January 2008
WSB January mtg, Sun, Jan. 20, 1PM+
Our annual barley wine meeting will once again be hosted by Mary Earl on Sunday, January 20, in the middle of MLK weekend. She mentioned a start time of 1PM. Bring a potluck dish to help buffer the potential ethanol overdose from the barley wines. Bring or arrange a designated driver, the Kitsap Mall and Silverdale's commercialism overdose isn't far away. Contact Mary for reservations for a sleeping bag spot on her floor.
Bring your homebrewed or commercial examples of barley wine or its equivalents. But feel free to bring samples of other homebrews as well. Please no non-BW commercial brews for this meeting as we always have too much to finish.
ROAD ALERTS
First, if snow and ice is extreme we may have to cancel the meeting so check your emails by that Saturday evening or early Sunday. Though the roads around Mary's are reasonably flat it often seems to be colder and snowier there than much of the county.
Second, Mt. View Road was cut by the flooding of Clear Creek in early December. You must now approach Mary's from the west side via Clear Creek Road. Road workers indicated to her that people may not be able to walk across the gap on Mt. View from the Silverdale/Viking Way side, so don't plan on it.
Contact Us for directions to Mary's.
Our February meeting is set for Jack's place. Alan might host March as our annual imperial stout tasting. Stay tuned for dates, times, and directions.
At the December meeting Brad Ginn was voted our new Prez, John Altman our new Veep, and Matt Riggs our new treasurer. Feel free to contact them with any ideas/suggestions/complaints you have for the club.
Brad mentioned he wants to reinvigorate the glassware buy discussions. Anybody up for a no hop brew competition? Any ideas for tours?
From the Hop Caen column in the Dec/Jan '07/'08 Celebrator:
"Michael Jackson: A Sign of the Times: The late beer authority MIchael Jackson, no stranger to autograph seekers, was once asked about the strangest thing he had ever been asked to sign. "Well, last night two women asked me to sign their beavers," Jackson said with a mischievous grin. He paused for effect. "They both had those ... I think you call them Beanie Babies." Nice, Michael ..."

ed. note: Some of the recordings reflect regional variants so you may not be pronouncing your favorite beers wrong even if your pronunciation doesn't agree with these recordings. Keep in mind whether your favorite brewery is from Flanders or Wallonia before choosing which recording to begin with. The tricky ones are Flemish beers with French names and vice versa.

Toronado Barley Wine Festival, San Fran
Saturday, February 16th through the end of the week and then some.
This is the mother of all barley wine festivals. If you haven't made it before, try to make it sometime. And get there before opening time on that first Saturday if you hope to find a seat, or even elbow room. Last year there were maybe 2-3 overlap beers between this fest and the Beveridge Place BW Bacchanalia and the Brouwer's Hard Liver. Judging takes place on that first day and by the end of the day the winning BWs will be sold out. But don't worry, as the week goes on blown BW kegs are replaced by other amazing beers, often including lambics or imperial stouts. Also, some years owner David Keene has a rare vintage bottled beer list which has featured barley wines as far back as the '80s.

Man eats underwear to beat breathalyzer
The Advocate
By D'Arcy Rickard
STETTLER -- An 18-year old Stettler man tried to eat his
underwear in the hope that the cotton fabric would absorb
alcohol before he took a breathalyzer test, provincial court
heard this week.
David Zurfluh was subsequently acquitted of a charge of
impaired driving because he blew .08, the legal limit.
But the testimony broke up people in Judge David
MacNaughton's provincial court here Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Zurfluh was collared by RCMP Const. Bill Robinson
after he ran from his vehicle, which had been seen weaving
down the highway.
While sitting in the back of the patrol car, Mr. Zurfluh
tried to eat his shorts, Const. Robinson told the court.
Mr. Zurfluh said he ripped the crotch out of his shorts,
stuffed the fabric in his mouth and then spit it out.
A class of law students from William E. Hay Composite
High, in court as observers, was removed by the teacher when
testimony enlivened the proceedings. The Grade 11 and 12
students had difficulty maintaining composure.
"People were leaving the courtroom with tears in their
eyes, trying not to laugh," said RCMP Const. Peter
McFarlane.
Beer jokes, quotes, poems---
A drunk is driving through the city and his car is weaving all over the road. Eventually a cop pulls him over.

Bubba's Lawsuit
Down in the bayou, Bubba called an attorney and asked, "Is it true they're suin' the cigarette companies for causing people to get cancer?
"Yes, Bubba, sure is true." responded the lawyer.
"And now someone's suin' them fast food restaurants for making 'em fat and cloggin' their hearts with all them burgers and fries, is that true mister lawyer?"
"Sure is Bubba. But why you asking?"

Jokes and Fun
"A collection of great beer jokes and fun games for light entertainment."
Beer tune lyrics:
Artist: Warren Brothers
Song: Sell a Lot of Beer
Album: Well Deserved Obscurity
My name ain't up in lights,
But I'm a hero in this bar.
An' I play four big shows a night,
With just me and my guitar.
I don't make a lot of money,
An' I don't have a lot of gear.
I don't sell a lot of records,
But I sure sell a lot of beer.
Whoa, c'mon now, sing it up.
If you wanna hear Bob Dylan,
Then I'll play "Like A Rollin' Stone."
If you wanna hear Bob Wills,
I'll sing "The Rose Of San Antone."
I'll even play "Happy Birthday",
If that's what you wanna hear.
'Cause I don't sell a lot of records,
But I sure sell a lot of beer.
So it's hey, hey, what's your favorite song?
An' hey, hey, everybody sing along.
We're just one big redneck family,
Aw, at least while we're in here.
'Cause I don't sell a lot of records
But I sure sell a lot of beer.
Aw, sell us some beer now.
I wake up every Sunday mornin',
So I can go to church and pray.
But after some of my Saturday nights,
Things just don't turn out that way.
I think even the Good Lord, he understands,
That I'm at that point in my career.
They I don't sell a lot of records, (No I don't, tell 'em.)
But they sure sell a lot of beer.
Hey, hey, what's your favorite song?
Hey, hey, everybody sing along.
We're just one big redneck family,
Aw, at least while we're in here.
'Cause I don't sell a lot of records
But I sure sell a lot of beer.
I don't sell a lot of records
But I sure sell a lot of beer.
Yeah, I do.
Group: Katatonia
Song: Omerta
Come by you have come far
All I had I lost in the flood
Come sit with me at the bar
Tell me of progress strengthen my blood
No one here knows my name
I have traded my memories for things
But I remember you clearly
Do you remember that I used to sing
Why have you waited so long
Come by you have come far
Long since I saw you so how have you been
Come sit with me at the bar
How long since they told you that they had found him
No one here knows my name
I gave up my worries for one good thing
But I remember you clearly
Do you remember that I used to sing
Was it because I never told you
I was going away
That you waited so long
Was it because your fucking dreams
Meant nothing to me
That you waited so long
It runs from the top of my fingers
Into my hands
What is it I have been drinking
I do not understand
I thought I'd lost you my brother
I'm so glad you came
My regards to the ones that I love I miss them
Tell them I love them I miss them
Beck - Beercan
Alcohol on my hands
I got plans
to ditch myself and get outside
dancing woman
throwing plates
decapitating their laughing dates
swirling chickens caught in flight
out of focus
much too bright
coming down
shiny teeth
game show suckers trying to bleed
but I got a drug and I got the bug
and I got something better than love
How you like me now
pretty good
going on
feeling strong
I quit my job blowing leaves
telephone bills up my sleeves
choking like a one man dustball
freedom rock slimeball
talking in code, i went down
lit up the shack
grab me a beer out of the sack
everybodys been over twice
painting the walls throwing some dice
leaping up into the air getting juiced up beyond belief
and they were singing like this
why go throwing Frisbees at the sun
put my soul between the bun
now I wandering now I'm drunk
now I'm running like a flaming pig
oh yeah
scraping off the attitude
old man eating all my food
don't be kind
don't be rude
just shake your boots and let it all get loose
oh yeah
my goodness
fluffy clouds
jumping rainbows
fluffy clouds
I'm sad
jumping rainbows
A soft and snuggly place
[repeat]
[chorus]
oh that's cold
somebody put a flame-thrower on me
oh yeah
I like it like that
somebody bring me a plate of sassafrass
Sublime - 40 Oz To Freedom
You've got your hair permed
You've got your red dress on
Talkin' bout how second gear was such a turn on
And the fog forming on my window tells me that the morning here
And you'll be gone before too long
Who taught you those new tricks?
Damn I should'nt start that talk,
but life is one big question when your starin at the clock
And the answers always waiting at the liqour store, 40 oz to Freedom,
so I'll take that walk.
And I know that ohhhh...I'm not comin back
Ohh not going back
God knows not going back
You look so fine when you lie it just don't show,
That I know which way the wind blows
40 oz to freedom is the only chance I have to feel good,
even though I feel bad
And I know that ohhhh...I'm not comin back
Ohh not going back
God knows I'm not going back.(2x)
