June 2009

Hi All,
This month's meeting will be held at the Elves' home on Liberty Bay on Friday, June 19, 7PMish. I'm sure Darryl will fire up the grill so bring grillables in addition to your homebrew or any commercial brew you'd like to show off. Andrea loves fruity lambics, so if you've got 'em or if you can get 'em, bring those. They're great on a sunny day overlooking the bay.

Contact Us for directions.

Future meeting hosts (tentative):
July-The Riggs or Gwaltneys
August-The Woods
September-The Dawsons

Let us know if you're interested in hosting a meeting.

From the North Olympic Brewers Guild newsletter (at our meeting let's talk about carpooling up there):
June Meeting Announcement

The June meeting of the North Olympic Brewers Guild will be held at 2pm on Saturday, June 20th, at Water Street Brewing in Port Townsend. This will be our first Port Townsend meeting, and a great opportunity to discover the great beers of Water Street Brewing. They'll have their own creations on tap, and will also feature a full menu of appetizers and afternoon edibles.

The North Olympic Brewers Guild would like to invite all homebrewers, brewmasters and beer enthusiasts to come to our June meeting. Be sure to bring a friend, and a sample of your favorite homebrew, and also check out the Brewer's Exchange to connect with other club members who are carpooling to the meeting.

Hope to see you all there!

A New Brewery On The Peninsula!
The rumors have been confirmed about the newest microbrewery right here in our own backyard. The Harbinger Brewery recently officially opened up shop at their location at 2358 Highway 101, just West of Port Angeles. The brewery hosted an open house event during Memorial Day weekend, with Brewmaster Steve Corcoran showing off his brewing equipment. Also featured was the newly released Endo IPA.

I had the opportunity to sample both the Endo IPA and Harbinger’s Stout. Both were a tasty treat, and hint at some of the many great things to come from the Harbinger Brewery. Be sure to stop by and try some of their beer and the Harbinger Winery’s award winning wines soon. The North Olympic Brewers would like to extend a celebratory prost to Steve, Sara, Tammi and staff for their success in opening the new brewery, and pledge to help support their continuing growth as only this group of beer zealots can. Cheers!

What is new on Tap at Silver City? (from their newsletter)

Whoop Pass Double I.P.A. IT'S BACK!!
Without a doubt, the boldest and hoppiest mother of a brew Silver City has ever created, with over 50lbs of Washington State Cascade and Columbus hops in each batch.
Welcome to hop country! 9% ABV

Deluxe Malt Liquor
History never tasted so good!
This golden lager is a tribute to Kitsap's first brewery; Silver Springs Brewery, built in Port Orchard in 1933. As an authentic representation of beers of the time, Deluxe Malt Liquor is made with a percentage of flaked corn. The result is a smooth, full flavored, light bodied lager with a pleasant, sweet corn character in flavor and aroma. Enjoy the taste of Kitsap County the way your Grandpa might have. Don't ask for ordinary beer. Make it Deluxe! 6% ABV

Panther Lake Porter (Once Again a Year Round Brew!)
This favorite is brewed with chocolate, black and brown malts for a smooth chocolate like flavor that differentiates it from a stout. (Stouts are more burnt/espresso-like) We used Amarillo hops for a more floral NW character for this particular batch of Panther Lake Porter. 6% ABV

Big Daddy's ESB (really low)
A NW Classic....British malt and Northwest hops from Yakima, Washington combine to create a perfect balance of body and bitterness. The fresh, hoppy nose is supported by pleasing fruit undertones. As you taste, a hint of sweetness gives way to pleasing hop bitterness that leaves you wanting more. ABV 6.0%

Hops alert-
Most of the hop crisis is winding down but there have been serious issues with Hallertauer in New Zealand, Germany, and in the Czech Republic. If you plan on using those you might want to stock up.

http://siba.co.uk/2009/05/hail-storms-hit-germany/
Hail Storms Hit Germany
Charles Faram has received several reports from Germany concerning severe hail storms and gale force winds in the hop growing areas of Tettnang and Hallertau.

The storms hit during the evening of the 26th May and seem to have spread south and east as the night progressed. There are unconfirmed reports that some of the Czech acreage may also have been damaged. Initial estimates vary but from the figures reported below it can be seen that the acreage affected is quite significant.

In the Hallertau growing region:

1.000 ha (= 2500 acres) – total destroyed - no crop in 2009

1.500 ha (= 3750 acres) – 50 % destroyed.

1.000 ha (= 2500 acres) – 25 % destroyed.

The estimated shortfall at this stage is 116,000ztrs (5,800 tonnes) roughly equivalent to 19% of the normal Hallertau Crop.

In the Tettnang growing region:

Approximately 40% of the crop is affected. The estimated shortfall at this stage is approximately 8,500ztrs (425 tonnes) roughly equivalent to 25% of a normal crop.

The attached pictures show the extent of some of the damage. We certainly do not want to be seen to be scaremongering and are not sure of exact figures or the effect on the market at this stage but thought SIBA members should be made aware of the situation.

Best regards,
Paul Corbett

Bill Davis started a thread about the new and improved beer section in Garguile's Red Apple on Perry Avenue in East Bremerton. Many other folks piled on with their favorable comments about all the new cooler space and greater selection. If you haven't been there lately, get in there soon. I believe they have the biggest selection in Kitsap County, yes, bigger than Central Market. Now if only they'd put a beer tab on their home page:

Proposed Increase of Federal Excise Tax a Serious Threat to Small Brewers and Your Beer Choice –
Contact Your Senators Now

736 Pearl Street

Dear Beer Enthusiast,

Small brewers are facing an imminent and extremely serious threat to their businesses. The consequences of remaining silent have the very real potential of reducing your choice of beer and dramatically increasing the price of any beer that you purchase.

The Senate Finance Committee in Washington, DC is currently considering a proposal to increase and equalize the excise tax for alcohol beverages as part of healthcare reform deliberations. This proposal would triple the excise tax for 4.5% ABV beer and impose even higher excise tax rates for higher ABV beers.

If such a proposal becomes reality, there is no question that many small brewery businesses will suffer, some will close and consumers will face higher prices and diminished choice in the marketplace.

The Brewers Association brewery members and leadership have been actively engaged in building the case against an excise tax increase, recently submitting a letter to the Committee outlining our opposition.

We need you to speak out now. Today or tomorrow at the latest.

If you live in the following states it is most urgent that you contact your Senator who is on the Senate Finance Committee:
Arizona Nevada
Arkansas New Jersey
Delaware New Mexico
Florida New York
Idaho North Dakota
Iowa Oregon
Kansas Texas
Kentucky Utah
Maine Washington
Massachusetts West Virginia
Michigan Wyoming
Montana

If your Senators are not members of that committee, ask them to contact their Finance Committee colleagues and express their opposition to this proposal moving forward.

Your ask of them is simple:

Oppose the Tax Increase. Let them know that you oppose, in the strongest possible terms, raising the federal excise tax on beer because of the serious consequences it would have on small brewers and the craft beer they brew. Additional talking points appear below.

Once again: If one of your Senators sits on the Senate Finance Committee (roster of members below), urge them to oppose this proposal in committee deliberations.

If your Senators are not members of that committee, ask them to contact their Finance Committee colleagues and express their opposition to this proposal moving forward.

Take Action - Call and/or email your Senators’ Washington or district offices and make your personal case against this massive excise tax increase.

As always, thanks for your support.

ISSUES OF IMPORTANCE TO SMALL BREWERS EXCISE TAXES

Small brewers are small Main street businesses, typically employing 10 to 50 employees.

* Small brewers represent only 4% of the entire U.S. beer market by volume, with 95% of them being very small businesses (producing 15,000 barrels or less per year).

We strongly oppose proposals to increase the excise tax on beer.

* Proposals to increase and equalize the tax among all types of alcohol will tax small brewers at the highest rates because our specialty, gourmet and innovative beers typically have higher alcohol contents.
* Brewers already pay a disproportionately higher share of taxes compared with other products – federal, state and local taxes represent over 40% of the retail price for beer while the same taxes equal nearly 24% of the price for all other purchases.

Higher taxes will worsen the economic recession – resulting in less competitive products, reduced sales and revenues, lost jobs and, for some small brewers, business closures.

* $1 per case excise tax increase will typically cost the consumer at least $1.69 due to successive mark-ups as the case moves from brewer to wholesaler to retailer.
* Many small brewers are struggling to deal with the consequences of the 2008 spike in ingredient and operational costs.

Details on the Washington Brewers Festival (from the WABL newsletter):
The "Mother of All Fathers Day Festivals" is just a few weeks away! Here are some tips to help you plan your trip to the Festival.

Beer highlights (a complete list of beer is available online.)

NW classics There is never a shortage of NW style hoppy beers at this event. After all, it is the "Washington Brewers Festival". There will be over 30 varieties of IPA's alone, including such classics like Boundary Bay IPA, a few Belgian IPA's (Big Al Belgian IPA and Elliott Bay Organic Hop von Boorian) and Double IPA's (Hale's Aftermath IPA, Big Time Double Decade IPA and Pike Double IPA which was brewed as the inaugural Seattle Beer Week Beer earlier this year). Also not to be missed is the only continuously-hopped IPA brewed on the west coast by Cashmere Brewing Co. who is going to make their first Brewers Fest appearance this year.

Summer seasonals Now the sun is out more often and temperature is soaring, so is the demand for refreshing summer seasonals. There will be many thirst quenchers such as crisp and clean lagers, Hefeweizens, Blondes and other summer seasonals. Try The Golden Boot by Elysian, Honey Big E Summer Creamsicle, Big Al Summer Lager and Issaquah Brewhouse White Frog.

Art of darkness While many people opt for something light and refreshing there are always some that want to rebel and prefer darker beers regardless of the temperature outside. For those rebels there will be plenty of dark, robust beers including Quilter's Irish Death by Iron Horse, Black Frog Stout by Snoqualmie Falls, Hooskal Stout by Skoooum (a Friday beer) and Flyer's award-winning Pacemaker Porter.

"Real" ales Every year an increasing number of breweries are bringing cask-conditioned beers (also known as "real ale"), a welcome trend for many cask fans. Diamond Knot will bring a different cask beer each day while Silver City will have two throughout the weekend (Cask Whoop Pass IPA and Fat Scotch). Anacortes will be pouring their popular Cask IPA (a Friday beer) which has won the Cask Festival People's Choice Awards multiple times. Another cask-conditioned Friday beer is Cask Black Pilsner, Scuttlebutt's highly inventive new brew.

Fruity beers Summer is a farmers market season and restaurant chefs are not the only ones who get inspirations by fresh produce. There are many beers brewed with a variety of fruits such as Northern Lights Blueberry Cream, Schooner Exact Seamstress Union (Raspberry Wheat), Rock Bottom Black Cherry Saison, and Trade Route Mango Weizen.

"Rootbeer" Garden The "Mother of All Fathers Day Festivals" promises to cater to the entire family which means kids deserve the highest quality products just like their Mom and Dad do. In the Rootbeer Garden presented by Washington Beer kids will get to enjoy the finest rootbeer and soda brewed by Big E Ales, Boundary Bay, Fremont Brewing, Gallagher's, Lazy Boy, Rock Bottom, Silver City and Trade Route.

New Kids on the Block Every year the Festival introduces new breweries to thousands of beer aficionados and this year's no exception. Black Raven Brewing who's been receiving rave reviews since they opened in April will make its festival debut, as well as Fremont Brewing who is scheduled to open in June will be pouring Universale Pale and Interurban IPA. Also new to the Festival are Big Al Brewing, Chuckanut Brewery & Kitchen and Three Skulls Ales.

Back to the future-
ALABAMA – It's official. The sale of draught beer has been approved in Muscle Shoals, Sheffield and Tuscumbia counties. As a result, restaurants are gearing up to be able to serve their customers which means that distributors will have to gear up to meet the increased demand. This effort, though just approved recently, was initiated back in July of 2007 after the city of Florence got the approval for draught beer sales.

Kegs at the Budweiser Distribution Center in Muscle Shoals are stacked and ready to go. General Sales Manager, Greg Matthews, is expecting the recent approval in Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia will open up whole new distribution areas for the company and begin increasing sales immediately. Now that draft beer sales are allowed, local businesses aren't wasting any time. Matthews says they've already received pre-orders that are substantially higher than expected. Sheffield businesses can immediately start selling keg beer; however, in Muscle Shoals and Tuscumbia, the ordinance will have to be posted or advertised before the law goes into effect.

It's Better To Drink Beer After Exercise Than Water
http://www.clevelandleader.com/node/3467

Researchers at Granada University in Spain have come across a discovery that will undoubtedly please athletes and sports enthusiasts - a pint of beer post-workout or match is better at rehydrating the human body than water.

Professor Manuel Garzon, a member of Granada's medical faculty, made the finding after tests on 25 students over several months. Researchers believe that it is the sugars, salts, and bubbles in a beer that may help people absorb fluids more quickly.

The subjects in the study were asked to run on a treadmill at temperatures of 104F (40C) until they were close to exhaustion. Once they had reached the point of giving up, researchers measured their hydration levels, motor skills, and concentration ability.

Half of the subjects were given two half pints of Spanish lager to drink, and the other half were given just water.

Garzon said that the rehydration effection in those who were given beer was "slightly better" than those who were given only water. He also believes that the carbon dioxide in beer helps quench thirst more quickly, and that beer's carbohydrates replace calories lost during physical exertion.

The average person loses around 1 liter (33oz) of water for every hour of exercise in sweat. Rehydrating after a workout is crucial, as a lack of hydration is more likely to make one feel tired, fuzzyheaded, and suffer from headaches.

Based on the results of the study, researchers recommend moderate consumption of beer as a part of athletes' diets. "Moderate consumption" for men is 500ml per day, and for women is 250ml per day.

So that explains why Babe Ruth was so good. His method of training was nearly 100 years ahead of its time.

COLORADO – The Boulder based Brewers Association announced on the annual Top 50 craft brewing companies. Rankings for the top 50 list are based on 2008 sales volume. The top 5 are:

Boston Beer Co. – Boston, MA
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. – Chico, CA
New Belgium Brewing Co. – Fort Collins, CO
Spoetzl Brewery – Shiner, TX
Pyramid Breweries, Inc. – Seattle, WA

You can find the entire list at http://www.beertown.org/ba/media_2009/Top_50_Release.html

WORLD INDUSTRY – Estimates for 2009 barley production released by Coceral at the end of last month are as follows:

Germany – total barley acreage expected to make 1,951 thousand ha versus 1,969 thousand ha in 2008. Production is forecast to decline to 11,921 thousand tons in 2009 from 12,031 thousand tons in 2008.
France – total barley acreage expected to make 1,823 thousand ha in 2009 a 1.44% increase over 2008. Production is forecast to decline 4.67% to 11,758 thousand tons in 2009 versus 12,309 thousand tons in 2008.
Spain – total barley acreage in 2009 will be down by -11.68% to roughly 3,100 thousand ha. Production is forecast to decline 25.12% to 9,000 thousand tons versus 11,261 thousand tons in 2008.

Beer quotes/poems-

For drink, there was beer which was very strong when not mingled with water, but was agreeable to those who were used to it. They drank this with a reed, out of the vessel that held the beer, upon which they saw the barley swim.
-Xenophon, Anabasis. Book 4, chapter 5

While beer brings gladness, don't forget
That water only makes you wet.
-Harry Leon Wilson, The Spenders, pg. 237

How easy can the barley-bree
Cement the quarrel!
It's aye the cheapest lawyer's fee
To taste the barrel.
-Robert Burns

BALLAD ON ALE

By JOHN GAY (1685—1732)

WHILE some in epic strains delight,
While others pastorals invite,
As taste or whim prevail;
Assist me, all ye tuneful Nine,
Support me in the great design
To sing of nappy ale.

Some folks of cider made a rout,
And cider's well enough, no doubt,
When better liquors fail;
But wine, that's richer, better still,
Ev'n wine itself (deny't who will)
Must yield to nappy ale.

Rum, brandy, gin, with choicest smack,
From Holland brought, Batavia sack,
All these will nought avail
To cheer a truly British heart,
And lively spirits to impart,
Like humming, nappy ale.

Oh! whether thee I closely hug
In honest can or nut-brown jug,
Or in the tankard hail;
In barrel or in bottle pent,
I give the generous spirit vent,
Still may I feast on ale.

But chief when to the cheerful glass,
From vessel pure, thy streamlets pass,
Then most thy charms prevail;
Then, then, I'll bet, and take the odds,
That nectar, drink of heathen gods,
Was poor compared to ale!

Give me a bumper, fill it up:
See how it sparkles in the cup;
Oh, how shall I regale
Can any taste this drink divine,
And then compare rum, brandy, wine,
Or ought with nappy ale?

Inspired by thee the warrior fights,
The lover wooes, the poet writes,
And pens the pleasing tale;
And still in Britain's isle confest,
Nought animates the patriot's breast
Like generous, nappy ale.

High church and Low oft raise a strife,
And oft endanger limb and life,
Each studious to prevail;
Yet Whig and Tory, opposite
In all things else, do both unite
In praise of nappy ale.

Inspired by thee, shall Crispin sing,
Or talk of freedom, church and king,
And balance Europe's scale;
While his rich landlord lays out schemes
Of wealth in golden South Sea dreams,
Th' effects of nappy ale

O blest potation! still by thee
And thy companion Liberty,
Do health and mirth prevail;
Then let us crown the can, the glass,
And sportive bid the minutes pass
In quaffing nappy ale.

Ev'n while these stanzas I indite,
The bar-bell's grateful sounds invite
Where joy can never fail.
Adieu, my muse! adieu I haste
To gratify my longing taste
With copious draughts of ale.

02 Roger Creager With Radney Foster - I Say When I Drink What I Think When I'm Sober.mp3
Roger Creager With Radney Foster
I Say When I Drink What I Think When I'm Sober

I say when I drink what I think when I'm sober
It loosens my tongue and makes me feel bolder
I'm in the mood to do a little drinking tonight
Like it or not, this is on my mind
I could sit here silent or get drunk and confide
Barkeep another round I can't keep it inside

Excuse miss, could I buy you a cocktail?
You're so pretty and I just love the way that you...hey
Are those real? Huh? Oh, no I mean your eyes, of course
They're so beautiful and hey, where you goin'?

I say when I drink what I think when I'm sober
It loosens me up and makes me feel bolder
I'm in the mood to do a little drinking tonight
Like it or not, this is on my mind
I could sit here silent or get drunk and confide
Barkeep another round I can't keep it inside

Roger, there are existential, physical and spiritual reasons
Why man cannot live by bread alone
It's not a simple thing in life
It's very complex, it takes a long time and it's excellent
What is it, Radney?
Brisket and beer

I say when I drink what I think when I'm sober
It loosens my tongue and makes me feel bolder
I'm in the mood to do a little drinkin' tonight
Like it or not, this is on my mind
I could sit here silent or get drunk and confide
Barkeep another round I can't keep it inside

Now a friend of mine that drinks to an alarming amount
Tells me it's not what goes in a man's mouth that defiles him
But rather what comes out
So as I sit her tonight, I worry not about what I'm drinking
But rather how much I'm speakin' 'cause it seems every time

I say when I drink what I think when I'm sober
It loosens my tongue and it makes me feel bolder
I'm in the mood to do a little drinkin' tonight
(I'll do a little drinkin' tonight)
Like it or not, this is on my mind
I could sit here silent or get drunk and confide
Barkeep another round I can't keep it inside

Belgian Asociality
Hip Hop Mout En Gist

ge vliegt daar in ne combi
ge krijgt een gratis rit
uw ogen zijn gesloten

05 The Marshall Tucker Band - Good Ole Hurtin' Song.mp3
The Marshall Tucker Band
Good Ole Hurtin' Song

This ol' beer gut I got don’t get no smaller
If I thought it’d do any good I’d go ahead and call her
I’ve been drinkin’ up my pain since she’s been gone
For every fool there’s a good barstool
And the same ol' sad, sad song

That beer would go a lot farther with a good ol' hurtin’ song
Drink a few with a song or two, it never takes me long
And as long as I got the money I’ll stay where I belong
Yeah, that beer would go a lot farther with a good ol' hurtin’ song

My friends keep tellin’ me boy you oughta quit it
But they ain’t the ones that have to drink to forget it
And forgettin’ don’t come easy when you’re sober and all alone
So I pop my tops and play the jukebox 'til all the pain is gone

That beer would go a lot farther with a good ol' hurtin’ song
Drink a few with a song or two, it never takes me long
And as long as I got the money I’ll stay where I belong
Yeah, that beer will go a lot farther with a good ol' hurtin’ song

Yeah the beer would go a lot farther with a good ole hurtin’ song

Rod Stewart
What's Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made A Loser Out Of Me)

It's late and she is waiting and I know I must go home
But every time I start to leave they play another song
Then someone buys another round and whenever drinks are free
What made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me

Baby's begged me not to go so many times before
She said love and happiness can't live behind those swingin' doors
Now she's gone and I'm to blame too late I finally see
What made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me

Baby's begged me not to go so many times before
She said love and happiness can't live behind those swingin' doors
Nows she's gone and I'm to blame too late I finally see
What made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me
What made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me
What made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me

08 John Michael Montgomery - Goes Good With Beer.mp3
John Michael Montgomery
Goes Good With Beer

Flat tire on the interstate.
Too many nights of workin' too late.
Had a run in with an old memory.
No, it ain't been the best of weeks.

But it goes good with beer and the Friday night atmosphere.
Of this crosstown bar where the cars all get steered to.
And it goes hand in hand with my crazy buddies and this three-piece band,
And the pretty girls and the games we play, and the smoke and mirrors.
Yeah, troubles come, but they go good with beer.
Yeah, it does. Yeah.

Bring all your debts and all your bills.
Load up your mountains and your molehills.
Come as you ain't or as you are,
An' don't forget that broken heart.

Oh, it goes good with beer and the Friday night atmosphere
Of this crosstown bar where the cars all get steered to.
And it goes hand in hand with my crazy buddies and this three-piece band,
An' the pretty girls and the games we play, and the smoke and mirrors.
Yeah, troubles come, but they go good with beer.
Yee haw. Oh yeah.

Bring all those stories you can share.
Just like the peanuts and the pretzels on the table there.

Yeah, it all goes good with beer and the Friday night atmosphere,
And the pretty girls and the games we play, and the smoke and mirrors.
Yeah, troubles come, but they goooo........
Good with beer and the Friday night atmosphere,
Of this cross town bar where the cars all get steered to.
And they go hand in hand with my crazy buddies and this three-piece band,
And the pretty girls and the games we play, and the smoke and mirrors.

Yeah, it all goes good with beer and the Friday night atmosphere,
Of this cross town bar where the cars all get steered to.
And it goes hand in hand with my crazy buddies and this ten-piece band,
And the pretty girls and the games we play, and the smoke and mirrors.
Yeah, troubles come, but they go good with beer.

Pass me them peanuts.

09 Kenny Chesney - Beer In Mexico.mp3
Kenny Chesney
Beer In Mexico

Starin' out into the wild blue yonder
So many thoughts to sit and ponder
'Bout life and love and lack of
And this emptiness in my heart

Too old to be wild and free still
Too young to be over the hill
Should I try to grow up
But who knows where to start

So I just ...
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Do my best to waste another day
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Let the warm air melt these blues away

Sun comes up and sun sinks down
And I seen 'em both in this tourist town
Up for days in a rage
Just tryin' to search my soul

From the answers and the reasons why
I'm at these crossroads in my life
And I really don't know
Which way to go

So I just ...
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Do my best t' waste another day
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Let the warm air melt these blues away

Maybe I'll settle down, get married
Or stay single and stay free
Which road I travel
Is still a mystery to me

So I'll just ...
Sit right here, have another beer in Mexico
Do my best to waste another day
Sit right here and have another beer in Mexico
Let the warm air melt these blues away

Down in Mexico ...

10 Kevin Fowler - Ain't Drinkin' Anymore.mp3
Kevin Fowler
Ain't Drinkin' Anymore

I've been goin' out every night havin' a ball
Comin' home about a quarter to two
Oh you said that you'd be leavin'
If you didn't start seein'
A change in me really soon
You said it's gettin' really old
And that you wanna be told
That I ain't a drinkin' no more
Well now honey here it goes,
Better listen close
Before you go walkin' out the door

I ain't a drinkin' anymore
Oh now that's what you want me to say
I ain't a drinkin anymore
Guess you finally got your way
Nope I ain't a drinkin' not a one beer
That's what you wanna hear
But honey I must confess
I ain't a drinkin' anymore
But I ain't drinkin' any less

I got lit the other night
Yeah I got in a fight
The police had me down on the ground
They were puttin' on the cuffs
They really roughed me up
They said, "Boy, we're takin' you down."
Before he read my rights
He said, "Take my advice.
Don't let me catch you drinkin' no more."
I said, "Officer please let me go
And I won't do it anymore
Come on let me go on home."

I ain't a drinkin' anymore
Oh now that's what you want me to say
I ain't a drinkin' anymore
Guess you finally got your way
Nope, I ain't a drinkin' not a one beer
That's what you wanna hear
But honey I must confess
I ain't a drinkin' any more
But I ain't drinkin' any less

I ain't a drinkin' anymore
Oh now that's what you want me to say
I ain't a drinkin' anymore
Guess you finally got your way
Nope I ain't a drinkin' not a one beer
That's what you wanna hear
But honey I must confess
I ain't a drinkin' any more
But I ain't drinkin' any less
No, I ain't drinkin' any more
But I ain't drinkin' any less

11 Kris Kristofferson - To Beat The Devil.mp3
Kris Kristofferson
To Beat The Devil

It was winter time in Nashville down on Music City Row
And I was lookin' for a place to get myself out of the cold
To warm the frozen feelin' that was eatin' at my soul
Keep the chilly wind off my guitar
My thirsty wanted whiskey and my hunger needed beans
But it'd been a month of paydays since I heard that eagle scream
So with a stomach full of empty and a pocket full of dreams
I left my pride and stepped inside a bar
Actually I guess you'd call it a tavern
Cigarette smoke to the ceiling sawdust on the floor friendly shadows
I saw that there was just one old man sittin' at the bar
And in the mirror I could see him checkin' me and my guitar
He turned and said come up here boy show us what you are I said I'm dry he bought me a beer
He nodded at my guitar said it's a tough life ain't it I just looked at him
And he said you ain't makin' any money are you I said you been readin' my mail
He just smiled and said let me see that guitar
I got somethin' you oughta hear then he layed it on me

If you waste your time a talkin' to the people who don't listen
To the things that you are sayin' who do you thinks gonna hear
And if you should die explainin' how the things that they complain about
Or things they could be changing who do you thinks gonna care
There were other lonely singers in the world turned deaf and blind
Who were crucified for what they tried to show
And their voices have been scattered by the swirling winds of time
'Cause the truth remains that no one wants to know

Well the old man was a stranger but I'd heard his song before
Back when failure had me locked out on the wrong side of the door
When no one stood behind me but my shadow on the floor
And lonesome was more than a state of mind
You see the devil haunts a hungry man
If you don't wanna join him you gotta beat him
And I ain't sayin' I beat the devil but I drink his beer for nothin'
Then I stole his song

And you can still hear me singin' to the people who don't listen
To the things that I am sayin' prayin' someone's gonna hear
And I guess I'll die explaining how the things that they complain about
Are things they could be change hopin' someone's gonna care
I was born a lonely singer and I'm bound to die the same
But I've got to feed the hunger in my soul
And if I never have a nickel I won't ever die in shame
'Cause I don't believe that no one wants to know

12 Johnny Cash - Sunday Morning Coming Down.mp3
Johnny Cash (written by Kris Kristofferson)
Sunday Morning Coming Down

Well, I woke up Sunday mornin' with no way
To hold my head that didn't hurt
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad
So I had one more for dessert.

Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoke my mind the night before
With cigarettes and songs I'd been pickin'
But I lit my first and watched the small kid
Playin' with the can that he was kickin'.

Then I walked across the street and caught
The Sunday smell of someone's fryin' chicken
And Lord it took me back to somethin'
That I lost somewhere, somehow along the way.

On a Sunday morning sidewalk
I'm wishing Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
The makes a body feel alone.

And there's nothing short of dyin'
Half as lonesome as the sound
Of the sleeping city sidewalk
And Sunday morning coming down.

In the park I saw a daddy
With the laughin' little girl that he was swingin'
And I stopped beside a Sunday school
And listened to the songs they were singin'.

Then I headed down the street and somewhere far away
A lonely bell was ringing
And it echoed through the canyons
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

On a Sunday morning sidewalk
I'm wishing Lord, that I was stoned
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone.

And there's nothing short of dyin'
That's half as lonesome as the sound
Of the sleeping city sidewalk
And Sunday morning coming down.

13 Blake Shelton - The More I Drink.mp3
Blake Shelton
The More I Drink

He was sittin' at the bar, sippin' on a regular Coke
We were drinkin' and smokin' and makin' him the butt of our jokes
We all said, "Man, what happened to you? Why can't you just have a few?"
He said, "I would if I could, but it's probably best that I don't."

[Chorus]
'Cause the more I drink, the more I drink
Yeah, I'm the world's greatest lover and a dancin' machine
I get loud, I get proud....and it gets worse
Well if I have one, I'll have thirteen
Naw, there ain't no in between
'Cause, the more I drink, the more I drink.

A couple of cold ones, and somebody hands me a shot.
Hell, even bucktoothed and bowlegged women start lookin' hot
And pretty soon I'm bummin' cigarettes and sweet talkin' some big brunette
Yeah, once I get on a roll, ain't no tellin' where I'll stop

'Cause the more I drink, the more I drink
Yeah, I'm the world's greatest lover and a dancin' machine
I get loud, I get proud....and it gets worse
Yeah if I have one, I'll have thirteen
Naw, there ain't no in between
'Cause, the more I drink, the more I drink, the more I drink.

Yep-yep
Humm, that's what I'm talking about

Man, if I have one, I'll have thirteen
And they can't get me off the karaoke machine,
The more I drink...the more I drink.
Yeah, the more I drink, the more I drink, the more I drink.

Rough And Ready
(Wiseman / MacKichan / White)

Yeeeeah
Alright boys follow me
Mostly in A
Stay with me now
Listen up this is philosophical

Mud grips - white-tip
Cigar stickin' out of my face
Earnhardt racing sticker on the window
Banged up fender
4x4 - straight pipe roar
Primer and rust all over the door
Scarred up knuckles, Mack belt buckle
White t-shirt - ain't afraid to work
Got a "what-are-you-looking-at-pretty boy" smirk

Cold beer, hot wings
Wranglers, Skoal ring
Get just what you see
Gun rack, ball cap
Don't take no crap
Ain't a pretty boy-toy
I'll rock you steady
Rough and ready

Work boots - one blue suit
Size too small - won't wear it at all
Unless somebody kicks - gets hitched
It don’t fit – and makes me itch
Up with sun - off on the run
Makin' money money - 'cause I wanna have fun
5 o'clock whistle - off like a missile
Got a hot date, girl named Kate
Think's I'm cool - 'cause I shoot straight
Ain't one thing about her fake
She's long and tall - and she goes great with

Cold beer, hot wings
Wranglers, Skoal ring
Get just what you see
Gun rack, ball cap
Don't take no crap
Ain't a pretty boy-toy
I'll rock you steady
Rough and ready
Rough and ready, Baby

Ahh, here’s Johnny (fiddle solo)
Just like that (piano solo)
Ah, here you go Grodo (fiddle solo)
I ain’t never heard nothin’ like that

Well you are who you are
That's all right with me
But I am who I am
That's all I can be
I like

Cold beer, hot wings
Wranglers, Skoal ring
Get just what you see
Gun rack, ball cap
Don't take no crap
Ain't a pretty boy-toy
I'll rock you steady
Rough and ready
Rough and ready
Rough and ready, baby
ah...that's me and my buddies we're all just alike
We all say, “Hey, watch this.”
That didn’t turn out too good.
You okay?
(Laughs) What are you looking at?
Yeah that’s a real gun in that gun rack.
No I don’t have a permit for it.
Do you have a permit to ask stupid questions like that?
You can get hurt boy.
Get away from me.

Floyd Van Laningham
Beer Me Up Scotty

Beer me up Scotty
Beam me to the moon
Turn on those neon satellites
Crank up the country tunes
I'm on a solo mission
To find some atmosphere
Beer me up Scotty
Or I'm outta here

Jump into my Mercury
Shift it into overdrive
I couldn't fight the gravity
Go to a downtown dive
Drawn into a barstool
Well I need a little space
Seems to been a light year
Since I landed in this place

Beer me up Scotty
Beam me to the moon
Turn on those neon satellites
Crank up the country tunes
I'm on a solo mission
To find some atmosphere
Beer me up Scotty
Or I'm outta here

Sittin' in a blue ???
piston as can be
The signal bein' sent from Merle
Strapped me to my seat
I've fallen off my axis
I feel I'm gonna crash and burn
I keep transportin' cold ones
To the point of no return

Beer me up Scotty
Beam me to the moon
Turn on those neon satellites
Crank up the country tunes
I'm on a solo mission
To find some atmosphere
Beer me up Scotty
Or I'm outta here

We're losin' our momentum
My destination's clear
Don't take no rocket scientist
To decipher why I'm here

Beer me up Scotty
Beam me to the moon
Turn on those neon satellites
Crank up the country tunes
I'm on a solo mission
To find some atmosphere
Beer me up Scotty
Or I'm outta here

So beer me up Scotty
Or I'm outta here

Got Mud

Yeah.
We're farmers' sons an' preacher's boys.
Small town with big toys.
Call us fools or call us brave,
On rainy nights, we parade,
In four wheel drives, the girls in jeans too tight.
Ain't no drive dirt. there ain't no dust.

Got mud, no fear, Bocephus, cold beer.
We bounce, we slide, we sing while we ride.
We don't like paved streets, asphalt or concrete.
Got mud, yeah, we got mud.

We spend days at the lake,
Kickin' back an soakin' rays.
Sunburn, it ain't no fun,
I'd trade a day in the sun for a good downpour.
That's what we're prayin' for,
We know every time it rains on us...

Got mud, no fear, Bocephus, cold beer.
We bounce, we slide, we sing while we ride.
We don't like paved streets, asphalt or concrete.
Got mud, we got mud.

(Whoo, who's playin' that thing?)

A good downpour.
That's what we're prayin' for,
We know every time it rains on us...

We got mud, no fear, (No fear.)
Bocephus, cold beer.
We bounce, we slide, (We slide.)
We sing while we ride.
We don't like paved streets, asphalt or concrete.

We got mud, no fear, Bocephus, cold beer.
We bounce, we slide, we sing while we ride.
We don't like paved streets, asphalt or concrete.
Mmm, got mud.
Yeah, we got mud.
(Got mud no fear.)
(Got mud no fear.)
I like to get dirty, you know what I mean.
(Got mud no fear.)
We got mud.

Beer Man

Spent the night with Jim Beam and Johnny Walker Red.
Woke up with a freight train runnin' through my head.
Ohh I'm a beer man...
Bobby's more the wine kind,
Donny does his shots;
Sammy sips martinis,
Willy smokes pot,
but I'm a beer man...

I've done a little steppin' out there on a limb,
but my open mind winds up closed again.
I like brown bottles and aluminum cans,
Simple maybe...
but that's who I am...
Hey, I'M JUST A BEER MAN.

Take your caviar and that fish that ain't cooked,
take if off a cracker and throw it on a hook.
I'm a beer man...
Oh and if I was a rich man tell ya what I'd do,
I'd be the same old, plain old, guy you always knew,
just a beer man...

I've done a little steppin' out there on a limb,
but my open mind winds up closed again.
I like brown bottles and aluminum cans,
Call me simple ...
but that's who I am...
Hey, I'M JUST A BEER MAN.

Yeah I've done a little steppin' out there on a limb,
but my open mind winds up closed again.
I like brown bottles and aluminum cans,
Call me simple ...
but I can't change who I am...
Whoa I'M JUST A BEER MAN.
Yeah... I'm a beer man.

Yeah... I'm a beer man.
Yes I am.

All Jacked Up

Heeeeey yeah

Well, 5:30pm rolls around, there's a lil ol' joint outside of town
Only got time for just a couple of beers
And a jukebox song ringin' in my ears
The next thing you know the bartender's pouring, shots are flowin, got me stoned man
All I really know is that I should be goin'
But I'm soakin up the moment.

And I'm all jacked up (all jacked up)
I'm all jacked up (all jacked up)
Don't believe I've ever had this much
One thing I've learned when you get tore up
Time sure flies when you're all jacked up

It was gettin' mighty close to 9 o'clock
What the hell I'll have one more shot
Then I winked at a boy at the end of the bar
Guess I might of must of gone a lil too far
'Cause a big ol' girl walked outta the blue
Ten foot two with a bad attitude
Stepped right up and knocked out my tooth
I guess I had it comin I deserved it too

Cause I was all jacked up (all jacked up)
All jacked up (all jacked up)
Don't believe I've ever had this much
One thing I've learned when you get tore up,
Don't start no stuff when you're all jacked up

Don't have to go home but you can't stay here
That's what they said when I got my last beer
Oh my god it's 2 o'clock
I can't find my keys and my truck's locked
So I grab a tire tool and I broke my window,
Hurt my elbow, got me in though
2 foot later backed into the light pole
All the town folk got a good show

All jacked up (all jacked up)
All jacked up (all jacked up)
Don't believe I've ever had this much
One thing I've learned when you get tore up
Don't drive your truck when you're all jacked up

Jacked up (all jacked up)
(All jacked up)
WOOOOO
One thing I've learned when you get tore up,
don't start no stuff when your all jacked up
One thing I've learned when you get tore up
Don't drive your car
Don't start no stuff in no bar
Hell I wouldn't even tell anybody where you are
When you're aaaaall jacked up
(all jacked up)
All jacked up
[Repeat to end]

Yeah

19 Luke Bryan - All My Friends Say.mp3
Luke Bryan
All My Friends Say

I got smoke in my hair
My clothes thrown everywhere
Woke up in my rocking chair
Holdin' a beer in my hand
Sportin' a neon tan

My stereo cranked up
I can't find my truck
How'd I get home from the club
Ain't got a clue what went down
So I started callin' around

And all my friends say
I started shooting doubles
When you walked in
All my friends say
I went a little crazy
Seeing you with him
You know I don't remember a thing
But they say I sure was raising some Cain
I was a rock star, party hard,
Getting over you comeback kid
Yeah I must have did
What all my friends say
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

I found my billfold
I cried oh no no
Good time Charlie got me now I'm broke
But it was worth acting like a fool
Yeah girl I must have really showed you

'Cause all my friends say
I started shootin' doubles
When you walked in
All my friends say
I went a little crazy
Seeing you with him
You know I don't remember a thing
But they say I sure was raising some Cain
I was a rock star, party hard,
Getting over you comeback kid
Yeah I must have did
What all my friends say
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

I was Elvis rockin' on the bar
Workin' the crowd pourin' out my heart
And all my friends say
I started shootin' doubles
When you walked in
All my friends say
I went a little crazy
Seeing you with him
You know I don't remember a thing
But they say I sure was raisin' some Cain
I was a rock star, party hard,
Getting over you comeback kid
Yeah I must have did
What all my all my friends say
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
That's what all my friends say
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
That's what all my friends say
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
That's what all my friends say
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Charlie, Charlie we need some shots right up front here
Beer in the back too

20 Dry County - Champagne Her Beer Me.mp3
Dry County
Champagne Her, Beer Me

We met by chance just after River Dance
In a club on the Strip where I just didn't fit in
When I asked her name and all I got was a grin
I didn't think I stood a chance

When she told me I could buy her a round
I knew the woman was alone in this town well

I know she'd rather been in Mexico
Somewhere with the sun or an ocean scene
She smiles like those Vegas lights are made of gold
Champagne her was here, with beer me, beer me.

We stopped at a shop to pawn her memories
???It never happens, and wants, with the wedding rings
and we was drownin' in drinks
and the I love yous I think
is just what got us here alone

The reason she was solo here wasn't mentioned
and I didn't want to pay it the attention

Well I know she'd rather been in Mexico
Somewhere with the sun or an ocean scene
She smiles like those Vegas lights are made of gold
Champagne her was here, with beer me, beer me.

Well in the mornin' she was just another lover
We didn't want to take a chance on each other
and as we passed the Vegas city limits sign
a tear showed
and I know (I know)

I know she'd rather been in Mexico
Somewhere with the sun or an ocean scene
She smiles like those Vegas lights are made of gold
Champagne her was here
Well, I know she'd rather been in Mexico
Somewhere with the sun or an ocean scene
She smiles like those Vegas lights are made of gold
Champagne her was here, champagne her was here
Champagne her was here, with beer me
Here with beer me, she was here with me, beer me.

Goes Down Easy

I don't care if it comes in a bottle
I don't care if it comes in a can
I don't care if it's stirred or shaken
Man, could you give me one for both hands

If it goes down easy
(Yeah) it makes you feel good
If it goes down easy
It makes you feel good

Sign on the wall said no dancin' on the tables
She never lets the rules get in her way
No, she don't
She got da whole joint jumpin' and goin' crazy, ha ha ha
She grabbed my hand and danced me right outta the place
Out of the place

If it goes down easy
It makes you feel good
If it goes down easy
It makes you feel good

Might be one 'a those fine French wines
Might be some good ol' down homebrew
Long as we get to have a good time
Most times anything will do

If it goes down easy
It makes you feel good
If it goes down easy
It makes you feel good

Oh, that sound is sweet to me, man
Listen here now

There're things in life that just keep gettin' better
Ah, yeah
I said no, but I guess maybe I meant yes, ha ha ha
Hey, she insisted, so I just had to let her
When it's that smooth who really cares what anybody says
I don't

(So if it goes down easy)
(It makes you feel good)
It makes you feel good
(If it goes down easy)
(It makes you feel good)
(If it goes down easy)
Keep it comin' baby, fill up my glass
(It makes you feel good)
It's killin' me and I like it like that
(If it goes down easy)
Maybe we shouldn't, maybe we should
(It makes you feel good)
All I know is it makes you feel good
(If it goes down easy)
It makes you feel good
(It makes you feel good)
(If it goes down easy)
(It makes you feel good)
(If it goes down easy)
(It makes you feel good)
