November 2008

Hi All,
This month's meeting will be held on Friday, Nov. 14, at Brad and Dina Ginn's home due east of downtown Poulsbo. I suppose it'll start around 7ish. Brad didn't suggest any beer style to focus on so bring any homebrew and any interesting commercial brews you'd like to show off.

"Parking is limited down our driveway. People who want to be assured of being able to get out when they want to leave can park at the east end of Hostmark, near the Hostmark/Noll intersection, which is a short walk from our house. There is parallel parking on the north side of Hostmark and some space adjacent to Strawberry Fields on the south side of the street.

We'll try to come up with some provision for illuminating our driveway so people don't have to stumble around in the dark walking down from the road."

I think we had 20+ people at Ernie & Marti's for last month's meeting. A bunch of new faces and loads of great beer and food. In December we'll meet at the Qualls' place in Illahee and in January we'll probably meet at Mary Earl's for the barley wine meeting. I forgot to confirm that with her.
Mark Hood submitted several beers to the National Organic Brewing Challenge. Here's his note about his awesome results:
I entered 3 beers in the National Organic Brewing Challenge, and won first place in light lager with a dortmunder, and 3rd in specialty for the doppelbock that also won best lager at KCF. There were 9 categories that got lumped into specialty in this competition, so that's why doppelbock got judged there. They judged them according to the BJCP guidelines for the correct style (i.e. doppelbock) but lumped the scoring all together for these 9 categories into specialty.

I don't know where the imperial hefeweizen placed, but below 3rd as they only posted the top three on the site.

I will now reimburse the corrupt good 'ol boys from our club that I flew down to Santa Cruz to judge. We had a nice flight together.

Silver City has an awesome Imperial Stout and MacFarlane's Scotch Ale on their seasonal taps. Don't miss them. With all the new equipment SCB will be adding they hope to have plenty of new seasonals coming along.
Hood Canal put their doppelbock on tap on Monday. Do you really need another excuse to get over there?
Sunday, November 9, is the 19th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Might be a good day to tip back a bottle or two of great Germanic brews:

Hale's Ales to open a taproom in Poulsbo? Rumors are flying. Keep your ears open.
The Toad House in East Bremerton is under new ownership, look for some changes. If you haven't been there yet the Toad House is in the Safeway parking lot off McWilliams. They have a great selection of draught and bottled beers and we know that the great pizzas will remain part of the new menu.
I think you still have time to vote for the best in the NW:

Old Bavarian Brewers' Journal online
From the OBC listserv:
Someone posted a link to an archive of the old Bavarian Brewers' Journal at the Franconian Beer Guide webbie. There are a ton of issues from the turn of the 20th century. I picked one at random and found about half of it to be of ads for brewing equipment, pure yeast strains, and what not.

Some might find it interesting. Go to http://tinyurl.com/5djxea
and scroll ahead through the ads. There are about 5 pages of ads for every 5 pages of not-easily-read text.

Subject: [Brewcrew] Duvel "Green" draft
To: "Oregon Brew Crew Official Discussion List."

Duvel has finally released a draft version of it's world class beer to the US market, the Green label. Lower in alcohol (6.8) and obviously lighter in carbonation so it will actually pour on draft. It was released in Manhattan in October and people are loving it. It should be in Oregon sometime in the early part of 09. Michael Jackson called Original Duvel one of the top 5 beers in the world! Maredsous beers, also owned by Duvel/Moortgat have released their Blond (or 6) into the US in Package and draft, they now have the Single, Brune/Dubbel and Tripel or 6,8 and 10 in the US.

Artist: Zac Brown Band
Song: Chicken Fried

You know I like my chicken fried
Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up
Well I was raised up beneath the shade of a Georgia pine
And that`s home you know
Sweet tea pecan pie and homemade wine
Where the peaches grow
And my house it`s not much to talk about
But it`s filled with love that`s grown in southern ground
And a little bit of chicken fried

Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up
Well I`ve seen the sunrise
See the love in my woman`s eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother`s love

Well its funny how it`s the little things in life that mean the most
Not where you live or the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes
There`s no dollar sign on a piece of mind this I`ve come to know
So if you agree have a drink with me
Raise you glasses for a toast
To a little bit of chicken fried

Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up
Well I`ve seen the sunrise
See the love in my woman`s eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother`s love

I thank god for my life
And for the stars and stripes
May freedom forever fly, let it ring.
Salute the ones who died
The ones that give their lives so we don`t have to sacrifice
All the things we love
Like our chicken fried

Cold beer on a Friday night
A pair of jeans that fit just right
And the radio up
Well I`ve seen the sunrise
See the love in my woman`s eyes
Feel the touch of a precious child
And know a mother`s love

Better Than This

That sleepy little campfire poppin' kinda crackling
We were Heating up the pork and beans
Bubba said man it don't get any better than this
If you know what I mean
We sat there for a minute listening to the crickets
Thinkin' this is pretty hard to beat
'til Jr. stood up spit in the fire
Said boys I hate to disagree

But if a bus load of women, really good looking women,
Just suddenly pulled in here
Old Joe T Garcia showed up with fajitas and a 100 gallon keg of beer
and Haggard dropped by And brought Willie with him
And they started taking requests
Well don't get me wrong boys this is pretty good
But it could get better than this

Bill Dance and Hank Parker floated by in a boat
And volunteered to be our fishing guides
And Richard Petty pulled up in the old 43 car
And asked us if we wanted a ride
We'd all sit around singin Poncho and Lefty
playing poker and smoking big cigars
Now don't take offense y'all I'm perfectly content
Just sittin here under the stars

But if a bus load of women, really good lookin women,
Just suddenly pulled in here
And Old Emeril Degasi showed up with kielbasi
And a 100 gallon keg of beer
If Haggard dropped by and brought Willie with him
And they started taking requests
Don't get me wrong boys this is pretty good
But it could get better than this

But if a bus load of women, really good lookin women,
Just suddenly pulled in here
And little Jenny Pickens showed up with fried chicken
And a 100 gallon keg of beer
Merle Haggard dropped by and brought Willie with him
And they started taking requests
Don't get me wrong boys this is pretty good
But it could get better that this

You Need A Man Around Here

You've sure got a real nice place
So don't take this the wrong way
But I can tell by your decorating taste
You've been alone too long
You've got more candles than a midnight mass
That fancy mirror adds a touch of class
But do you know how good a mounted bass
Would look there on that wall

[Chorus]
You need a man around here
You can't do it all by yourself
To me it's painfully clear
That you could use a little help
Someone to kill the spiders
Change the channel and drink the beer
Seems to me that you sure need
A man around here

Thumbing through your stack of magazines
I don't see a Maxim or Field&Stream
I haven't been in a room this clean
Since they took my appendix out
Well you've gotta be kidding me
Don't tell me that thing is your TV
My laptop's got a bigger screen
Baby, there ain't no doubt

[Repeat chorus]

Someone to kill the spiders
And by the way, you're out of beer
Seems to me that you sure need
A man around here
Yeah, it seems to me that you sure need
A man around here

Start a Band
Lyrics Brad Paisley and Keith Urban
Album : Play

I never was a straight-lace, straight A student
teacher’s pet or child prodigy
I wasn’t gonna get rich throwin’ a football
It takes too long to get a law degree

So I sat down with momma and daddy
tried to talk some sense into my big head
But the best advice that I ever got
was from my sister’s rock star boyfriend

Just get you a guitar and learn how to play
Cut up some jeans, come up with a name
When you’re living in a world that you dont understand
Find a few good buddies, start a band
Start a band, Start a band

And all those girls that were too cool to talk to,
They’ll be waiting in the line out back
Might get your picture in the hometown paper
Maybe buy your momma that Cadillac

Just get you a guitar and learn how to play
Cut up some jeans, come up with a name
When you’re living in a world that you don’t understand
Find a few good buddies, start a band

Start a band, Scrape up some money, buy a van
Learn "Freebird" and "Ramblin’ Man"
Never buy another beer again

Guitar solo

Just get you a guitar and learn how to play
Grow out your hair, come up with a name
With a little bit of luck you’ll be packing the stands
Find a few good buddies, start a band

No need to study, start a band
Call up some buddies man, start a band

Music till fade out

Ticks

Every time you take a sip
In this smokey atmosphere
You press that bottle to your lips
And I wish I was your beer
And in the small there of your back
Your jeans are playin' peek-a-boo
I'd like to see the other half
of your butterfly tattoo

Hey that gives me an idea
let's get out of this bar
Drive out into the country
And find a place to park

CHORUS
Cause I'd like to see you out in the moonlight
I'd like to kiss you way back in the sticks
I'd like to walk you in a field of wildflowers
And I'd like to check you for ticks

I know the perfect little path
Out in these woods I used to hunt
Don't worry babe I've got your back
And I've also got your front
I'd hate to waste a night like this
I'll keep you safe you wait and see
The only thing allowed to crawl all over you
When we get there is me

You know every guy in here tonight
Would like to take you home
But I got way more class than them
Babe that ain't what I want

CHORUS
Cause I'd like to see you out in the moonlight
I'd like to kiss you way back in the sticks
I'd like to walk you through a field of wildflowers
And I'd like to check you for ticks

Now ooohhh you never know where one might be
And ooohhh there's lots of places that are hard to reach

CHORUS
I'd like to see you out in the moonlight
I'd like you kiss you baby way back in the sticks
I'd like you walk you through a field of wildflowers
And I'd like to check you for ticks

Oh I'd sure like to check you for ticks

Come on!
