March 2009
Hi All,
This Saturday, March 14, at the Moum's north of Poulsbo we'll have our monthly WSB meeting, combined or surrounded by an imperial stout tasting. The imperial stout tasting starts at noon and the club meeting officially begins at 4, feel free to show up whenever you can and stay as long as you like (or until you're kicked out). Bring whatever homebrews you want to show off, and if you don't have any try to bring imperial stout/porter or their equivalents. There will be some pizza or calzones or some such, but feel free to bring any other snacks or dishes to contribute to the alcohol buffering.
Contact Us for directions.
We'll have some discussion and brainstorming about this year's KCF homebrew competition at 4PM.
If you would like to host a club meeting sometime this year please contact Alan or any club officer soon and we'll try to get it scheduled.
At our latest meeting absentees John Altman and Mark Hood were elected club Prez and Veep, respectively. Vic Keranen Treasurer (though Don Wyatt still maintains our checking account), and Alan Moum and Brad Ginn still maintain their (apparently lifetime) positions as data guys. If you have great ideas for the club and an interest in any of these positions please let us know and nonviolent coups may begin.
Our new Veep Mark Hood's Asian beer report from his recent business trip to Korea and China:
Seoul:
Seoul is pretty much a beer wasteland with the exception of:
1) Ex-Pat bars in Itaewon
2) Platinum brewery in Apgujong
First night there I went to 3 Alley Pub in Itaewon which is the best of these establishments from my extensive research :)
http://www.seoulstyle.com/bars-clubs/three-alley-pub.htm
Chicken wings in 4 heat levels (hint...don't get insane) go well with the Erdinger BrauWeisse on tap in the correct glass. They also have Erdinger Dunkel and Krystal Weisse in bottles. Next was Duvel in the correct glass, although they don't know how to pour. They either pour it normal and foam it all over and laugh about how the beer is wrong, or they know better, and pour it so slow there's barely a centimeter of foam. They will not let you pour it yourself. They also have a decent Kilkenny on tap that seems like it's nitro charged, smooth and creamy and flat and good. Leffe Bruin is also available in bottles there. This is the best place to go for an American by his or herself IMO, as in Korea most places are geared for two or more together. There are no real bars to speak of, and even McDonald's has "sets" of food for two.
Later in the week I visited Platinum brewery with the CTO of my developer.
http://beerme.com/brewery.php?8439
He'd never had a "decent" beer as far as I know, living off of Soju for drinking, and their beers, Hite and OB to have with food. Both are light, 3.6% beers with a lot of rice and little to recommend. Platinum brewery is owned and operated by a real brewer who obviously has a taste for Belgian styles. Their Wit is spiced with Lemon zest, orange, coriander and jasmine, and is pretty good. Not as good as John's or several others from our group, but a good solid Wit. They have a brown ale that tastes a bit young and yeasty, but basically a Newcastle clone. Not bad, but not great. They pilsner is ok, but appeals more to the HITE OB crown, albeit with a higher octane an a bit more hops. The star there though is "Morphine". An 8.7% tripel, that is quite good. It's as good or better than most NW tripels IMHO, but not as good as the best Belgians, or nearly any good Belgian. The cans labeled "Stout" in the convenience stores are actually quite refreshing and
good, with a hint of roastiness to go along with the crisp light malt/rice mix.
Beer is always served with dried squid in Korean, and sometimes jerky and nuts. The squid is perfect with beer, and it's a shame it has a bad wrap here in the states. Slightly salty and usually sweetened a little, and sometimes spiced, it is nearly always served with two small dishes of "dip", one a red mild chili sauce, and the other mayonnaise.
Beijing:
Next off to Beijing. Beijing has two major beer companies, Tsingtao, and Yanjing, each with several different qualities and strengths. Tsingtao in a bottle was as good as I've ever had Tsingtao, with a crisp hoppy finish and a very clean taste. In a can, it was flat and flavorless. Not sure why, but probably different beers altogether.
I thought Yanjing was a waste of time until I found one labeled "Special". It's only 11 degrees plato as opposed to 10 of the regular, but the difference was amazing. It had a maltiness and consistency reminiscent of Budvar, albeit much lighter. Lightly hopped, yet with some real aroma hops. Each beer I saw had government markings telling the quality (I only saw "Good" and "Excellent", the degrees plato, and the ABV class, i.e. >3.6% or >4.2%. There's probably more but I never saw them. They also all listed the ingredients. They were the same on every beer I had. Water, Malt, Rice, and Hops. No yeast listed, and no qualification on what kind of malt, so I imagine it's all barley malt. I was told they have all malt beers, as they do in Korea and Japan, but I never saw them.
They are cheap in stores, and even sold in soda machines for 5RMD (about $.80). In a bar, expect to pay $3-8 depending on where.
Then they took me to a bar that "brewed their own beer"...For a mere $700RMB (slightly over $100) they brought out a "keg" of their "White beer". This was explained to me as one of two types, a White beer and a black beer. I asked for the black beer, but got the white. It was maybe a gallon total. The Keg was larger, but it appeared to be only slightly more than half full. It tasted like one of the old "Mr Beer" kits, with an extracty, yeast, worty flavor, and fairly flat and stale. It was obviously an attempt at a Witbier, but a poor one. Stronger than their normal beer, but it had a soapy taste to go along with the other flaws that made it barely drinkable, but as they got that to impress me, I didn't have the heart to tell them, so I drank a few small glasses. The bar itself was in an incredible spot on a lake in the middle of Beijing lined with bright neon signs. Bars and restaurants all around. The name meant "Back door lake" as it was behind a
palace,
http://www.gluckman.com/BeijingHouHaiLake.html
In Beijing, I suggest exploring more and doing some research up front, or sticking to the bottles, or even their "White Wine" which is actually rice whiskey of 45-50% or even more. Beer doesn't seem to be appreciated much, except as an alternative to tea for drinking with food. BTW, the lunch we had with the bottled beers included duck tongue, jellyfish, and a white fish boiled in a gallon pot of oil with chilies. Not as bad as it sounds. Beijing is "not" easy to find a good bar in for an American on his own. Except for the kind that I didn't want to go to that had the obligatory callers trying to shuffle you in and not taking no for an answer.
Ed. note: The highest rated beer on ratebeer.com for South Korea is a 3.35 for O’ Kims Bräuhaus Helles, and for China it's just a 3.38 Paulaner Brauhaus Hefeweizen (Shanghai).

March Meeting Announcement
The March meeting of the North Olympic Brewer's Guild will be held Sunday, March 22nd at 2pm at the home of Keith Barnett in Sequim. Keith is one of our charter members and lives at 231 Madrona Terrace.
Please note the change from our usual Saturday meeting, but don't miss this opportunity to connect with other homebrewers from throughout the North Olympic Peninsula. Keith will also feature a tutorial on beer tasting, and welcomes everyone to bring a sample of their favorite brew to share.
Our February meeting included a small, but mighty crowd. We had three new members join us who are just starting out with brewing. Rich and Brian shared some of their handiwork, while Ed and Jeff shared some of their insight from a Brewmaster's perspective. Thanks again to Peak's Pub for hosting the event, and for being such a strong supporter of homebrewers throughout the region!
Cheers,
Brian

Dear Washington AHA, Support Your Local Brewery and BA Members:
We are pleased to announce that Senate Bill 5060 was passed unanimously by the Senate on February 27th. Senate Bill 5060 will allow for homemade beer and wine to be transported out of the house for private use as well as use in organized events.

We, along with the Washington Homebrewers Association, ask that you contact the members of the House Commerce and Labor Committee and politely urge them to support Senate Bill 5060 (regarding the transportation of homemade beer and wine). Let them know that it passed on the Senate floor unanimously and is a good stimulus bill for Washington's home brewers and winemakers as well as for our craft beer and wine industries. An attempt to map the best beer areas in the country. In my mind it says more about population densities, the location of megabreweries that win masses of silly medals in the schwag beer categories, and the GABF bias towards Colorado breweries. Still it's kinda fun:

Ry Cooder "One Cat, One Vote, One Beer"
Hey bartender, what you say
I'm gonna get drunk on election day!
Want one glass of bourbon, one glass rye
Come on, set me up, Joe, don't pas me by
My money's alright, but my feets got sore
See, I've been tryin' to vote, now 'bout an hour or more
I tried, but I didn't get nowhere
Joe, you know I just don't think they are doing this voting fair and square
Better make it one cat, one vote, and one beer
Bartender, one cat, one vote, and one beer
See, I went downtown to the votin' room
'Cause I wanted to get my voting done soon
Man said, "Now we're gonna have to do a little checkin' on you"
Come back a little later on and said,
"Well, Buddy, you know your vote just can't go through
Says you've been dead, ten years back. We're sure not gonna take a vote off a, a dead red cat"
"What you say?"
"Step aside now, you're interfering with the election process, that's a crime"
"The crime is you!"
"Well, Buddy, votin' is just something I don't think you're going to do"
One cat, one vote, and one beer
Ain't that a shame
One cat, one vote, and one beer
Bartender!
I'm gonna drink a little gin and some mellow wine
Then I'm gonna try that voting machine out just one more time
'Cause democracy is in our hands, but it's slipping through our fingers just like sand
Now I'm worried for you, sure worried for me, watching the election comin' round on the T.V.
Voting's closed, we already lost the race
Might as well meet me down to Little Joe's Place
Make it one cat, one vote, and one beer
Dog my cats you know
I guess just make it one cat, one vote, and one beer
One cat, and one vote, and one beer
Bartender

Why Aye Man
We had no way of staying afloat
We had to leave on the ferry boat
Economic
refugees
On the run to germany
We had the back of maggie's hand
Times
were tough in geordieland
We got wor tools and working gear
And humped it
all from newcastle to here
Why aye man, why aye, why aye man
Why aye
man, why aye, why aye man
We're the nomad tribes, travelling boys
In
the dust and dirt and the racket and the noise
Drills and hammers, diggers
and picks
Mixing concrete, laying bricks
There's english, irish, scots,
the lot
United nation's what we've got
Brickies, chippies, every
trade
German building, british-made
Why aye man, why aye, why aye
man
Why aye man, why aye, why aye man
Nae more work on maggie's
farm
Hadaway down the autobahn
Mine's a portacabin bed
Or a bunk in a
nissen hut instead
There's plenty deutschmarks here to earn
And
german tarts are wunderschoen
German beer is chemical-free
Germany's

Sometimes i miss my river tyne
But you're my pretty

Tonight we'll drink the old town dry
Keep wor spirit levels

Beer In Mexico
Artist(Band): Kenny Chesney
Starin' out into the wild blue yonder
So many thoughts to sit and ponder
'Bout life and love and lack of
And this emptiness in my heart
Too old to be wild and free still
Too young to be over the hill
Should I try to grow up
But who knows where to start
So I just ...
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Do my best to waste another day
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Let the warm air melt these blues away
Sun comes up and sun sinks down
And I seen 'em both in this tourist town
Up for days in a rage
Just tryin' to search my soul
From the answers and the reasons why
I'm at these crossroads in my life
And I really don't know
Which way to go
So I just ...
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Do my best to waste another day
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Let the warm air melt these blues away
Maybe I'll settle down, get married
Or stay single and stay free
Which road I travel
Is still a mystery to me
So I'll just ...
Sit right here, have another beer in Mexico
Do my best to waste another day
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Let the warm air melt these blues away
Down in Mexico ...
Bruce Springsteen
"BLINDED BY THE LIGHT"
Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder, feelin' kinda older, I tripped the merry-go-round
With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing, the calliope crashed to the ground
Some all-hot half-shot was headin' for the hot spot, snappin' his fingers, clappin' his hands
And some fleshpot mascot was tied into a lover's knot with a whatnot in her hand
And now young Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand
And some bloodshot forget-me-not whispers, "Daddy's within earshot, save the buckshot, turn up the band"
And she was blinded by the light
Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
She got down but she never got tight, but she'll make it alright
Some brimstone baritone anti-cyclone rolling stone preacher from the East
He says, "Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in its funny bone, that's where they expect it least"
And some new-mown chaperone was standin' in the corner all alone, watchin' the young girls dance
And some fresh-sown moonstone was messin' with his frozen zone to remind him of the feeling of romance
Yeah, he was blinded by the light
Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
He got down but he never got tight, but he's gonna make it tonight
Some silicone sister with her manager's mister told me I got what it takes
She said, "I'll turn you on, sonny, to something strong if you play that song with the funky break"
And Go-Cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe to go outside
And little Early-Pearly came by in her curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride
Oh, some hazard from Harvard was skunked on beer, playin' backyard bombardier
Yes, and Scotland Yard was trying hard, they sent some dude with a calling card, he said, "Do what you like, but don't do it here"
Well, I jumped up, turned around, spit in the air, fell on the ground and asked him which was the way back home
He said, "Take a right at the light, keep goin' straight until night, and then, boy, you're on your own"
And now in Zanzibar, a shootin' star was ridin' in a side car, hummin' a lunar tune
Yes, and the avatar said, "Blow the bar but first remove the cookie jar, we're gonna teach those boys to laugh too soon"
And some kidnapped handicap was complainin' that he caught the clap from some mousetrap he bought last night
Well, I unsnapped his skull cap and between his ears I saw a gap but figured he'd be all right
He was just blinded by the light
Cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night
Blinded by the light
Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun
Oh, but Mama, that's where the fun is
I was blinded
I was blinded
I was blinded
Bruce Springsteen
"Jungleland"
The Rangers had a homecoming
In Harlem late last night
And the Magic Rat drove his sleek machine
Over the Jersey state line
Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain
The Rat pulls into town, rolls up his pants
Together they take a stab at romance
And disappear down Flamingo Lane
Well, the Maximum Lawmen run down Flamingo
Chasing the Rat and the barefoot girl
And the kids 'round there live just like shadows
Always quiet, holding hands
From the churches to the jails
Tonight all is silence in the world
As we take our stand
Down in Jungleland
The midnight gang's assembled
And picked a rendezvous for the night
They'll meet 'neath that giant Exxon sign
That brings this fair city light
Man, there's an opera out on the Turnpike
There's a ballet being fought out in the alley
Until the local cops, Cherry-Tops, rips this holy night
The street's alive as secret debts are paid
Contacts made, they vanish unseen
Kids flash guitars just like switchblades
Hustling for the record machine
The hungry and the hunted
Explode into rock 'n' roll bands
That face off against each other out in the street
Down in Jungleland
In the parking lot the visionaries dress in the latest rage
Inside the backstreet girls are dancing to the records that the DJ plays
Lonely-hearted lovers struggle in dark corners
Desperate as the night moves on
Just one look and a whisper, and they're gone
Beneath the city, two hearts beat
Soul engines running through a night so tender
In a bedroom locked in whispers
Of soft refusal and then surrender
In the tunnels uptown, the Rat's own dream guns him down
As shots echo down them hallways in the night
No one watches when the ambulance pulls away
Or as the girl shuts out the bedroom light
Outside the street's on fire in a real death waltz
Between what's flesh and what's fantasy
And the poets down here don't write nothing at all
They just stand back and let it all be
And in the quick of a knife, they reach for their moment
And try to make an honest stand
But they wind up wounded, not even dead
Tonight in Jungleland

Momma's Night Out
Well you never buy me flowers
Hey, did you hear what I said
I'll be dancing barefoot
while you put the kids
to bed
Take a good look darlin
At the smile on my face
It's been a long hard week
and I'm ready to play
Now take a big whiff honey
Of my sweet perfume
Well, it's the only
thing left of me left in
this room
[CHORUS]
Cause' I'm alright now
Got a little money
And the gas taks full
Yeah, I'm alright now
Me and the girls in the Coupe DeVille
Yeah, I'm alright
Daddy's doin dishes
Cause it's momma'a night out
Well you can be a couch potatoe
Drink your beer and eat some chips
While I put a little
Wet-N-Wild on my lips
So take a picture of me honey
Cause I look so fine
You got yours and I got mine

Meat Loaf "Dead Ringer for Love"
w/Cher
Every night I grab some money and I go down to the bar
I got my buddies and a beer, I got a dream, I need a car
You got me begging on my knees, c'mon and throw the dog a bone
A man he doesn't live by rock 'n roll and brew alone
Baby baby, baby baby
Chorus: [
Rock 'n roll and brew, rock 'n roll and brew
They don't mean a thing when I compare 'em next to you
Rock 'n roll and brew, rock 'n roll and brew
I know that you and I oh we got better things to do
I don't know who you are or what you do, or
where you go when you're not around
I don't know anything about you baby, but you're everything I'm dreaming of
I don't know who you are, but you're a real dead ringer for love
A real dead ringer for love
(girl:) Ever since I can remember you been hanging 'round this joint
You been trying to look away but now you finally got the point
I don't have to know your name and I won't tell you what to do
But a girl - she doesn't live by only rock 'n roll and brew
Baby baby, baby baby - chorus
You got the kind of legs that do more than walk
(girl:) I don't have to listen to your whimpering talk
(boy:) Listen you got the kind of eyes that do more than see
(girl:) You got a lotta nerve to come on to me
(boy:) You got the kind of lips that do more than drink
(girl:) You got the kind of mind that does less than think
But since I'm feeling kinda lonely and my defenses are low
Why don't you give it a shot and get it ready to go
I'm looking for anonymous and fleeting satisfaction
And I want to tell my daddy I'll be missing in action
Ever since I can remember I've been hanging 'round this joint
My daddy never noticed, now he'll finally get the point
(boy:) You got me beggin' on my knees, c'mon and throw the dog a bone
A man he doesn't live by rock 'n roll and brew alone
Baby baby - chorus
Dead ringer for love
Dead ringer for love - dead ringer (repeats 12x)

Everything Louder Than Everything Else
Wasted youth! Wasted youth! I know that I will
never be politically correct And I don't give a
damn about my lack of etiquette As far as I'm
concerned, the world could still be flat And if
the thrill is gone, then it's time to take it back
If the thrill is gone, then it's time to take it
back Who am I? Why am I here? Forget the
questions, someone gimme another beer What's the
meaning of life, what's the meaning of it all? You
gotta learn to dance before you learn to crawl You
gotta learn to dance before you learn to crawl So
sign up all you raw recruits, throw away those
designer suits You got your weapons cocked, your
targets in your sights There's a party raging
somewhere in the world You gotta serve your
country, gotta service your girl You're all
enlisted in the armies of the night And I ain't in
it for the power, and I ain't in it for the health
I ain't in it for the glory of anything at all And
I sure ain't in it for the wealth But I'm in it
till it's over and I just can't stop If you wanna
get it done, you gotta do it yourself And I like
my music like I like my life Everything louder
than everything else, everything louder than
everything else Everything louder than everything
else, everything louder than everything else
Everything louder than everything else, everything
louder than everything else Wasted youth! Wasted
youth! Wasted youth! Wasted youth! They got a file
on me and it's a mile long And they say that they
got all of the proof That I'm just another case of
arrested development And just another wasted youth
They say that I'm in need of some radical
discipline They say I gotta face the truth That
I'm just another case of arrested development And
just another wasted youth They say I'm wild and
I'm reckless, I should be acting my age I'm an
impressionable child in a tumultuous world And
they say I'm at a difficult stage But it seems to
me to the contrary Of all the crap they're going
to put on the page That a wasted youth is better
by far than a wise and productive old age A wasted
youth is better by far than a wise and productive
old age A wasted youth is better by far than a
wise and productive old age A wasted youth is
better by far than a wise and productive old age A
wasted youth is better by far than a wise and
productive old age A wasted youth is better by far
than a wise and productive old age If you want my
views of history then there's something you should
know The three men I admire most are Curly, Larry
and Mo! If you don't worry 'bout the future,
sooner or later it's the past And if they say the
thrill is gone, then it's time to take it back If
the thrill is gone, then it's time to take it back
So sign up all you raw recruits, throw away all
those two-bit suits You got your weapons cocked,
your targets in your sights There's a party raging
somewhere in the world You gotta serve your
country, gotta service your girl You're all
inducted in the armies of the night And I ain't in
it for the power, and I ain't in it for the health
I ain't in it for the glory of anything at all And
I sure ain't in it for the wealth But I'm in it
till it's over and I just can't stop If you wanna
get it done, you gotta fight for yourself And I
like my music like I like my life Everything
louder than everything else (repeats out)

"The Ragpicker's Dream"
When Jack Frost came for Christmas
With a brass monkey date
The rail-king and the scarecrow
Hopped a Florida freight
And they blew on their paper cups
And stared through the steam
Then they drank half a bottle
Of Ragpicker's Dream where
The whiskey keeps following
Cold pitchers of beer
Me and my associate
Like the clientele here get
The onions and the 'taters
Rib-eyes on the grill
Toothpicks and luckies
And a coffee refill as
The rail-king lay rocking
He was leaving the ground
Then he was flying like Santa Claus
Over the town where
He came to the window
Of a house by a stream
It was a family Christmas
In the Ragpicker's Dream there
Were kids at the table
All aglow in the light
Music in the wintertime
Sure carries at night there
Was turkey and gravy
Pie and ice cream
And gifts for each and everyone
In the Ragpicker's Dream where
The red-eye keeps tumbling
In our glasses of beer
Me and my associate
Like the service in here there's
A ten for your trouble
You have beautiful hair
Make the last one two doubles
It's a cold one out there where
The scarecrow and the rail-king
Have started to dance
But a nightstick and a billyclub
Won't give peace a chance here
I think they went thataways
Your song and dance team
Heading home for the holidays
With the Ragpicker's Dream on
His knees like a fighter
The rail-riding king
Like a sack of potatoes
Like a bull in the ring where
The scarecrow falls over
With a tear in the seam
Home for the rover
In the Ragpicker's Dream where
The red-eye keeps tumbling
Like tears in our beer
Me and my associate
Like the ambience here
Where they cornered two castaways
In a white flashlight beam
Merry Christmas and happy days
In the Ragpicker's Dream

Somebody's gotta crack
A whip around here
Who's minding the store?
Shake it up sell some beer
What's your
Money maker for?
Pay day
We're packin' 'em in
Six-gun Annie
And Buffalo Jill
But who's to say
They'll be back again
For a refill?
Honey, you know the drill
Ain't no left turn
Down sleepy time street
You gotta be fast
But you gotta stay loose
Thinking
On your feet
Slick as grass
Through a goose
We gotta
Rationalise
The payroll
Is giving me chills
You and me's
Getting organised
It's kill or be killed
Honey, you know the drill
Well they can all look down
On sucker row
But they all forget
The tallest trees
From acorns grow
Though they ain't yet
I never look down
On a sucker stake
They all pay the bills
I never gave a sucker
An even break
And I never will
A beautiful vision
Keeps coming to me
I see
A miracle mile
Flying in
For free
Service
With a smile
High rollers
Fancy hotels
Big time singers
Topping the bill
You gotta have a feel
For the stuff that sells
Call it a skill
Honey, you know the drill
Somebody's gotta crack
A whip around here
Who's
Minding the store?
Shake it up
Sell some beer
Money walking
Through the door
Annie's arriving
At a dangerous age
Don't you
Go getting ill
Get another woman
Up in the cage
Who ain't over the hill
Honey, you know the drill

Industrial Disease
Warning lights are flashing down at quality control
Somebody threw a spanner and they threw him in the hole
There’s rumours in the loading bay and anger in the town
Somebody blew the whistle and the walls came down
There’s a meeting in the boardroom they’re trying to trace the smell
There’s leaking in the washroom there’s a sneak in personnel
Somewhere in the corridors someone was heard to sneeze
’goodness me could it be industrial disease? ’
The caretaker was crucified for sleeping at his post
They’re refusing to be pacified it’s him they blame the most
The watchdog’s got rabies the foreman’s got the fleas
And everyone’s concerned about industrial disease
There’s panic on the switchboard tongues are ties in knots
Some come out in sympathy some come out in spots
Some blame the management some the employees
And everybody knows it’s the industrial disease
The work force is disgusted downs tools and walks
Innocence is injured experience just talks
Everyone seeks damages and everyone agrees
That these are ’classic symptoms of a monetary squeeze’
On itv and bbc they talk about the curse
Philosophy is useless theology is worse
History boils over there’s an economics freeze
Sociologists invent words that mean ’industrial disease’
Doctor parkinson declared ’i’m not surprised to see you here
You’ve got smokers cough from smoking brewer’s droop from drinking beer
I don’t know how you came to get the bette davis knees
But worst of all young man you’ve got industrial disease’
He wrote me a prescription he said ’you are depressed
But I’m glad you came to see me to get this off your chest
Come back and see me later - next patient please
Send in another victim of industrial disease’
I go down to speaker’s corner I’m thunderstruck
They got free speech, tourists, police in trucks
Two men say they’re jesus one of them must be wrong
There’s a protest singer singing a protest song - he says
’they wanna have a war so they can keep us on our knees
They wanna have a war so they can keep their factories
They wanna have a war to stop us buying japanese
They wanna have a war to stop industrial disease
They’re pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind
They wanna sap you energy incarcerate your mind
They give you rule brittania, gassy beer, page three
Two weeks in espana and sunday striptease’
Meanwhile the first jesus says ’i’d cure it soon
Abolish monday mornings and friday afternoons’
The other one’s out on hunger strike he’s dying by degrees
How come jesus gets industrial disease

Mama Mercy
I was catching up
with my baby
When I saw you coming
down the road
I thought
Mama Mercy
Don't let him get me
I got a happy life at home
But as sure as sure is
you passed me
Of course I had to look
and as I turned my head
I knew right then
I was gonna have
to do it again
And I was singing
Mercy
Mercy mama
Don't you dare let it get me
I love the one I love
And if I stray
It's gonna hurt
I was drinking beer
with a close friend
When I saw you
walking in the room
I thought
Mercy me
I can't keep a running
You're gonna get me, oooh
As wrong as this is
You touched me
Of course you had me hooked
And as I kissed your lips
I knew right then
I was gonna have
to do it again
And I was singing
Mercy
Mercy mama
Don't you dare let it get me
I love the one I love
And if I stray
It's gonna hurt
I was sitting down
with my sweetheart
Making out I was sincere
I thought
Mercy me
I can't keep a lying
I got to get the air clear
as long as you stay with me
Forget the whole affair
I promise you
I'll be true
I'm never gonna do it again
And I was singing
Mercy
Mercy mama
Don't you dare let it get me
I love the one I love
And if I stray
It's gonna hurt

"Friends"
It's been so long
Since I've seen you
My old friend
I remember your eyes
How they would shine
Those crazy times
When you and I
Fooled around
I remember the time
You fell in love
Didn't know how
To say goodbye
To your baby
And you made me take
The goodbye note
Around
And that little girl
She cried and cried
And she asked me if
I knew exactly why
You'd gone
I told a like
I said you felt
She'd be much happier
With someone else
But then you'd do
The same for me
Remember when
We stayed out late
We'd cause a fight
But we would never stay
To the end
I loved you then
I love you still
You know I think
I always will
You're a good friend
A good friend
To me
Who was it
Who came for me when I was
Stranded in the bad man's land
Who was it
Who put up bail for me when I was
So desperate to get out
Who believed with me
That I was not guilty
Who gave me beer when I was thirsty
And who gave me twenty-five dollars to hold

Borderstone
The night is as black as the coal dust on the tracks
Up to the east day is dawning
From time to time I get women on my mind
I'm a son of a gun
Borderstone, Borderstone gonna cross your line tonight
Borderstone, pretty little town, gonna make my bed tonight
The train that I'm on is a hundred boxcars long
So I don't sleep through to the morning
That's some chilly wind in this gondola I'm in
I wish I had a glass of beer
Borderstone, Borderstone gonna cross your line tonight
Borderstone, pretty little town, gonna make my bed tonight
Borderstone, Borderstone gonna cross your line tonight
Borderstone, pretty little town, gonna make my bed tonight
The boardinghouse reach is a thing no school can teach you
I confess I've been outfumbled
And the sound of the beans boiling through the evergreens
Sure do please a hungry man
Borderstone, Borderstone gonna cross your line tonight
Borderstone, pretty little town, gonna make my bed tonight
Borderstone, Borderstone gonna cross your line tonight
Borderstone, pretty little town, gonna make my bed tonight
The sound of the wheels rebounds across the fields
I'm a name with no number
And so I guess I'd be drifting more or less
But still it's not meant to be
Borderstone, Borderstone gonna cross your line tonight
Borderstone, pretty little town, gonna make my bed tonight
Borderstone, Borderstone gonna cross your line tonight
Borderstone, pretty little town, gonna make my bed tonight
Borderstone, Borderstone gonna cross your line tonight
Borderstone, pretty little town, gonna make my bed tonight

This is the longest beer of the night and in the East I think I see some light,
And pretty soon I know the sun will shine and I know a bar that opens promptly at nine?at nine.
I guess two six-packs wasn't enough 'cause right about now the goin' really gets rough
And some early bird is happy callin' his mate and I wish I knew a bar that opened promptly at eight.
Maybe I was just a fool thinkin' I could drown you outa my mind but the longest part of the day is just before nine.
I can see the dew that's settlin' onto the ground and if I'm not careful your mem'ry's gonna come 'round
And that's the reason I just gotta stay tight, so I'm just nursin' the longest beer of the night.
Yeah, I'm nursin' the longest beer of the night.

The Greeks Don't Want no Freaks
There was beer all over the dance floor
and the band was playin' rhythm and blues
You got down and did the gator, and half
an hour later, you were barfin' all over your
Girlfriend's shoes.
But the Greeks don't want no freaks.
The Greeks don't want no freaks
Just put a little smile on them rosy
cheeks,
'Cause the Greeks don't want no freaks.
(GATOR!!)
She was the pride and the passion of Dixie
She did exactly what her daddy had planned.
She was perfect little sister until somebody missed
her and they found her in the bushes with
the boys in the band
But the Greeks don't want no freaks
The Greeks don't want no freaks
So put a great big smile on them rosy cheeks,
'Cause the Greeks don't want no freaks
No, the Greeks don't want no freaks
Said, the Greeks don't want no freaks
Just put that monster smile on them rosy cheeks
'Cause the Greeks don't want no freaks
No, the Greeks don't want no freaks,
Ahh...

"God Made Beer"
God made the sun so we could see
And the air for us to breathe
He came up with gravity to ground us here
He made that great big clear blue sky
For those eagles' wings to fly
Yeah but men like me are why
God made beer
Yeah the working man and a cold can
just go together
If your heart's brwaking or you're hell raising
Nothing works better
In a crowded bar or wrapped in the arms
of your honey or your favourite lazy-boy chair
Yeah men like me are why god made beer
It'll wash that pizza back, goes great with cutting grass
18 holes, small mouth bass and bending ears
It's got me out of heartbroke binds
And in the doghouse at times
Yeah men like me are why
God made beer
Yeah the working man and a cold can
just go together
If your heart's breaking or you're hell raising
Nothing works better
In a crowded bar or wrapped in the arms
of your honey or your favourite lazy-boy chair
Yeah men like me are why god made beer
White collars drink their wine and champagne
Sip martinis from a glass
Buts it's crystal clear God made beer
For ass-kicking hell-raisin' hard-livin', love-makin'
hard working class man just like me

At the Dolphin the beer flowed like wine.
And people were drinking.
Over there, there were lives on the line,
But not at the Dolphin
Across the ocean the world was at war
And bullets were flying.
In the air there's plane headed for
The heart of the Dolphin.
It's after the Dolphin.
They were laughing and drinking and carrying on
and then in the blink of an eye they were gone, gone, gone.
So was the Dolphin, so was the Dolphin, gone was the Dolphin.
What will become of us all? Who know the story?
Will we witness the final fall of the hope and the glory?
Blinded by honor they fought eye to eye
Now men without faces rain fire from the sky.
When you kill from a distance is anyone to blame?
And the armies of warfare will never be the same again.
After the Dolphin, after the Dolphin, after the Dolphin.

To Beat The Devil
It was winter time in Nashville down on Music City Row
I was lookin' for a place to get myself out of the cold
To warm the frozen feelin' that was eatin' at my soul
And keep the chilly winds off my guitar
My thirsty wanted whiskey and my hunger needed beans
But I guess it'd been a month of payday since I heard that eagle scream
So with a stomach full of empty and a pocket full of dreams
I left my pride and stepped inside a bar
Actually I guess you'd call it a tavern
Cigarette smoke to the ceiling sawdust on the floor friendly shadows
I saw that there was just an old man sittin' at the bar
In the mirror I could see him checkin' me and my guitar
He said come up here boy show us what you are I said I'm dry he bought me a beer
He nodded at my guitar said it's a tough life ain't it I just looked at him
And he said you ain't makin' any money are you I said you been readin' my mail
He just smiled and said let me see that guitar
I got somethin' you oughta hear then he laid it on me
If you waste your time a talkin' to the people who don't listen
To the things that you are sayin' who do you thinks gonna hear
And if you should die explainin' how the thing they complain about
Or the things they could be changing who do you thinks gonna care
There were lots of other singers in the world turned deaf and blind
Who were crucified for what they tried to show
Now their voices have been scattered by the swirling winds of time
And the truth remains that no one wants to know
Well the old man was a stranger but I'd've heard his song before
Back when failure had me locked out on the wrong side of the door
No one stood behind me but my shadow on the floor
And lonesome was more than a state of mind
You see the devil haunts a hungry man
And if you don't wanna join him well he's gotta figure out someway to beat him
And I ain't sayin' I beat the devil but I drink his beer for nothin'
And then I stole his song
You can still hear me singin' to the people who don't listen
To the things that I am sayin' prayin' someone's gonna hear
And I guess I'll die explaining how the things that they complain about
Are things they could be changin' hopin' someone's gonna care
I was born to be a singer and I'm bound to die the same
But I've got to feed this hunger in my soul
If I never have a nickel I won't even die in shame
Cause I don't believe that no one wants to know

Out of Jail
I sat at a bar having a beer
Trying to hold down the stool
When a stranger walked in stood there beside me
And plopped down there like a fool.
He started drinking then he started talking
About things that were wrong in his life
The more that I heard the more I believed
The thing that was wrong was his wife.
You talk about beauty when we first met
She was all a man could desire
Talk about love one night with her
Would set your very soul on fire.
But loves little flame is out of control
About three feet high from behind
Ever since we've been married well, I've come to believe
That love's for the dumb and the blind.
'Cause you talk about ugly when she gets mad
She goes from Jekill to Hyde
She grits her teeth and her eyes roll back
And pivot from side to side.
She completely rewrites the whole English language
Descriptive four lettered and loud
Now I can't out think her but I can sure out drink her
And that's what I'm doing here now.
I've spent seven years with the wrong woman
Seven and going on eight
She spent seven years naggin' and eatin'
I'm overwrought and she's overweight.
If I try leavin' she has me arrested
And takes her own sweet time gettin' me out
If she ain't number one she's in the top two
Of things that I could live without.
Men commit murder and all kinds of mayhem
In a few years they're back on the streets
Highway robbery and white collar crime
And they laugh at the system they beat.
Sometimes I'm tempted sometimes I'm ashamed
Of the things that the law will allow
I could have killed her when I first met her
And I'd have been out of jail by now.
I could have killed her when we first met
And I've have been out of jail by now...
The Ballad of Forty Dollars
performed by
Tom T. Hall
or The Highwaymen (Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson)
Verse 1:
(Waylon)
The man that preached the funeral said it really was a simple way to die He laid down to rest one afternoon and never opened up his eyes
They hired me and Fred and Joe to dig the grave and carry up some chairs It took us seven hours and I guess we must have drunk a case of beer
Verse 2:
(Johnny)
I guess I ought to go and watch them put him down but I don't own a suit And anyway when they start talkin' about the fire in hell I get spooked
So let's just sit here in the truck and act like we don't know him when they pass Anyway, when they're all through we got to go to work and mow the grass
Verse 3:
(Waylon then Johnny)
Here they come and who's that riding in that big old shiney limousine Look at all that chrome I do believe that that's the sharpest thing I've seen
That must belong to his rich uncle someone said he owned a big old farm When they get parked let's mosey down and look it over that won't do no harm
Verse 4:
(Waylon then Johnny)
That must be the widow in the car and won't you take a look at that That sure is a pretty dress you know some women do look good in black
He's not even in the ground and they tell me his truck is up for sale They say she took it pretty hard but you can't tell too much behind a veil
Verse 5:
(Waylon then Johnny)
Listen ain't that pretty when a bugler plays a military taps I think when you were in the war they always hide and play a song like that
Well here we are and there he goes and I guess that you might call it our bad luck I hope he rests in peace but the trouble is the fellow owes us forty bucks

Last Cowboy Song
This is the last cowboy song the end of a hundred year waltz
The music is sad as they`re singing along another piece of America`s lost
He rides a feed lot and clerks in a market
On weekends selling tobacco and beer
His days`re spent surrounded by fences
But he`ll dream tonight of when fences weren`t here
The Old Chisholm Trail is covered by concrete
They drive `em to market in fifty foot rigs
They blow by his market never slowing to reason
Like living and dying was all he did
This is the last cowboy song...
This is the last cowboy song...
This is the last cowboy song

I Take My Comfort In You
(Wayland Holyfield - Guy Clark)
I don't drink champaign in crystal glasses
I don't sowed my beans in a silver pot
You won't catch me climb to the social classes
I don't spend money that I ain't got.
I don't waste my time with yesterday's troubles
I just try to do the job and hang
I ain't delegate that I ain't sudden
But I do the best I can.
I drink my beer from the bottle
I take my friends at their works, yes I do
I lived my life like I find it every morning
And I take my comfort in you, I take my comfort in you.
I don't put much stop in public companion
I take it all with the gravy zone
I make mistakes like any human being
So I got no caught go fine and bought.
I take my troubles to the Lord on Sunday
I take my blues to the honky tonk
You take my breath away way you hold me
What is could poor boy want.
I drink my beer from the bottle
I take my friends at their works, yes I do
I lived my life like I find it every morning
And I take my comfort in you, I take my comfort in you.
If You See Me Getting Smaller
Artist(Band): Waylon Jennings
Willie we've been constant companions in all the light and shade
We have spent a million dollars to find out what we made
We have made the maidens marvel at the things we do and say
Down down and out brother up up and away
If you see me gettin' smaller I'm leavin' don't be grieving
Just got to get away from here
If you see me gettin' smaller don't worry I'm in no hurry I've got the right to disappear
God bless old Philadelphia they were standing in the rain
Out in front of the Main Point, a wet and lonely train
Who knows who they came to see a mad man full of beer
A four piece band and a charter bus my border-line career
If you see me gettin' smaller...
Casey's Last Ride
Kris Kristofferson
Casey joins the hollow sound
Of silent people walkin` down
The stairway to the subway
In the shadows down below.
Following their footsteps
Through the neon darkened corridors
Of silent desperation
Never speaking to a soul.
The poison air he`s breathing
Has the dirty smell of dyin`
`Cause it`s never seen the sunshine
And it`s never felt the rain.
Casey minds the arrows
And ignores the fatal echoes
Of the clicking of the turn stops
And the rattle of his chains.
Oh, she said, Casey it`s been
So long since I`ve seen you
Here she said just a kiss
To make a body smile.
See she said I`ve put on
New stocking just to please you
Lord, she said. Casey
Can you only stay a while?
--- Instrumental section ---
Casey leaves the underground
And stops inside the Golden Crown
For something wet
To wipe away the chill that`s in his bones.
Seeing his reflection
In the lives of all the lonely men
Who reach for anything they can
To keep from goin` home.
Standing in the corner
Casey drinks his final bitter
Never glancing in the mirror
At the people passing by.
Then he stumbles as he`s leavin`
And he wonders if the reason
Is the beer that`s in his belly
Or the tear that`s in his eye.
Oh, she said, I suppose
You seldom think about me
Now she said, now
That you`ve a family of your own.
Still she said it`s
So blessed good to feel your body
Lord, she said, Casey
It`s a shame to be alone. hmm...

Sunday Morning Coming Down
Well, I woke up Sunday mornin' with no way
To hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for desert.
Then I fumbled through my closet to my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
And I shaved my face and combed my hair
Stumbled down the stair to meet the day.
Well, I'd smoke my mind the night before
With cigarettes and songs that I'd been picking
But I lit my first and watched the small kid
Cussing the can that he was kicking.
Then I crossed the empty street and caught
The Sunday smell of someone frying chicken
And it took me back to somethin'
That I'd lost somehow, somewhere along the way.
On the Sunday morning sidewalk
Wishing Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing sure to dying
Half as lonesome as the sound
On the sleeping city sidewalk
And Sunday morning coming down.
In the park I saw a daddy
With the laughin' little girl that he was swinging
Then I stopped beside a Sunday school
Listened to the songs they were singing.
I headed back for home and somewhere far away
A lonely bell was ringing
And it echoed through the canyons
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.
On the Sunday morning sidewalk
Wishing Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
Makes a body feel alone...

Best Of All Possible Worlds
I was runnin' through the summer rain tryin' to catch the evenin' train
And kill that old familiar pain weevin' through my tangled brain
When I tipped my bottle back I smacked into a cop I didn't see
That policeman said Mr Cool if you're ain't drunk then you're a fool
I said if that's against the law tell me why I never saw
A man locked in that jail of yours who wadn't just as lowdown poor as me
Well that was when someone turned out the lights
And I wound up in jail to spend the night
And dream of all the wine and lonely girls in this best of all possible worlds
Well I woke up next morning feelin' like my head was gone
And like my thick old tongue was lickin' somethin' sick and wrong
And I told that man I'd sell my soul if somethin' wet and cold is that old cell
That kindly jailer grinned at me all eaten up with sympathy
Then bought himself another beer and came and whispered in my ear
That booze was just a dime a bottle boy you couldn't even buy the smell
I said I knew there was somethin' I liked about this town
But it takes more than that to bring me down down down
Cause there's still a lot of wine and lonely girls in this best of all possible worlds
Well they finally came and told me they was a gonna set me free
And I'd be leavin' town if I knew what was good for me
I said it's nice to learn that everybody's so concerned about my health
I said I won't be leavin' no more quicker than I can
Cause I've enjoyed about this much of this as I can stand
And I don't need this town of yours more than I've never needed nothing else
Cause there's still a lotta drinks that I ain't drunk
Lots of pretty thoughts that I ain't thought oh yeah
Lord there's still so many lonely girls in this best of all possible worlds

The Silver Tongued Devil and I
I took myself down to the Tally Ho Tavern
To buy me a bottle of beer
I sat me down by a tender young maiden
Whose eyes were as soft as her hair
And as I was searching from bottle to bottle
For something un-foolish to say
That silver tounged devil just slipped from the shadows
And smilingly stole her away
chorus:
I said Hey, little girl don't you know he's the devil
He's everything that I ain't
Hiding intentions of evil under the smile of a saint
All he's good for is getting in trouble
And shifting his share of the blame
And some people swear he's my double
And some even say we're the same
But the silver-tounged devil's got nothing to lose
And I'll only live 'till I die
We take our own chances and pay our own dues
The silver tounged devil and I
Like all the fair maidens who've laid down beside him
She knew in her heart that he lied
But nothing that I could have said could have saved her
No matter how hard that she tried
'Cause she'll offer her charms to the darkness and danger
Of something that she's never known
And open her arms at the smile of a stranger
Who'll love her and leave her alone
And (you know) he's the devil ...

Slouching Toward The Millenium
It's time for truth the barker said and poured his self a beer
Oh yeah forsooth said Ben the Geek but who'll be left to hear
They've driven off the fools and saints and now they've stole the show
It's all a bloody circus mates and clowns are in control
If that's the truth said Marzipan the Midget from the floor
I know there won't be no demand for Midgets anymore
We used to be a novelty by simply being small
But next to them unholy men now Tiny Tim looks tall
And it's harder to matter at all when it's all comin' down (and it's all comin' down)
You've still got your duty to choose how you live or you die (that's just the way it is)
So many warnings to turn this old rascal around
We better heed 'em while we got the freedom to try
[ harmonica ]
From the bombin' over Baghdad to the burnin' down at Waco
In the television courtroom of our trials we can see
If yow want to kill your parents or cut off somebody's business
All you got to do is make them hate the victim and you're free
Like Manuel Noriega Saddam Hussein David Koresh
And it's harder to matter...
We better heed 'em while we got the freedom to try
Sunny Afternoon
The Kinks
The tax man's taken all my dough
And left me in my stately home
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
And I can't sail my yacht
He's taken everything I've got
All I've got's this sunny afternoon
Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze
I got a big fat momma tryin' to break me
And I love to live so pleasantly
Life this life of luxury, lazing on a sunny afternoon
In the summertime, in the summertime
In the summertime
My girlfriend's run off with my car
And gone back to her ma and pa
Telling tales of drunkenness and cruelty
Now I'm sitting here
Sipping at my ice cold beer
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
Help me, help me, help me sail away
Well, give me two good reasons why I ought to stay
'Cause I love to live so pleasantly
Life this life of luxury, lazing on a sunny afternoon
In the summertime, in the summertime
In the summertime
Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze
I've got a big fat momma tryin' to break me
And I love to live so pleasantly
Life this life of luxury, lazing on a sunny afternoon
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime
In the summertime
