November 2007

Hi All,
The November WSB meeting will be held in Poulsbo at Brad and Dina Ginn's home on Thursday, November 15, 6:30+. They live just east of downtown Poulsbo past the high school.

Contact Us for directions.

Anybody want to host the December meeting? We'll hold our elections then.

We’re always looking for hosts for future meetings. Please let Alan Moum or Brad Ginn know if you’re interested in hosting a meeting this year.

Hood Canal's Doppelbock will be released this Wednesday, Nov. 7. Don't miss this dark rich malty brew.
Homebrewing/Beer report from Dan Parilla out in Hawaii

Well, this was supposed to be an article about my recent beer travels, but as that endeavor continues to grow and morph, I will delay its release until the new year. Instead I have happened on what, come November 10th, will be a dark day in Homebrewing in Hawaii. Our one and only homebrew store, Hawaii Style Homebrew is closing its doors after 7 years in business (lost the lease and the owner is calling it quits.) I am going to buy up what stock they have (no out of business sale has been announced as they are still hoping for a buyer.) But I intend to take any yeast, hops or adjunct packet that I can from any and all of their shelves along with any grain they have, although they are already out of 2 and 6 row as well as light liquid extract. By Friday they expect to be down to wheat malt only.

Aloha,
Dan

I went to sleep early, but I woke in a cold sweat at the thought of a kegerator run dry, and 20 junior officers standing in my driveway for what has become a weekly dolling out of the homebrew. Like Oliver's bane in the form of an orphanage ogre, I had to inform the throng...that there was no more! The joyful 5th Green had run dry. The looks of shock and despair chilled me. Yes, for the first time, the balmy tradewinds of Oahu sent a shiver down my spine. With a brace from the magic elixir still trickling from the mouth of a final bottle of delectable barely so graced to become ale, I set off to quench the thirsty. First the local liquor mart, then Costco, to Tamura's and the Liquor Collection. But, as I rounded every bend, the cackle of the distributor could be heard enticing one and all to slake their thirst with the King of Beers. Round the Island I tore. From Kamehameha Highway, thence the Pali, and once more round the Farrington, not forsaking even the macadam jungle of all three of Hawaii's interstates, I found myself under the painful gaze of the MEGABREWS.

I was soon extricating myself from under a dusty bin of empty bottles in the back of Tamura's cooler, when I spied a lone six pack of cans...yes cans in a pale tan can with a simple black band on top and bottom. T'was it not the grail that hid amongst the cups of common men? It was the lone six pack from the gods on Maui who call themselves brewers. And a sampler pack at that. At once, time and space converged to plant me again in my chair, gazing across the 5th green behind my fence out toward the Koolau Range with a Bikini Blond, a Coconut Porter, and a Big Swell IPA to relieve, for the moment at least, the fire that was sure to grow.

A mere 2 hours later I woke to greet the day and realized I had but one, well maybe two stops required of me before this darkest day could happen. I would once more venture through Kahikili and down the Nimitz highway to our singular homebrew haven to collect what I could and hopefully prepare for what could very well be the driest desert I will have to cross. Wish me luck dear friends, and raise a glass to those fine merchants who have served us well, may they find it in the hearts (or pocketbooks) to revitalize our island with grains and more that our tankards will not run dry.

Note from Bob Allen's brother's brewery in McMinnville, OR

Beer Available
Those of you in the McMinnville area probably know that we sold out of beer at the last Farmers’ Market. I’m happy to report that we’re almost back in beer! We will be open next Thursday and Friday, November 1st and 2nd from Noon to 4:00 for the mailing list only. We will have samples and bottles of our Pale Lager and our new Amber Lager. The Amber Lager is similar to our seasonal (and sold-out) Bobtoberfest – smooth, rich and malty with little hop interference; it is the antithesis of most Northwest beers. Tasting is free to the mailing list. I believe I have plenty of beer for the time being (of course I thought that before…), but if you’d would like to reserve some for pick up in the next week or two, call or email me.

Winter Hours
Beginning November 8th, we will be open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays from 1:00 to 5:30. We will be pouring samples of what we have available for $1 per taste and will have bottles for sale as well.

Wine Tasting Weekends
We can’t let all the wine weekend traffic pass by without trying to sell them beer! Please make a note that we will be open November 17th and 18th and November 23rd and 24th from 1:00 to 5:00. If you’re out this way, please stop by. We hope to pour up to five different beers, the Pale and Amber Lagers, the Coastal Common, the Schwarz, and Sandy Paws, and there will be a tasting fee that will depend on the number of beers we have available. If we run out of beer, we will close early! You will all get an email notice if we do change the schedule.

What Is Sandy Paws?
Sandy Paws is our Christmas Dopplebock – big, smooth, super-malty, and complex. This beer uses 30% more grain per batch than our standard beers and only makes a 15 gallon batch (instead of the usual 20). This is our answer to the barley wines that other brewers produce. Sandy Paws is comprised of four batches brewed in April, June (2), and August that have been blended together. This beer is more of a sipper, so it’s packaged in 12 ounce bottles, and our answer to the magnum – a 1 liter growler-style bottle. The 12 ounce bottles sell for $3 each or 4 for $10. The one liter bottles sell for $11. Mailing list customers can order now for pick up the weekend of November 17th and 18th. Just send me an email at beer@heaterallen.com or give me a call at (503) 472-4898.

What’s Currently Brewing
This week marks the end of brewing for beers that will be ready before Christmas, so next week I’ll start brewing our Bock beer – Hugo. Bock beers are similar to Dopplebocks in malt profile, but are a little lower in alcohol and not quite a sweet on the palate. This is the beer that made Munich famous as a brewing center. Hugo is named for my wife’s grandfather, Hugo Effenberger, an early Oregon pioneer. Hugo’s family helped found the town of Nehalem in the late 1800s. We already have significant interest in the beer so we will arty to brew more of it. The release date will be some time in late February or early March. We’ll let you know as we get closer to the date.

Thanks again for all your support!

Beer tune lyrics-

Artist/Band: Lawrence Tracy
Lyrics for Song: If I Don't Make It Back
Lyrics for Album: New Songs

We went out for beers and a couple of laughs
Knowin' full well that every bad joke that Jimmy told
Might be his last
So we laughed like the world wasn't at war
Said things to him we'd never said before
And he teared up as he held up his glass
He said, boys, if I don't make it back

Have a beer for me, don't waste no tears on me
On Friday night sit on the visitors side
And cheer for the home team
Drive my Camaro, 90 miles an hour down Red Rock Rock
With 'Born to Run' blastin' on the radio
And find someone good enough for Amy
Who will love her like I would have
If I don't make it back

We said, hey, man that ain't gonna happen
Don't even think like that
If we know you, you'll pull through without a scratch
He pulled me aside in the parkin' lot
Said, Amy and me we're gonna tie the knot
You're my best man, just wanted you to know that
Just in case I don't make it back

Have a beer for me, don't waste no tears on me
On Friday night sit on the visitors side
And cheer for the home team
Drive my Camaro, 90 miles an hour down Red Rock Rock
With 'Born to Run' blastin' on the radio
And find someone good enough for Amy
Who will love her like I would have
If I don't make it back

If the good Lord calls me home
I'd like to think my friends
Will think about me when I'm gone

Well, Miller Lite ain't my brand
But I drink one every now and then, in his honour
And we ain't missed a home game yet
Had that Camero at 110 on Red Rock Road
When the speakers blowed
And I introduced Amy to a friend of mine from Monroe
He's a good ol' boy
But you know, she just ain't ready

Tim McGraw
"My Next 30 Years"

I think Ill take a moment, celebrate my age
The ending of an era and the turning of a page
Now its time to focus in on where I go from here
Lord have mercy on my next thirty years

Hey my next thirty years Im gonna have some fun
Try to forget about all the crazy things Ive done
Maybe now Ive conquered all my adolescent fears
And Ill do it better in my next thirty years

My next thirty years Im gonna settle all the scores
Cry a little less, laugh a little more
Find a world of happiness without the hate and fear
Figure out just what Im doing here
In my next thirty years

Oh my next thirty years, Im gonna watch my weight
Eat a few more salads and not stay up so late
Drink a little lemonade and not so many beers
Maybe Ill remember my next thirty years

My next thirty years will be the best years of my life
Raise a little family and hang out with my wife
Spend precious moments with the ones that I hold dear
Make up for lost time here, in my next thirty years
In my next thirty years

Artist: Cagle Chris
Song: When I Get There
Album: Anywhere But Here

Well you can have the truck and the stuff
Baby, you can have the house
Yeah, you and your lawyer and your new boyfriend
Can all sort it out
What’s left of my pride and these two wheels are all I need
To take me away from somewhere I don’t wanna be
Baby I’m gone
When you read these words, I’ll be a blue of chrome
I wanna ride, watch the heat waves rise
I wanna feel the sun on my face and the wind in my hair
I’ll know where I’m goin’
When I get there
From what I hear, the beer is cheap down in Mexico
I wouldn’t mind bein’ where they speak a language I don’ know
The altitude of the Rockies might be what I need
If anybody eve asks about what happened to me
Tell ‘em I’m gone
When you read these words, I’ll be a blur of chrome
I wanna ride, watch the heat waves rise
I need to feel the sun n my face and the wind in my hair
I’ll know where I’m goin’
When I get there
And if I miss a turn, it won’t make a bit of difference
Baby, where we’re concerned, all I need is distance
Baby, I’m gone
I need to feel the sun on my face and the wind in my hair
I’ll know where I’m goin’
When I get there
Baby I’m gone
Ooh, gone
Oh, I’m going, yeah
I’m taking my heart and I’m hittin’ the road of these two wheels
Baby, I’m gone
Gone, gone, gone
Baby, I’m gone, gone, gone, yeah

Gretchen Wilson
"You Don't Have To Go Home"

Well, they're flickin' on the bar lights
Bands playin one last song
And if you want another round better order it now
It's last call
Crowds still rockin and its 2:01
The bartenders screamin at the top of his lungs

Chorus
You don't have to go home
But you can't stay here
You can walk, you can crawl
Get carried off by the law
But you will get the hell out of here
You don't have to go home
You don't have to go home
But you can't stay here
Gretchen Wilson
You Dont have to go home

Well, there's a couple hidin' out
Gettin down in a bathroom stall
And there's a 20 dollar bet just waitin on the
Eight ball to fall
Everybody's beggin' for one last shot
Before they kick our butts into the parking lot

Chorus
You don't have to go home
But you can't stay here
You can walk, you can crawl
Get carried off by the law
But you will get the hell out of here

You don't have to go home
You don't have to go home
You don't have to go home
You don't have to go home
But you can't stay here
You can walk, you can crawl
Get carried off by the law
But you will get the hell out of here

You don't have to go home
You don't have to go home
You don't have to go home
But you can't stay here
