February 2008

Hi All,
This month's WSB club meeting will take place at Jack MacKenzie's home on Friday, February 29. Contact Us for directions.

Jack wrote:
"I bought a bag of caramel vienne grain and about a half bag of aromatic malt. I also picked a few pounds barley flakes. Maybe we can come up with a recipe to use them and I can brew it up for the next meeting. A blind tasting sounds good. I have parking for six or seven without playing musical cars when people leave. And there is ample overflow parking in the church parking lot opposite my driveway entrance."

If you have some suggested recipe(s) lease contact him ASAHP.

Next months' meeting will be on March 20 at Ernie and Marti's above Silverdale to the west. Probably Alan will host in April (north of Poulsbo), on a weekend with a combo meeting/imperial stout tasting. Then May's meeting will be during Big Brew the first Saturday of the month.
An interesting article on blind tasting 25 imperial stouts:

Jim Koch yesterday announced yesterday that they would be sharing their extra hops with small breweries. Here's the story:

Jim Koch sent a big old hops valentine to smaller breweries on Thursday. Ten tons worth.

He told them that Boston Beer, brewer of the Samuel Adams beers, will sell 20,000 pounds of hops that otherwise would not be available to smaller breweries. The company will sell the hops at its cost, which is considerably less than they would bring on the open (or "spot") market.

Koch revealed the offer to Brewers Association members Thursday in a forum for association members, telling them:

"For a couple of months now, we've all been facing the unprecedented hops shortage and it's affected all craft brewers in various ways. The impact is even worse on the small craft brewers - openings delayed, recipes changed, astronomical hops prices being paid and brewers who couldn't make beer.

"So we looked at our own hops supplies at Boston Beer and decided we could share some of our hops with other craft brewers who are struggling to get hops this year."

The brewery will sell 10,000 pounds of East Kent Goldings from Great Britain and 10,000 pounds of Tettnang Tettnanger from small farms in the Tettnang region in Germany. Both are "aroma hops," horribly under appreciated and the kind being dissed by brewers chasing alpha, but at the same time becoming crazily expensive.

Samuel Adams will limit the amount sold to any one brewery in order to assure as many as possible get hops.

"The purpose of doing this is to get some hops to the brewers who really need them. So if you don't really need them, please don't order them," Koch wrote. "And don't order them just because we're making them available at a price way below market. Order them because you need these hops to make your beer. We're not asking questions, so let your conscience be your guide."

This will be explained in the "Hop-Sharing Program" area at the Samuel Adams website, perhaps as early as this afternoon.

For any of those local brewers that might be intersted in this, here's the link to the Hop Sharing Program webpage: http://www.samueladams.com/promotions/HopSharing/Default.aspx

Fish beer created by brewer

Fish Beer

After a couple of post-work pints most of us start to sway just a little.

But now you can blame that 'all-at-sea' feeling on that fact that your beer has been made with shellfish.

Brewer Shepherd Neame has pushed the boat out to make Scallop Stout, a venture it claims is tasty, if unusual.

'There's a hint of smokiness and a slight taste of the sea but no fishiness. I can find no scientific reason for why it works, but it does,' said brewer Stewart Main.

The 3.7 per cent stout, which is creamy like Guinness, is made using traditional methods but with a handful of scallops thrown in for an hour.

Mr Main had the idea after visiting a scallop festival in Rye, East Sussex, which reminded him how the bi-valve is often washed down with a pint.

But it is not the only association the briny has with beer. Finings, a substance derived from fish swim bladders (a sac which helps them float), is used to make ale clearer. The Kent-based brewery also plans a crab and winkle ale.

There's a tear in my beer

'cause I'm cryin' for you,

dear you are on my lonely mind.

Into these last nine beers

I have shed a million tears.

You are on my lonely mind

I'm gonna keep on sittin' here

And then maybe these tears

will leave my eyes.

Last night I walked the floor

and the night before

You are on my lonely mind.

It seems my life is through

and I'm so doggone blue

“What Made Milwaukee Famous Made A Loser Out Of Me”

as performed by Jerry Lee Lewis

songwriter: Glenn Sutton

Its late and she's waiting and I know I should go home

But every time I start to leave they play another song

Then someone buys another round and wherever drinks are free

What's made Milwaukee famous has made a fool out of me

Baby's begged me not to go so many times before

She says love and happiness can't live behind those swinging doors

Nows she's gone and I'm to blame too late I finally see

What's made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me

Babys begged me not to go so many times before

She says love and happiness just can't live behind those swinging doors

Nows she's gone and I'm to blame to late I finally see

What's made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me

What's made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me
