September 2009

Hi All,
The September WSB meeting will be held at Curt&Diane's in the Illahee area of East Bremerton. Here's a note from Curt:

The date will be Saturday, September 26th, @ 5:00PM. The beer theme will be BRR (Browns, Reds, and Ryes), and yes, that can include sour browns. The grill will be on and we'll be making beer can chickens. The grill will also be available for anyone to cook whatever they wish. If people want to make a dish containing some sort of beer, all the better.

We will be holding a Michael Jackson trivia contest for anyone interested. This will include watching two episodes from The Beer Hunter series. There will be a prize for the winner. Additionally, I want to present a challenge to the members for a beer judge off to be held during the December meeting (albeit with the president's blessing, I cc'ed John). There will be a present for the winner of the beer judging. It will be limited to one style, with blind judging. Please give me some thoughts on how to make this work, can we do this, and what style should we do. Call me and we can talk sometime. P.S.: In your newsletter, please mention the Octoberfest in Enumclaw. Smiley emoticon

When you see Brad Ginn and Matt Riggs thank them for a smoothely run homebrew competition this year. Also, when you get a chance please thank our hosts at Hood Canal Brewery, Olympic Brewing Supplies, Silver City Brewery, The Toad House Pizza Pub, and Wyeast.

The winner of this year's Robert E. Allen Award for Excellence in Homebrewing is Sean Reichle, for his Spotted Horse Smokey Lager. I was privileged to taste it during a judging round and it was amazing. It was as smoky as the Aecht Schlenkerla beers from Bamburg, Germany, but had a more complex malt backbone. I wish we could buy it in the stores whenever we were in the mood (the same is true for many of the beers I judged). As a matter of fact, I gave Sean's rauchbier the highest score I've ever given for a beer in either a homebrew or commercial brew competition. He mentioned he might be able to dig up a couple bottles for this month's club meeting. He may even share a few of his secrets.

More detailed homebrew competition results:

I've been a bit slack on including notices of other homebrew competitions lately. Here's a rather exhaustive list of places you can send your brew for more accolades or analysis:

Brad has created a Facebook page for us. Check it out, sign up, and think of the possibilities:

Brad has loaded photos from the homebrew competition here and plans to add them to the club website soon.

FRESH HOPS AVAILABILITY
I just returned from Montana yesterday and entering Yakima and Moxie via Hwy 24 I saw them harvesting miles and miles of hops. There were trucks piled high with bines all over the place and the spillover on the roads released great aroma as other vehicles crushed them as they drove by. It's a great time of year to visit the Yakima area. In Wetter Washington our hops have been arriving in profuse abundance this year too. So far John Altman and Don Wyatt have mentioned that they have plenty of fresh hops to get rid of. Let me know if you want help with your hops and I'll add you to the reminder mailing later this week.

Jeff Hummel brought some of his hop harvest to our awards ceremony both last year and this year. He has oasted them perfectly and they smell and taste great. Jeff might show up at Saturday's meeting with some hops for sale, if he still has some by then. He just forwarded his craigslist hops ad info to us:

ORGANIC CASCADE HOPS FOR HOMEBREWERS!

I have lots of organically grown Cascade Hops I have grown from 7 year old vines on Bainbridge Island. They were hand picked over the last couple weeks to get them as they ripen, then dried in my oast (hop kiln), vacuum packed and frozen.

They have a fairly high AA for a Cascade….somewhere in the range of an 8–9 AA so excellent for bittering, but with a very nice smell for aroma hops. I think you'll find the quality is very good. If you've ever chewed a fresh green hop, you'll recognize the taste it imparts to the beer.

I have 2 oz. for $5; 4 oz. for $10; and 8 oz. for $20. These will keep at least a year and when thawed out, should look, smell and feel as fresh as the day they were packed. I've had excellent feedback from last year's buyers so you won't be disappointed! These are superb!

I'll leave it to you to add your own review of them. Feel free to make use of the above in any way you want.

Thanks,

Jeff

CB's Nuts Notes
CB's has long been associated with Hood Canal Brewery. It's named after Clark Bowen. His wife Tami was one of the first servers at Hood Canal. Doubtless you've tried their peanuts at the brewery. If not, their retail shop is across the street and about a block further towards Kingston, just past the stoplight. They've recently been adding loads of new product lines and they've been finding new outlets (QFC amongst them). My favorite recent innovation is their Robust Roast Lightly Salted Jumbos. Here are a few more of their new tasty treats; Lightly Salted Organic Cashews, Organic Cashew Butter, Lightly Salted Almonds. They have a newsletter, which might include coupons, so sign up soon.

Here's an interesting link I found on the Oregon Brew Crew mailing list. It points to their local library's list of brew books. The club and its members have contributed many, probably most, of these books to the collection:

I haven't been adding much info from the Elliott Bay Brewery newsletters because they throw in so much great stuff. I thought I'd send out just a taste this time around to tease you to get in to visit them, and maybe Beveridge Place while you're in West Seattle:

Pouring SEPTEMBER 1 in:

- West Seattle = Brandy Barrel Imperial Brown Ale from Heaven Hill brandy barrel.
- Burien = Syrah Pro-Am Barleywine from Delille Cellars

Here's another teaser to tempt you to the crowded side of the water. It was sent to us on Sept. 10 but it gives you an idea about the level of beer geekiness of this place. Get on Uber's mailing list for a heads up about such things.
--
Come on in and try a few extra special beers we just tapped.

We're having an "Eisbock-Off" between two masterpiece heavyweights.

Here is the tale of the tape:

SCHNEIDER AVENTINUS EISBOCK (LATE 2007)

- 12%
- Wheat based ale
- 2 yr Vintage

KULMBACHER EISBOCK 2009

- 9.2%
- Barley based lager
- New Batch

We highly recommend trying these side-by-side for a very cool beer sensory experience. Although the same style, they are incredibly different.

Eisbock is a German brewing style. It is typically an already-strong lager beer which has been temporarily frozen. When such liquids are frozen they tend to naturally dehydrate, leaving less water content once thawed. All the original alcohol is still there though, so the resulting alcohol concentration (same alcohol in less liquid) makes it a stronger beer overall. In the case of Aventinus Eisbock, the base beer, which is regular Aventinus Wheat Doppelbock, starts at 8.2% alcohol by volume. Miraculously it grows all the way to 12% by virtue of the Eisbock process. Cool process, great beer. "Bartender, I'll take less water please."

TWO OTHER BEERS OF NOTE:

AVERY SAMAELS OAK-AGED ALE

We just tapped a keg! This is a MONSTER 14.5% oak-aged English style strong ale. Tons of caramel, vanilla, and whoop ass. It is offered in 4oz servings. You'll thank us later. Trust us. This beer is truly amazing and you really should come try some right out of a fresh keg.

SPATEN OKTOBERFEST (UR-MARZEN)

'Tis the season, and we've got the definitive Munich party beer on tap!
5.9% delicious Vienna-style amber lager is just what Oktoberfest season is all about.
No time to sit down for a liter? Grab some to go...at a smokin' price.
We are selling BOTH the Oktoberfest AND the Spaten Premium Lager in 6-packs to go for just $8 (no tax)!

Stock up & drink up!

See you under the bar,

Your friends at Über Tavern

Craig Hartinger of Merchand du Vin sent us this info. I heard from Bottleworks lately that this brew should arrive sometime this fall or winter.
Announcing: Ayinger Weizen-Bock!

Seattle, August 11, 2009

One of the world's most respected breweries has some exciting news: the
US introduction of Ayinger Weizen-Bock.

Ayinger Weizen-Bock, a strong wheat ale, is pale - "helles" - and brewed
from a grist of 60% wheat malt and 40% barley malt. Produced via a
decoction mash, it has the astonishing finesse, aroma, and flavor of
Ayinger's famed wheat beers but with the flavors turned up to balance
the greater strength. It offers the classic Bavarian weizen beer aroma,
suggesting spice and cloves; a smooth body that drinks fairly full; and
flavor that is the essence of the wheat harvest, fresh-baked bread, some
of the richness of great home-made vegetable soup, and somehow maybe
even the afternoon sunshine of a fall day. It's bottle-conditioned, of
course, and presents a beautiful rocky head upon pouring.

Ayinger Weizen-Bock is a winter seasonal only - look for it at great
beer spots starting sometime near the end of September. We recommend
you grab some when you see it: this is a rare style, truly a world class
beer - as such, production is very limited.

ABV: 7.1% OG: 1.067 IBU: 10; packaged in traditional, slender
half-liter bottles, 20 per case.

Merchant du Vin imports a full range of Bavarian specialty beers from
Ayinger Brewery: Celebrator Doppelbock, Brau-Weisse, Ur-Weisse,
Altbairisch Dunkel, Jahrhundertbier and Ayinger Oktober Fest-Marzen.

BEER TUNE LYRICS
I just googled "lyrics beer" and got a few new songs (beware, I haven't checked the lyrics much on these yet):

Psychostick
Beer!

I like beer 'cos it is good
I drink beer because I should
If there was a song to sing
I sing it and beer you bring
I drink beer when I am sad
''cause the beer it makes me glad
Now there's nothing left to say
So lets go drink beer

Beer is good
Beer is good
Beer is good
... and Stuff

Beer is good
Beer is good
Beer is good
Let's go drink some BEER

BEER

When it's warm it taste's real crappy
But cold beer will make me happy
When I throw up on the floor
I can go and drink some more
They say beer will make me dumb
It are go good with pizza
Now that we have drunk some beer
Let's go drive a car

Beer is good
Beer is good
Beer is good
....and stuff

Beer is good
Beer is good
Beer is good
Let's go drink some BEER

Beer

Ooooooooooo

Uh dude.. I think you've had enough
...No

Lets go drink some beer.

I am drunk, drunk is me, I am drunk, wheee
I am drunk, drunk is me, I am drunk wheee
I am drunk, drunk is me, I am...

Kimya Dawson was heavily featured in the soundtrack for "Juno" and her style has been copied in many TV ads since then.

Beer
Artist(Band):Kimya Dawson

the beer i had for breakfast was a bottle of mad dog
and my 20/20 vision was fifty percent off
you said punch-buggy red and punched me right in my left eye
i said don't you mean pediddle? and i lit his house on fire
he came home on acid i was holding his shotgun
i was dressed like tina turner in beyond thunder dome
he said don't shoot, i said i won't i love you you're my friend
i handed him my wig and shot myself in the head
then i stuffed a box of tissues in the hole in my skull
i got in my mazda and i drove to the mall
i got a big johnson shirt and some silicone tits
when i pulled out the tissues they were covered with shit
and the beer i had for breakfast was a box of cheap white wine
and the boom box on my shoulder was a box of clementines
i ate every single one without noticing the mold
you said you're gross my darling, i said no i'm rock and roll
even though i'd never ever been in a band
i got cool as black ice tattooed on my hand
and the christians gave me comic books as if i would be scared
of burning in hell well i was already there
and the beer i had for breakfast silver bullet in the brain
and the beer i had for lunch was a bottle of night train
and the beer i had for dinner was my crazy neighbor's pills
we had to sit down on skateboards jut to make it down the hill
then i peed my pants and you stole the groom's cigar
and some old man made me watch him masturbate locked in his car
when i got back to the apartment you were face down on the floor
you said don't go to bed yet let's go get a 64
and the beer i had had for breakfast was a pint of jim beam
and a fifth of peach schnapps and some warm sunny d
and you said bottoms up just as i bottomed out
i tried to scream fuck you but blood was pouring out my mouth
evan dando never planned on telling you the truth
and your leonardo i.d. card is your fountain of youth
you can be a teenager for your whole fucking life
just find some pretty sucker and make that bitch your wife
i guess by now you all know my friends danny broke his neck
he was driving home from sirens when he got into a wreck
first i cried for him and then i cried for me
haunted by the ghost of the girl i used to be
but the rocks with holes are warm in my hands
and i buried my toes in the hot hot sand
and the silver pink pony kisses me and says
you've come a long, long way and you deserve to be really happy

Basshunter
Beer in a Bar
I'm still smiling like a beer in a bar

I'm staring in the mirror while I'm doing my hair
I'm putting on my clothes as I go down the stairs
I open up my mini bar and make myself a drink
I'm not an alcoholic but I know what you think
My mood is getting higher when its knocking on my door
And its my party homeboys and a girl I want to score
But I don't have the time to take her for a ride
Were going to a crazy college party tonight

What if people just gave a damn about if I
made this music with a computer program
I can't play the drums or guitar
But I'm still smiling like a beer in a bar
I know that this is a weird song
But who can tell somebody if its right or wrong
I just want to show what I can do
So sit right back while I'm talking to you

(to all the online party people too)

Arriving to the party
Every one is there
Were going to have it awesome
I can feel it in the air
I go out to the backyard and what do I see?
All the girls are shaking with their ass in front of me
(well this is not my cup of tea if you know what I mean)

What if people just gave a damn about if
I made this music with a computer program
I can't play the drums or guitar
But I'm still smiling like a beer in a bar
I know that this is a weird song
But who can tell somebody if its right or wrong
I just want to show what I can do
So sit right back while I'm talking to you

(all right mates are you ready to party)

Atrophy
Beer Bong
[Music: Chris Lykins]
[Lyrics: David Lehman]

Beer bong - suck it down
Beer bong - don't do it wrong
Beer bong - don't take too long
or else you'll drown
Beer bong - gulp it down
Beer bong - if you can
Beer bong - make it vanish
if you're a man
[Chorus:]
Heidelberg
Dutch Treat
Black Label
Beer bong - it's very clear
Beer bong - you must be daring
Beer bong - or else the beer
you'll be wearing
Beer bong - and tomorrow
Beer bong - when I wake
Beer bong - to my sorrow
my head will ache
[Chorus:]
Meister Brau
Blatz
Grain Belt
[Solo: Rick]
[Chorus:]
Old Milwaukee
Pearl
