December 2008
Merry Christmas Everyone,
The Qualls are hosting this month's meeting on Friday, Dec. 19, 6ish. They live just SE of Illahee State Park. Next year's officers will be elected at this meeting. Consider running for office and consider who you would like to nominate for office. Our lifelong treasurer Don Wyatt and secretary Alan Moum wouldn't mind if somebody is interested in replacing them (keep trying Matt). Other than that we have a president and VP. If you have some good ideas or dreams for the direction of the club please offer them up.
Our traditional Christmas beer exchange will happen at this meeting too. Bring a bottle take a bottle. Wrap them so we can't guess what they are before we take them home.
If you don't have homebrew to bring Dave suggested bringing tripels, and any holiday seasonals would be apt.
Contact Us for directions
Our January meeting will be our trad barley wine meeting at Mary Earl's on the Sunday of MLK weekend. No sleepovers this time so start arranging for your ride home ASAP.
If our winter meetings are cancelled due to weather or power problems we'll try to let you know in advance.
Silver City does have their huge new fermenters and bright (brite?) tanks installed. Expect even more wonderful brews from them soon. Right now their seasonals are the Whoop Pass and Beautimus Weizenbock. Next up, maybe this weekend, is this year's batch of Fat Woody.
Hood Canal's Christmas potluck takes place on Sunday, Dec. 14:
This Sunday, December 14th is our annual Holiday Potluck! 4PM to closing time.
Beer will be discounted to $3 on standard pints.
Bring your favorite edible to share, and a pair of scissors for our Annual Snowflake Contest (with prizes)!
Also if you'd like to try your luck in our Third-Times-A-Charm gift exchange bring a wrapped gift (less than $10).
See you there,
Stacy

More local beer places to check out:
Tizley's in Poulsbo continues to bring in great taps and bottles, and they have new bottle/pint clubs, and Katie from Heads Up works there, and the Heads Up crowd has relocated there and gathers en masse on Fridays around 5-9, and they have great food, and they do great brewers dinners, and so much more. Check it out.
The Toad House by Safeway in East Bremerton has new owners and lots of new beers. Lately they've had quite a few holiday seasonals on tap. I had the Hale's tripel and it was so good that I grabbed a growler to go. The club house panino was killer too.
Commuter Comforts in the Seattle ferry terminal has been serving loads of great beers lately, and they've been in great shape. They had the Hale's tripel lately and may still have it. The Lang Creek Cherry Porter is amazing, not some sickly sweet fruity brew but a wonderfully balanced blend of malt, fruit, and so much more.
The Harbour Public House in Winslow keeps serving up great food and beer. Since the Hale's month they've kept his great beers coming. Linda works there weekend and Wednesday evenings, so swing on by and say hello.

WED, DEC 24 – CHRISTMAS EVE – Normal Hours
We’ll be open our normal hours: 3:00pm – 2:00am. What kind of beer does Santa drink? Delerium Noel? St Bernardus Christmas? Samichlaus?
THUR, DEC 25 – CHRISTMAS DAY – OPEN AT 6:00PM
Thanks to our volunteering beertenders, Dennis and April, you’ll have a place to wind down after dealing with all that “holiday stuff” in the day. Relaxation techniques include enjoying a pint of cask-conditioned Diamond Knot Industrial IPA!
WED, DEC 31 – NEW YEAR’S EVE!
What would you rather do tonight:
A) head downtown, struggle to find parking, stand out in the rain and cold at Seattle Center with a bunch of strangers, then get stuck in traffic for hours trying to get home; or
B) go to Beveridge Place , relax with some friends, make new friends, wear goofy hats and play with cheesy noise-makers, and have a midnight toast with Deus, Malheur Brut, Parxet 21, Black Bubbles, or another tasty beverage?
We thought so.
THUR, JAN 1 – BOURBON BREW BONANZA!
What better way to shake those NYE cobwebs out of your head than by enjoying some unique concoctions by northwest brewers. On tap will be Deschutes Abyss, Schooner Exact Hoppy the Woodsman, Issaquah Brewhouse Quad Frog, and Pike Entire, plus a selection of rare bottles (yeah, even that “Gold”)!
Cheers!

Balefire is open in Everett
Jon Tobey's pub/wine bar/bottle shop Balefire opened in Everett a couple weekends back. Spread the word. He and his crew are still whipping things into shape but it's already wonderful. Sounds like the beer and wine geeks who will be operating the place will constantly try to perfect things based on what they hear from their customers. I've attached the menu they printed out at opening on Tuesday night. Jon built a wonderful 24 bottle cruvinet for serving and maintaining the wines. They should taste as good as when opened for as long as necessary, of course any that need breathing will have that done before they're hooked up. The beer lines are about 3-6' long so that's great too. Jon intends to constantly rotate the tap beers. He'll gradually bring in bottled beers starting with the beer club. A weekly cask night and jeroboam night are also in the works.
On Mondays they'll be pouring 10 different wines at $3 per sample for the first 5, or $25 for all 10. These will likely be from bottles not featured in the cruvinet, at least eventually. This is also hoped to be a weekly event.
I had a few of the beers which were in great shape then moved on to the wines. The Churchill's "White" Porto was amazing. It was a bit blush which is odd for a white porto. The aromas hit you while several feet away and kept changing. I tried the three yummy dips on the menu with an apparently bottomless pile of sliced baguette (though I imagine this depends on how busy they are). Each dip was a revelation. They plan to keep bringing in pre-prepared foods and desserts by great artisanal chefs. The dips blended incredibly well with the porto and the late harvest Canoe Ridge Gewurtz and late harvest Cline Mauvedre. They also teamed well with the decadent chocolate mousse cake.
If you don't feel like driving to Everett, SoundTransit runs express trains and buses from downtown Seattle to downtown Everett. Get up there early and often.

I know next week's a liver killer for local beer geeks but this nice spot fits right into the extreme lineup.

p.s. I had a sip of Pike Entire at the pub this afternoon (their bottles were sold out on site). If you can get any get them soon. They sold out immediately at Pike's taproom. They'll probably put 2-3 bottle restrictions on as soon as they realize how great it is. And save a few bottles if you take pity on me.

If you haven't been to Uber or Duck Island north of downtown Seattle, on Aurora west of Green Lake's "duck island" you should get up there, and soon. Pike releases Pike Entire Wood-Aged Stout
Many of you lucky WABLers got to try this very special limited release by Pike Brewing Co. at last month's WABL Anniversary Party when it made its debut. Now Pike Entire is available at select bottle shops and grocery stores but they are disappearing VERY quickly so grab a few bottles if you are luck enough to find them! There are also several kegs that will be distributed to the following establishments in the near future (a few of them are on tap now) so keep your eye out!
Brouwer's Cafe
The Dray
Malt & Vine
Fiddler's Inn
Latona Pub
Tap House Grill- Seattle
Dog & Pony
Fred's Rivertown Alehouse
Beveridge Place Pub
Naked City Taphouse
The Summit Tavern
The Parkway
Pike Entire is a blend of three beers: Pike's XXXXX Extra Stout, original gravity 10.73 / alcohol 7.00%; the same beer aged for more than half a year in oak Bourbon barrels; and an Imperial Stout original gravity 10.98 / alcohol 12%. The Entire blend contains 42.7% barrel aged beer and finishes at 9.5% alcohol. The taste is complex with velvety malt tones, a coffee aroma, and a palate and finish of bitter chocolate. The biscuity character of pale and crystal malts, along with roasted barley, is balanced by a generous amount of Yakima Valley Willamette, Goldings and Columbus hops in the boil; finished with even more Willamette and Goldings. Adding complexity are the underlying wood tones perfumed by the caramel sweetness of wood-aged Kentucky Bourbon.

"Not Just the Beer Talkin"
I've been coming here half my life
And I see her all the time
It sure is hard to cowboy up
And say what's on my mind
I get tongue tied a little zipper lipped
And act to seriously
But it's a whole different ball game
When I get a couple in me
Chorus
That's when my mouth starts running like a draft tap
And I'm professing my love to her over and over
But I can't tell her till I have a little liquid confidence
But I mean what I say and I say what I mean
Though I say it with a slight slur
I love her and it's not just the beer talking
Verse 2
She knows right around a pint or two
I'll probably come sliding up
And give her an earful of I love you's
Until she's heard enough
I'll tell her it's not just temporary
And I want us to last
She thinks they're words
And not much more
spoken through an empty glass
That's when my mouth starts running like a draft tap
And I'm professing my love to her over and over
But I can't tell her till I have a little liquid confidence
But I mean what I say and I say what I mean
Though I say it with a slight slur
I love her and it's not just the beer talking
Not just the beer talking
Not just the mouth on the long necked bottle
Not just the beer talking no sir I love her
And it's not just the beer talkin'
chorus X1
Bridge
In the sober light of day
Every single word I say
Is gonna come out crystal clear
And in our golden years
Chorus 3
My mouth will still be running like a draft tap
I'll be professing my love to her over and over
I'll still tell her when I have a little liquid confidence
And I'll mean what I say and I'll say what I mean
Though I'll say it with a slight slur
I love her and it's not just the beer talking
Not just the beer talking
Not just the mouth on the long necked bottle
Not just the beer talking no sir I love her
And it's not just the beer talkin'

"Bartenders, Barstools, and Barmaids"
Bartenders, barstools, and barmaids
A jukebox and a pocket full of change
Just a few of my favorite things
Bartenders, barstools, and barmaids
Bartenders will listen when you talk
And barstools are there when you can't walk
And I'll always make a waitress my best friend
Until the music stops and closin time begins
Bartenders, barstools, and barmaids
A jukebox and a pocket full of change
Just a few of my favorite things
Bartenders, barstools, and barmaids

But in here it's a world of song and smoke
That way my eyes and ears can lie to me

You Ain't Much Fun Since I Quit Drinkin'
I used to come home late and not a minute too soon
Barkin' like a dog, howlin' at the moon
You'd be mad as an ol' wet hen
Up all night wonderin' where I'd been
I'd fall down and say come help me honey
You laughed out loud, I guess you thought it was funny
But I sobered up and I got to thinkin'
Girl you ain't much fun since I quit drinkin'
Now I'm paintin' the house and I'm mendin' the fence
I guess I've gone and lost all my good sense
Too much work is hard for your health
I could've died drinkin' now I'm killing myself
And I'm feedin' the dog, sackin' the trash
It's honey do this, honey do that
I sobered up and I got to thinkin'
Girl you ain't much fun since I quit drinkin'
Now I'm fixin' the sink and I'm mowin' the grass
And you've made me a list and I'm bustin' my.... well
All broke down, tail's been draggin'
It's a rough old life up here on the wagon
And I'm feedin' the dog, sackin' the trash
It's honey do this, honey do that
I sobered up and I got to thinkin'
Girl you ain't much fun since I quit drinkin'
Yeah I sobered up and I got to thinkin'
Girl you ain't much fun since I quit drinkin'
