? Nothing scheduled yet, discuss this at the June meeting.
You can still make it down to PIB. The bier list this year is absolutely incredible, easily the best ever from the IB fests. It's killing me that I can't make it.

The Taphouse Grill in downtown Seattle has opened in the old long abandoned site of the Planet Hollywood. The beer and food lists mirror their Bellevue venue. Happy hour eats are a great deal, and how can you go wrong with 160 taps? Actually, I can think of a lot of ways they can go wrong, but they've got it all figure out and dialed in.
Two of the best summer beers have returned to the region but I don't see them in Kitsap stores yet. You might want to ask your local grocers about this.
Trumer Pils from Berkeley is a wonderful pils that replicates the one brewed in their original brewery in Austria.
LeFebvre Blanche de Bruxelles is one of the best wits, with different citrusy notes than most wits (their Barbar Honey Ale, a Belgian barley wine, is also back in Seattle).
Beer poems-
Strong Beer, by Robert Graves
"What do you think
The bravest drink
Under the sky?"
"Strong beer," said I.
"There’s a place for everything,
Everything, anything,
There’s a place for everything
Where it ought to be:
For a chicken, the hen’s wing;
For poison, the bee’s sting;
For almond-blossom, Spring;
A beerhouse for me."
"There’s a prize for every one
Every one, any one,
There’s a prize for every one,
Whoever he may be:
Crags for the mountaineer,
Flags for the Fusilier,
For English poets, beer!
Strong beer for me!"
"Tell us, now, how and when
We may find the bravest men?"
"A sure test, an easy test:
Those that drink beer are the best,
Brown beer strongly brewed,
English drink and English food."
Oh, never choose as Gideon chose
By the cold well, but rather those
Who look on beer when it is brown,
Smack their lips and gulp it down.
Leave the lads who tamely drink
With Gideon by the water brink,
But search the benches of the Plough,
The Tun, the Sun, the Spotted Cow,
For jolly rascal lads who pray,
Pewter in hand, at close of day,
"Teach me to live that I may fear
The grave as little as my beer."
No Beer, No Work, by Ellis Parker Butler
The shades of night was fallin’ slow
As through New York a guy did go
And nail on ev’ry barroom door
A card that this here motter bore:
"No beer, no work."
His brow was sad, his mouth was dry;
It was the first day of July,
And where, all parched and scorched it hung,
These words was stenciled on his tongue:
"No beer, no work."
"Oh, stay," the maiden said, "and sup
This malted milk from this here cup."
A shudder passed through that there guy,
But with a moan he made reply:
"No beer, no work."
At break of day, as through the town
The milkman put milk bottles down,
Onto one stoop a sort of snore
Was heard, and then was heard no more—
"No beer, no work."
The poor old guy plumb dead was found
And planted in the buryin’ ground,
Still graspin’ in his hand of ice
Them placards with this sad device:
"No beer, no work."
The Beer Was Cold Enough, by Ivan Donn Carswell
It is amazing, while I lay in bed, I had the lines
roaring through my head like locusts on the wing,
the unabashed extravagance of such a flock
of stunning words shocked me out of brittle sleep;
and sleep avoids me now like something way too out of vogue,
so I rise and try to write, reflecting that I might at least
confine a rogue idea or two. It was a desperate hope.
My thoughts were caught in politics and patronymic
polymeric jingoistic shit concerning what it means to be
Australian. I’ve had the thoughts before and drowned
the bastards with the coldest draught of beer a man can stand,
and followed that with gallons more. I mean the thought
need not occur unless you’re not an Aussie. Or given over
to depressing thoughts. What brought this on?
Crikey, I don’t know – the beer was cold enough.

Beer tune lyrics-
Kim Mitchell (of the Fabulous Thunderbirds)
LAGER & ALE
late weekend night and i'm at the bojar grill
i got decisions to be made between lager and ale
when through the kitchen door come the dancing girl
then everything on the menu mattered
oh the thoughts in my head
oh if she knew
i hope she'll nod at this drunken bar slob
'cause i'm ready, willing and able
yes i'm ready, willing and able
over to the jukebox i staggered
for a love song to scatter my body before her
didn't have change and i lost my damn brains
so i started humming in-a-godda-da-vida
i'll pay the bar tab and even the cab
off to the hotel we'll wallow

My Last Ale Lyrics
[G. Feldhausen]
It was late at night when I was coming home
Wherever I may roam I'm always alone
I heard Old Nick calling me: My friend it's time to go
But there's something left for me that I have do
Don't bring me down
Don't bring me down
When I drink my last ale
I drink my last ale
I've turned the page I've closed that book of life
I'm on a crazy ride but I'm trying to survive
I'll enjoy my life till I have to go take it easy take it slow
I won't forget there's something left to do
Don't bring me down
Don't bring me down
When I drink my last ale
I drink my last ale
When the time has come to say good-bye
You don't have to cry
Raise your glass to the sky
Cause I will never die
Have a drink on me set the spirit free
And I will hear your call
Now the time is right for me to go
Cause that's the only way of Rock`n Roll
Going down the wrong way it has been a hard way
That's what I have to do
Living on the edge but never going back
I'm running against the storm
And when Old Nick is calling me: My friend it's time to go
There will be something left for me to do
Don't bring me down
Don't bring me down
When I drink my last ale
I drink my last ale
When the time has come to say good-bye
You don't have to cry
Raise your glass to the sky
Cause I will never die
Have a drink on me set the spirit free
And I will hear your call
Now the time is right for me to go
Cause that's the only way of Rock`n Roll
When the time is right to go

Belgium is literally heaven on Earth for the beer afficionado!
No other country can boast of more distinct, individualistic styles,

HIT IT! - BEASTIE BOYS
HOLD IT NOW Lyric
Now I chill real ill when I start to chill
When I fill my pockets with a knot of dollar bills
Sipping pints of ale out the window sill
When I get my fill I'm chilly chill
Now I just got home because I'm out on bail
What's the time? it's time to buy ale
Peter eater parking meter all of the time
If I run out of ale it's Thunderbird wine
Miller drinking chicken eating dress so fly
I got friends in high places that are keeping me high
Down with Mike D. and it ain't no hassle
Got the ladies of the eighties from here to White Castle
Hold it now - hit it!
M.C. Adam Yauch in the place to be
And all the girls are on me cause I'm down with Mike D.
I'm down with Mike D. and it ain't no baloney
For real, not phony "O.E." and Rice-a-Roni
I come out at night 'cause I sleep all day
And I'm the King Adrock and he's M.C.A.
Well I'm cruising, I'm bruising I'm never ever losing
I'm in my car I'm going far and dust is what I'm using
Around the way is where I'm from
And I'm from Manhattan and I'm not a bum
Because you're pud-slapping, ball-flapping - got that juice
My name's Mike D. and I can do that Jerry Lewis
[repeat chorus]
Hip-hop, body rockin' doing the do
Beer drinking, breath stinking, sniffing glue
Belly flipping, always illing, busting caps
My name's Mike D. and I write my own snaps
I'm a peep-show seeking on the forty-deuce
I'm a killer at large and I'm on the loose
Pistol packing, Monkey drinking, no money bum
I come from Brooklyn 'cause that's where I'm from
Cheap-skate, perpetrating - money hungry jerk
Everyday I drink a "O.E." and I don't go to work
You drippy nose knuckle-head - you're wet behind the ears
You like men - and we like beer.
[repeat chorus]
King of the Ave. with the Def female
You're rhyming and stealin' with the freshest ale
Cooling at the crib watching my TV
Ed Norton - Ted Knight - and Mr. Ed
Pump it up homeboy just don't stop
Chef Boy-ar-dee cooling on the pot
I take no slack cause I got the knack
And I'm never dusting out cause I torch that crack
The King Adrock that is my name
And you're drinking Moet we got the champagne
A quarter dropping going shopping buying wigs
Surgeon general cut professor D.J. Thigs
[repeat chorus]
