October 2009
This month's club meeting will be hosted by Ernie and Marti at their home west of Silverdale. Here's her invitation:
Ernie and I will host the WSB October meeting on Friday the 16th starting at 6pm. The theme will be "spooky beers" - wear your favorite Halloween t-shirt. There will be good eats and 'graveyard cake' - feel free to bring snacks.
Contact Us for directions
Thanks, Marti
Brad is willing to take over newsletter duties in January if nobody else steps up, but I'm sure he'd appreciate help and ideas, or maybe sharing the job. Think about what you want from your club and its newsletter, can you make it happen? Browse the web for what other clubs do.
If nothing else, remember to pass along interesting beer related news, links, jokes, quotes, etc. If you liked it chances are we all will. It it's a bit risqué or embarrassing ask that your name not be mentioned, yes I mean you (redacted)!
Marina Market Tastings, remnants
I wish I'd been able to get this newsletter out earlier so you wouldn't have missed Marina Market's amazing beer tasting last night (Thursday, Oct. 8, in downtown Poulsbo).
Get on their mailing list so you don't miss another.
Jonathan and Andrea put out an amazing spread of pretzels, mustards (4-6 kinds), sausages, chocolates (5-8 kinds), cheeses (4+ kinds), crackers, and of course beer. We tasted larger bottles (keep an eye on their cooler for a new section for these bottles) of Delirium Tremens, Delirium Nocturnum, Delirium Noel, Het Anker Grand Cru of the Emperor '06 and '07, Saint Feuillen Noel, Gouden Carolus Hopsinjoor, and so many more.
They had some leftover chocolates, cheeses, pickles, onions, veggies, and open jars of mustards. They'll continue serving the appropriate leftover today and throughout the weekend.
They have a ton of great beers in stock and get more all the time. Their Scandinavian beer selection is to die for, and cheaper than most places in Seattle and Portland. Check your favorite beer rating sites for the beers from Nøgne Ø, Haand, Pripps Carnegie, Sinebrychoff and more then come in and grab some.
Between Marina Market and Tizley's new bottle store almost next door you have to get in to downtown Poulsbo sometime soon.

2009 GABF Quick Stats
49,000 Attendees (includes brewers, volunteers, and tick holders)
3,308 Beers in the GABF Competition
3,000 Volunteers
2,100 Beers served in the hall
495 Breweries in the competition
457 Breweries in the festival hall
132 Judges from 10 countries
78 Categories judged + Pro-Am category
72 Beers entered into the Pro-Am Competition
51 Breweries attending for the first time
Colorado and California typically dominate the competition each year for the most medals won by each state, with Colorado breweries and brewpubs coming out ahead for 2009. The top five medal winning states were: CO (45), CA (39), OR (22), WA (13), PA (12).
The GABF competition attracted 132 international beer judges from ten countries. Award-winning brewers received prestigious gold, silver and bronze medals in 78 beer categories, establishing the best examples of each style in the US.
GABF comments-
Some people have noticed a disturbing tendency for Colorado breweries to win a disproportionate share of the medals at the GABF held annually in their home state. Sure CO has great breweries but should easy access to the event account for such dominance? What if the event was held in Hawaii?

A note from Brad Ginn:
I'm going to host an all-grain demonstration on Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day for anyone interested. Please include the following in the newsletter:
All-grain demonstration on Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day
Brad Ginn will be hosting an all-grain demonstration brew on Saturday, November 7. Brad will brew a batch on his single tier 10 gallon system and Bill Davis will be there with his 5 gallon 3-tier gravity rig. This is a good opportunity to see two different approaches to going all-grain. If you are thinking of getting into the hobby and want to see what all-grain brewing entails, an experienced extract brewer considering taking the leap, or an all-grain brewer willing to share your experience, join us for an informative afternoon. All levels of brewing expertise are welcome. If you want to bring your gear and brew (extract or all-grain) let Brad know and he'll make room. We will start setting up around 10:30 or 11:00 and plan to dough-in around 12 noon. We should be done between 4 and 5. There will be homebrew to sample and food for snacking. Bring some of your own homebrew and/or snacks if you want to share.
Contact Us if you intend to be there so Brad can plan around the number of attendees.
This Saturday, Poulsbo, October 10
Fall Harvest Fest
Saturday, October 10th brings the Historic Downtown Poulsbo Fall Harvest Fest with events for all ages. There will be children's fun activities and great shopping opportunities for parents. There will be a Ghoul Run for all the runners. There will be food booths, craft booths, home brewing booths, and cider pressing.
Tizley's has a bunch of beer related events going on in association with the festival (incl. the beer garden), and at the pub they have a bunch of great Oktoberfest beers from Bavaria and from Silver City and Alpine. Also, don't miss the Ommegang Grand Cru Rouge (a Flemish red/oud bruin brewed by Bockor in Flanders).
WSB Pub/Brewery crawl on Saturday, November 21?
This date has been suggested as a target for a club pub/brewery crawl around the Seattle area. Just wanted to get that out there early so you can start clearing your calendar and earning the requisite permissions.
Metro and SoundTransit can get us around the area quite efficiently in (almost) any weather, and a bit of hoofing it between stops to clear our heads and burn some calories is always a good idea. Start checking out some of the best places and talk about it at this month's meeting:

FRESH HOPS AVAILABILITY
I just returned from Montana yesterday and entering Yakima and Moxie via Hwy 24 I saw them harvesting miles and miles of hops. There were trucks piled high with bines all over the place and the spillover on the roads released great aroma as other vehicles crushed them as they drove by. It's a great time of year to visit the Yakima area. In Wetter Washington our hops have been arriving in profuse abundance this year too. So far John Altman and Don Wyatt have mentioned that they have plenty of fresh hops to get rid of. Let me know if you want help with your hops and I'll add you to the reminder mailing later this week.
Jeff Hummel brought some of his hop harvest to our awards ceremony both last year and this year. He has oasted them perfectly and they smell and taste great. Jeff might show up at Saturday's meeting with some hops for sale, if he still has some by then. He just forwarded his craigslist hops ad info to us:
ORGANIC CASCADE HOPS FOR HOMEBREWERS!
I have lots of organically grown Cascade Hops I have grown from 7 year old vines on Bainbridge Island. They were hand picked over the last couple weeks to get them as they ripen, then dried in my oast (hop kiln), vacuum packed and frozen.
They have a fairly high AA for a Cascade….somewhere in the range of an 8–9 AA so excellent for bittering, but with a very nice smell for aroma hops. I think you'll find the quality is very good. If you've ever chewed a fresh green hop, you'll recognize the taste it imparts to the beer.
I have 2 oz. for $5; 4 oz. for $10; and 8 oz. for $20. These will keep at least a year and when thawed out, should look, smell and feel as fresh as the day they were packed. I've had excellent feedback from last year's buyers so you won't be disappointed! These are superb!
I'll leave it to you to add your own review of them. Feel free to make use of the above in any way you want.
Thanks,
Jeff

I often go to ratebeer.com to check beery facts or find something fun for the newsletter. The site was down this AM so I went to another one of the best beer sites and grabbed their top 100 list:
http://beeradvocate.com/top_beers
It's similar to the list at ratebeer.com so apparently when you get enough thousands of beer geeks rating and voting on their favorite beers you do get to some sort of consensus, and of course Budweiser does not show up on either list.

BEERY LYRICS

Drinkin' Beer And Wastin' Bullets lyrics
out in the sticks
with the squirrells and the ticks
and my 30-06
im running out of miller light
trucks in park
the dog wont bark
couple hours til dark
wishing one would walk by
might as well left my gun in the gun rack
been here all day all ive killed a 12 pack
sitting here
waiting on a deer
drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets
aiming at the empties
missing hitting pine trees
aint my fault them cans keep moving
my babys on the phone
saying baby come home
where ya been and whatcha been doing
well ive been sitting here
waiting on a deer
drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets
the only deer i seens
been john deer green
but that dont mean
that i got a rawl deal
cause there aint no boss
callin' me hoss
ticking me off
on the edge of this corn field
on my second box of winchester hundred grains
aint seen a big buck
but its been a good day
sitting here
waiting on a deer
drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets
aiming at the empties
missing hitting pine trees
aint my fault them cans keep moving
my babys on the phone
saying baby come home
where ya been and whatcha been doing
well ive been sitting here
waiting on a deer
drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets
sitting here
waiting on a deer
drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets
aiming at the empties
missing hitting pine trees
aint my fault them cans keep moving
my babys on the phone
saying baby come home
where ya been and whatcha been doing
well ive been sitting here
waiting on a deer
drinkin' beer and wastin' bullets
"Roll Me Away"
Words and music by Bob Seger
Took a look down a westbound road,
Right away I made my choice
Headed out to my big two-wheeler,
I was tired of my own voice
Took a bead on the northern plains
And just rolled that power on
Twelve hours out of mackinaw city
Stopped in a bar to have a brew
Met a girl and we had a few drinks
And I told her what Id decided to do
She looked out the window a long long moment
Then she looked into my eyes
She didnt have to say a thing,
I knew what she was thinkin
Roll, roll me away,
Wont you roll me away tonight
I too am lost, I feel double-crossed
And Im sick of whats wrong and whats right
We never even said a word,
We just walked out and got on that bike
And we rolled
And we rolled clean out of sight
We rolled across the high plains
Deep into the mountains
Felt so good to me
Finally feelin free
Somewhere along a high road
The air began to turn cold
She said she missed her home
I headed on alone
Stood alone on a mountain top,
Starin out at the great divide
I could go east, I could go west,
It was all up to me to decide
Just then I saw a young hawk flyin
And my soul began to rise
And pretty soon
My heart was singin
Roll, roll me away,
Im gonna roll me away tonight
Gotta keep rollin, gotta keep ridin,
Keep searchin till I find whats right
And as the sunset faded
I spoke to the faintest first starlight
And I said next time
Next time
We'll get it right

Beer Drinker's Waltz
The band played and everyone talked
Through the plain old beer drinker’s waltz.
Well, they sweated and swore, and they spit on the floor
Where the cigarette butts were all thrown
They wrote on the wall and hid out from the law
And the whole gang was drunk-drivin’ home.
(refrain)
Some little snuff queen who was barely sixteen
Played an out of tune yamaha guitar
Some old boy named wink who brought his own drinks
Had his fiddle stoled out of his car.
(refrain)
The man tendin’ bar told the boy on guitar
He was a-drinkin’ a little too much
They announced on the mic that they left on the lights
In a dark blue chevrolet truck.
(refrain)
Well, somewhere in the heavens there’s a seven-o-seven
And they’re a-servin’ champagne in first class
Somewhere upstairs a child says it’s prayers
Oh, but downstairs they’re havin’ a blast.
(refrain)

Beer Truck Driver
I wanna be a beer truck driver
I wanna see that all the beer inside her
Safely makes it to its destination
I wanna be a beer truck drivin' sensation
Well when i was a little child I was riding a bus to school
I saw a terrible accident on the side of the road and the memory haunts me still
Well a big ol truck it was full of suds had passed over on its side
There were bottles broken all over the street there were very few left inside
Well the river of beer, yeah it was flowin right down county lane
Where the foam drowns into the gutter and down the sidewalk drain
And I wanna be a beer truck driver
I wanna see that all the beer inside her
Safely makes it to its destination
I wanna be a beer truck drivin' sensation
Well well I grew up with the rules of the road and my goal that seemed so clear
I learned that everything that is in back of me maybe closer than it appears
Well I was on a mission to save the folks who needed a cold beer
After a long hot day with little pay I'd be right there for you
Well I went down to beer truck driving school like the man in the plan he told me to
Look me up when you get Class 4, I'll see what I can do for you
Cause I wanna be a beer truck driver
I wanna see that all the beer inside her
Safely makes it to its destination
I wanna be a beer truck drivin' sensation
Well when I die many years from now I want all the beer drinkers to somehow
Remember that frosty bottle or can that appeared there in their hand
Yeah I want everybody to raise their bottle of beer and say to me
To all the 18-wheeled chariots and all the beer drinking patriots
Because without them what we wouldn't even have a name and beer drinkin is our game
Beer truck driver, give em a hand and let me hear it again
Cause I wanna be a beer truck driver
I wanna see that all the beer inside her
Safely makes it to its destination
I wanna be a beer truck drivin sensation
Yeah I wanna be a beer truck driver
I wanna see that all the beer inside her
Safely makes it to its destination
I wanna be a beer truck drivin sensation
Well I wanna be a beer truck driver
I wanna be a beer truck driver
I wanna be a beer truck beer truck driver

Look What I Found In My Beer
Look what I found in my beer
A couple of dancing ladies and a ticket out of here
Look what I've found in my beer
A start to being lonely and an end to my career
Look what he found in his gin
Lights' looking lively when love's looking dim
Look what he found in his gin
Souls look heavy when personality's thin
Look what I found in the drum
A lifelong beat and a replacement to the rum
Look what he found in his guitar
Another fellow thinker and a chauffeur to my heart
Look what I found in the mic
An end to screwed-up drinking and a Paul I actually like
Look what I found in my beer
A free test drive for a heart I cannot steer
Look what I found in my beer
Look what I found in my drink
A brain without a plughole and a sink without a think
Look what I found in my drink
A "love you" to the barmaid and a too-familiar wink
Look what we found in his booze
The reflection of him and his children without shoes
Look what we found in his booze
This mornings jigsaw in a hill of last nights clues
Look what I found in the drum
A lifelong beat and a replacement to the rum
Look what he found in his guitar
Another fellow thinker and a chauffeur to my heart
Look what I found in the mic
An end to screwed-up drinking and a Paul I actually like
Look what I found in my beer
A free test drive for a heart I cannot steer
Look what I found in my beer
Look what we found in the dance
Look what I've found in the song
Low expectations in a large pile of cans
It maked the drink seem weak,
the friendship strong
BEER POETRY
Sonnet V: Drinking Beer
Drinking is logarithmic we decided
While finishing the upteenth beer last night.
It was just before we had recited
Monty Python and the Meaning of Life.
It seems that the first beer is always “taste”
And the second, so good, it comes so close,
That we drink the third beer with hurried haste
And the next three beers are a single dose.
Your head is now swimming, but you’re not drunk,
And getting the seventh beer from the fridge
You think, “Alfred E. Newman, what a hunk.”
With another beer you're burning the bridge
Between being cool and over the edge,
And you can’t balance beer while on that ledge.
Sandra Osborne
Ale
Now do I hear thee weep and groan,
Who hath a comrade sunk at sea?
Then quaff thee of my good old ale,
And it will raise him up for thee;
Thoul't think as little of him then
As when he moved with living men.
If thou hast hopes to move the world,
And every effort it doth fail,
Then to thy side call Jack and Jim,
And bid them drink with thee good ale;
So may the world, that would not hear,
Perish in hell with all your care.
One quart of good ale, and I
Feel then what life immortal is:
The brain is empty of all thought,
The heart is brimming o'er with bliss;
Time's first child, Life, doth live; but Death,
The second, hath not yet his breath.
Give me a quart of good old ale,
Am I a homeless man on earth?
Nay, I want not your roof and quilt,
I'll lie warm at the moon's cold hearth;
No grumbling ghost to grudge my bed,
His grave, ha! ha! holds up my head.
William Henry Davies
