October 2008
Hi All,
This month's WSB meeting will be, well, I'll leave that to Marti's note:
Ernie and I will host the October meeting on Saturday, the 18th, starting at 4pm. The theme is Halloween, so bring your spookiest beer. And wear your scariest t-shirt. Commercial pumpkin beers sounds interesting - already had enough Octoberfests last meeting. Bought the Deschutes Dissident at Central Market - will open it at the tasting.
Contact Us for directions.
We will be in Denver from the 6th thru the 14th and won't be able to check emails. But, we will be checking phone messages.
See you soon, Marti and Ernie
Matt counted 19.6 people at Mark's for last month's meeting. There were a bunch of new faces that we hope to see again soon, and regularly from now on.

Sasquatch Stout - debuted this week
Big, black and beautiful, this hairy beast is an elusive Northwest original, loaded with roasted malt and dosed generously with Amarillo and Centennial hops. Sasquatch is a complex, dark roasted monster that is more than just dark and bitter. Given a chance Sasquatch becomes quite warm and cuddly and may even turn into the life of the party. Don't be afraid of the beast... Sasquatch needs love too.

Pubsters,
SIX NEW TAPS AT BPP!
We finally got around to installing extra lines so we can offer even more great beer on draught! Some brews recently tapped include Russian River Pliny the Elder, Deschutes Dissident Oud Brune, Full Sail 21st Anniversary Doppelbock, Sierra Nevada Anniversary, Scuttlebutt 777 Tripel, and more! We'll be adding two nitro taps in the near future as well!
HOLY LITERS OF LIQUID LUPULIN, BATMAN!
HOPTOBERFEST is HERE!
Beginning October 3rd, we'll feature up to 10 rotating Washington State IPAs on tap as we enjoy nearly a month of bitter revelry! We'll even toss in a few out-of-state guest brews for fun, but we all know the best stuff's made right here.
Hoptoberfest is also the time of year that we elect our house IPA for 2009. Here's how it works:
v Come to BPP and order a liter of IPA (OK, a pint is acceptable, too)
v Get a ballot (one vote per person per day)
v Repeat as necessary
v From Oct. 3 – 13, you can nominate any Washington-brewed IPA, even if it's not currently on tap (no "Imperials")
v From Oct 14 – 22, we will provide a primary ballot with the top eight nominees
v From Oct 23 – 31, we will provide a general election ballot with the top three from the primary
CASK THURSDAYS IN OCTOBER
It's Hoptoberfest, so IPAs are the order:
October 16 – Water Street Queen Nina IPA
October 23 – Harmon Pt. Defiance IPA
October 30 – TBA IPA
THUR, NOV 6, 6:00pm – IPA CASK-O-RAMA!!!
Just want to make sure you mark your calendars now, because you don't want to miss 24 cask-conditioned, Washington-brewed IPAs covering the bartop. We'll also be announcing the winner of the Hoptoberfest vote, which determines which IPA becomes our "house" IPA for 2009!
Cheers!
Gary, Terri, Jennifer, Rob, Dennis, Kate, Devrim, and the occasional Ryan
Note from Uber bier tavern:
OUR GREATEST BREWERY NIGHT EVER?
--An evening with Rob Tod and Allagash Brewery, Thursday October 16th
7 special kegs, 1 great night
We've been very fortunate to host a lot of great breweries and pour many outstanding beers on special nights, but this one we will probably never top.
Allagash Brewery Founder Rob Tod is making the 3000 mile journey from Portland Maine to join us at Über Tavern for a night of good times.
Thanks to Rob we will be featuring some very special beers, seven to be exact, which read like a "Dream Team" keg lineup. The centerpiece of the evening will be the tapping of Interlude, their 2nd most highly rated beer EVER. For a brewery that has produced over 30 different beers, many of which are very highly rated, this is really saying something.
Arguably the greatest Belgian-style brewery in the United States, Allagash has proven many times that it is not a one-trick-pony brewery, but instead one capable of producing masterpiece after masterpiece. Come taste the proof on tap! We will also have complimentary pub snacks, plus gourmet sausage & artisanal cheeses. Here's the list:
Interlude: 9.5% Belgian Strong Ale
-- Two yeast strains help create this heavenly ale. Belgian farmhouse yeast establishes the style-foundation initially. A house strain of Brettanomyces yeast brings it to the next level in secondary fermentation. Finally, Interlude is aged in French oak Merlot & Syrah barrels, then bottle/cask conditioned. It is outrageous effort to make a bottle or keg of beer, yielding magnificent red wine notes and funky farmhouse flavors.
Musette: 10% Belgian Scotch Ale
--An interpretation of a Belgian-inspired Scotch Ale or Wee Heavy, Musette uses Belgian yeast and a portion of each batch is aged in Oak Bourbon Barrels for an additional three months prior to kegging/bottling.
Curieux: 11% Bourbon Barrel-Aged Belgian Tripel
--The ultimate "house beer" of Über Tavern, Curieux is aged for 8 weeks in Jim Beam Bourbon Barrels. The wood and bourbon component of each batch of Curieux can vary greatly because it is aged in very "wet" cask-strength bourbon barrels, which by their very nature have great range in strength & intensity on their own. This beer is always an incredible treat.
Fluxus 2008: 8.7% Double White Beer spiced with Ginger
--Each batch of Fluxus is a completely different recipe and style. It is brewed once a year to commemorate Allagash's anniversary. This 2008 batch celebrates 13 years of brewing. It is a double white beer brewed with spices and fresh grated ginger, a style which calls for twice the amount of malted and raw wheat as a standard Belgian Wit, thus casting an elegant cloudiness over this mango-colored beer.
Hugh Malone: 8.5% Hoppy Belgian Strong Ale
--The base includes English two-row malt and pale crystal malts, establishing an understated sweetness. Then generous portions of Simcoe hops are added at three points. To begin with, "first-wort" hopping is done in which Simcoe is added to the sweet wort as it enters the kettle. When the wort comes to a boil in the kettle, Warrior hops are added as another layer of bittering hops. For late-hopping, a large amount of Simcoe is steeped in the whirlpool to enhance the aromatics. Finally it is dry-hopped during secondary fermentation in the bright tank.
Tripel Reserve: 9% Belgian Tripel
--The 3rd most highly rated beer from Allagash, this is a classic version of a classic style. Often overlooked amidst their other mind-blowing exotic beers, the Tripel (also the base beer for Curieux) is a tremendous example of a brewing style which is very hard to perfect. This beer is arguably THE original high-end benchmark Belgian style beer from the United States.
White: 5% Belgian Wit bier
--Incredibly quaffable, White is the "flagship" beer of the brewery. It is a traditional Belgian wheat beer, lightly spiced, citrusy, a bit sweet, and very refreshing. A modern classic.
We are eternally grateful for getting these very special kegs from Rob. Please stop by to try them all and meet the man behind the beers.
See you under the bar,
Your friends at Über Tavern

Falling Down Drunk
A man had had far too much to drink
Now I must go home he began to think
He tried to stand up and fell to the floor
So he decided to crawl out of the door
Then after a little fresh air he tried again
But he fell face down in the drain again
"I will never get up" to himself he said
I won't try again I'll crawl home instead
His wife found him on the step asleep
"I went for a drink" he said like a sheep
"And I know what made you crawl so far
Your wheelchair's still in the public bar"

Johnny Bond "Ten Little Bottles"
A friend of mine gave me ten little bottles
Of some special stuff that he brewed up his-self
So I took it and hid it down in my basement
But my wife found out about it and she told me to get rid of it or else
And since I didn't like the way she said or else
I went down there and proceeded to carry out her instructions
I sat the ten little bottles on the drainboard
Picked up the first bottle, pulled the cork out of it
And poored it down the sink
That is, um, all except one little swallow - which I drank
I picked up the next bottle and I pulled the cork out of it
And poured it down the sink
All except one little swallow - which I drank
I picked up the next bottle and I pulled the sink out of it
And I poured it down the cork
All except one little swallow - which I drank
I picked up the next cork and I pulled the bottle out of it
And I poured it down the sink
All except one little drink - which I drank
I picked up the next sink and I pulled the cork out of it
And I poured it down the bottle
All except one little swallow - which I sank
I picked up the next drink and I pulled the swallow out of it
And I poured it down the sink
All except one little drink - I think
Well anyway by this time it's plain to see
That them little bottles of mine, let's see now
How many bottles have I got left - which I drank
Now I'm askin' you wasn't that a awful thing for my wife to make me do
Bless her little heart, bl-less her little heart, I'm tellin' ya one thing
You better not say nothin' against my wife buster
'Cause I'll have you know, I'll - have - you - know
That I've got da wifest little nice you ever saw in your [hicc]
Which I drank

I can't believe it's already past noon
On my arm there's a strange new tattoo
Shirt on the fan blade - pants on the lampshade
You get the picture, clear as a bell
You get the picture, just hang it on your bedroom wall
You get the picture, and put a frame around it
Empty bottle of tequila, Jose Cuervo margaritas
Popcorn and a game of Twister
You get the picture... you get the picture
A book of matches on my dresser from the Sky Bar
Doggie bag from Dos Amigos
That valet parker still has the keys to my car
Piece by piece, it's coming back to me
I met my buddies after work
We shot some pool, a couple beers
Before I knew it, we were rocking
Met some girls, we started talking
It's not like me to get nervous, but she was perfect
You get the picture, clear as a bell
You get the picture, just hang it on your bedroom wall
You get the picture, and put a frame around it
A mariachi band was playing, she was dancing close and swaying
Fireworks when I kissed her
You get the picture
Suddenly, the shower opens in a cloud of steam
Standing there, the woman of my dreams
You get the picture, clear as a bell
You get the picture, just hang it on your bedroom wall
You get the picture, and put a frame around it
You get the picture
You get the picture, clear as a bell
You get the picture, just hang it on your bedroom wall
You get the picture
